In “Loyalty toward online games, gaming addiction, and purchase intention towards online mobile in-game features,” by Janarthanan Balakrishnan, the author describes the relationship between being addicted to gaming and the intention to purchase in-game items. On page 2, the author claims in-game purchase is dependent how engaged the player is with the game. According to Drell,” In-game purchases require a long-term momentum within the game to motivate players to engage in such action, the more engagement and ‘stickiness’ toward the game the more it will enlarge the possibility of purchase action” (pg. 3), what the person is saying is that a game that is unique with long lasting features would motivate a player to spend money. By making the game harder, some players might be forced to spend money as well. On pg. 4, the author claims that there is a relationship between addiction and loyalty toward gaming. There are many players that are dissatisfied with the games but remains loyal to the game, believing that it will become better and they would spend money to support the game.

What I found the most useful about this article is the statistics that were gathered from many sources. There are charts showing the progress from a person being addicted to gaming and eventually began to spend money. There is also a graph with the results of a questionnaire that shows how long many people spent on gaming daily and purchase in-game. This article was mainly statistics and information of research about the relationship between loyalty toward gaming and the chance of purchasing in-game items so it might not be a very useful article. This article does not mention being addicted affects a person in ways such as health or personality. I think the article could be improved by adding a research on gaming could affect a person’s behavior.

In “Video Game Addiction: Signs, Problems, Risks,& Treatment,” Brent Conrad discusses about people who were loss of control over gaming. One key point that Conrad mentions from the article is what is video game addiction. On page 1, Conrad claims “Instead of devoting energy to “real-world” activities and pursuits, a video game addict spends most of his or her time playing games.” He describes people that were addicted to the video game will spend most of their time on it. Another key point Conrad mentions is video game addiction’s symptoms. On page 3, Conrad claims “significant negative impact on work performance. School achievement, and/ or interpersonal relationships

after staying up very late to play video games which regularly leads to feeling very fatigued the day.” He describes while you were addicted to the video game, you will spend six to eight playing games non stop, it causes you to have low interest in social activities, having a bad performance on your job and school. One more key point Conrad mentions is what problems are caused by video game addiction. On page 4-5, Conrad claims Emotional problems, Financial problems, Health problems, Social problems, and Family problems. He describes video game addiction could make you had different kind of problems. You may have anger issues, spending large sums of money, having poor sleep habits, poor social, and developing a bad family relation. One significance from the article is on page 7, Conrad claims “there are relatively few treatment options available for those who recognize the need to change their excessive gaming habits.” This line talks about there are solutions for the people that are addicted to the video game.

The most interesting part of the article “Video Game Addiction: Signs, Problems, Risks,& Treatment.” there are treatments for video game addiction. I thought when you were addicted to games you can’t really quit, but the article mentions few treatments for those people . the place I need to learn more about is how did they found out they were addicted to games. This article mentions most of my research topic. One thing that I think could be improved in this article is the author could provide the number of people that are addicted to video game form different area

  3. Part A)
In the article “Evaluation of Internet Addiction and Depression Among University Students,” by Ozgul Orsal et al., the writers discuss how the excessive use of the internet has led to many mental health conditions in young people. According to the article, the term ‘internet addiction’ can be defined as excessive use of the internet, when disconnected, excessive users become irritable and overly aggressive, and finally they begin to deteriorate their social and family lives. On page 446, the author states that internet addiction has been associated with conditions such as; shyness, anxiety, introversion, and personality disorders. This statement made by the authors is proof that overuse of the internet will likely lead to developing a mental health condition.
Furthermore, Ozgul Orsal et al. claim in the article that “Low self esteem, low motivation, fear of rejection and the need for confirmation from all others
may result in the frequent use of the internet
”  This claim made by the authors describes that because the internet has so many outlets, a person with low self esteem or motivation (someone who lacks confidence or have low desire to do things), may use it to help themselves feel better, which would lead to them becoming addicted. On page 449 of the article, a study was conducted in a university to determine how students use the the internet. Out of the 3,442 students who agreed to do the study, 36.2% began using the internet by the age 10-12, 44% used it for lessons and 31.4% had a suspected diagnosis of depression.
    Part B)

What I found the most interesting in the article was how they chose to define internet addiction because they article suggested that it is something that you need to be medicated for. One thing I believe I should do more research on is whether the studies would change drastically if it was a city college and not a university. The things that can be improved in this article is doing another study that would mention if the students had mental health conditions besides depression because of internet use.

  4. A) In the article, “Relationship of Internet Addiction with Self-Esteem and Depression University Students,” by SA. BAHRAINIAN et.al, it’s about in today’s world, the only thing that is keeping us up to date is technology. Not only technology, but the Internet is what evolving people lives. The Internet is effecting teenagers the most because of their self-esteem.

First part of the article these authors wants to make is Internet addiction lowers your self-esteem and behavioral. For example, on page 3, the author claims, “The relationship between Internet Addiction and Self-Esteem has been investigated in several studies. Young(1998) reported that the vast majority of Internet addicts have a history of depression and anxiety.” In the middle of the article, another key point they announce were test yourself if your really addicted to the Internet. For example, on page 3, the author claims, “IAT is the most famous measurement in the Internet Addiction field and has been used by many researchers. This instrument has exhibited good psychometric properties  in previous studies.” One last key point the author claims is on page 4, “The Beck Depression Inventory was used to asses depression in the study group.” Overall, the point of view these authors are saying is Internet Addiction will destroy your self-esteem and confidence. “These studies shown that adolescents with low self-esteem tend to spend more time on social networking sites than those with higher self-esteem.” In other words, they could effect their grades and have a risk of sucidial than those with high confidence and able to succeed further.

    B) In the article, the most interesting part is realizing using the Internet overtime can effect your behavior, confidence, and ability to maintain your work. I find myself confused by people can become depressed because of other people’s opinions online. In the article, I need to learn more about how Internet can be so effective to people. The parts of my research topic that this article fail to mention was depression because it wasn’t announce often. Other things that need to improve in this article is evidence to show their claim.

  5. In the article “Child Video Game Addition- Fact & Solution,” by Dr.Brent Conrad, the author discuss the main idea of how addict to video games affect the life of teenagers. On page 3, author claims the reason of why video games are so addictive to teenagers. In article he states “there is likely a video game that allows him or her to easily escape into this virtual world,” which means that children are trying to escape the real world for some reasons, and these reasons won’t happen in the virtual world. Furthermore, author also points out some real cases on page 5 to support his point of the psychological and social problems of children who have video game addiction. For instance, kill other people, failing on school, social isolation, and etc. On the page 6 and 7, Dr.Brent provides the warning signs of children when they are addicts to video game. In this part, he employees many examples. For example, lying about the time spent on playing computer or video game, neglect or loss of interest in other activities, continuing to play despite serious real world consequences and etc. In the end of article, Dr.Brent said “In these situations, parents may cover for a child when he misses school due to gaming. Complete homework for him to avoid bad grades….” This seems to me that those parents are doing the job which teenagers should do by themselves, and helping them have more time to gaming. That doesn’t help their children at all, it only can make them more addict to game and become worse.

According to the article, the most helpful things I found is author gives a lot of examples of how gaming addition affect children, and he also using the real case and research result to support it. After reading the article, I find out myself is getting confuse by the parents who help their children gaming by cover their mistake, help them do their homework, and etc. I don’t understand what is in their mind, maybe I should learn more about is, then I can figure out. This article attaches to my research topic of gaming addiction. In addition, in this type of addiction, teenager take the most part of it, because children are more easily fall interest on the thing which is fantasy or they can’t do in the real world. I think this article can be improve more on the part of how parents should do to prevent their child not addict to gaming and what action should they take when their child already has video game addiction.

    A)  In the article “The Evolution of Internet Addiction: A Global Perspective” by Mark d. Griffiths et all. talks about authors such as Kimberly Yung and disproves their arguments that internet addiction is a real disorder. The author starts talking about Young’s work on internet addiction and how incomplete her research was. The author states “There is no doubt that her early writings on the topic inspired many others to carry out research in the area. However, her paper on the “evolution of internet addiction” -while admittedly personal and brief – mentioned very little of European research and did not consider the main international evidence that contributed to our current knowledge about the conceptualization, epidemiology, etiology and course of Internet – related disorders.” (Page 193) This quote shows how Kimberly Young’s work is very biased and that she did not include the research of other groups specifically from Europe that talk about internet addiction related disorders. Later on in the article the author talks about reasons for why internet addiction cannot be generalized as a disorder. The author states, “The dominant view, which indirectly resulted in the APA’s choice to favor the term “Internet Gaming Disorder” and reject “Internet addiction”, is that a gaming addict is not addicted to the internet per se but simply uses it as medium to engage in the chosen behavior in the chosen behavior.” (Page 194) This quote shows how the author disproves the term “Internet Addiction” and states how the internet is used as a medium for others to use for other activities which can be addictive such as gaming. At the end of the article the author explains Young’s view of internet addiction in other countries such as South Korea. The author states “Young also claimed a number of times that the US should learn from what is going on in Korea regarding IA treatment and prevention. However, the present authors’ view is that such assertion does not take into account the cultural discrepancies in attitudes towards Internet use in South east Asia and elsewhere.” (page 195) This quote shows how Young did not include the opinion of those specific countries regarding to their internet use. This is highly dependent on the countries culture and what is considered normal in their society.

    B)   This article was very interesting because it talked about internet addiction at a more explained view while quoting a wide range of sources. I found myself confused where I stand on the topic of internet addiction in terms of is it real or not. The article states that it could be dependent on where you’re from and your culture. For this reason, I need to explore the topic more to get more of an idea where the world stands on this “issue”. This article fails to mention the possibility of a form of internet addiction and what might those side effects be? The article could also explain some definitions used to describe how data was gathered when testing others for “internet addiction”.

  7. A. An idea that is central to Gregory’s article “Internet Addiction Disorder: Signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments for those who may be addicted to the Web on their PC or smartphone” is that Internet Addiction is a disorder. Gregory uses this idea to explain the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatments. Gregory says that the excessive use of social media is a sign of Internet Addiction. On page four, Gregory claims that Facebook, a platform that people use to socialize is providing multiple unpredictable layer of rewards in the sense that every time you sign on, you get unexpected good news. Also on page four, Gregory claims that “Biological predispositions to Internet Addiction disorder may also be a contributing factor to the disorder.” , I disagree with this because I have read another article that is about a gambling addict’s son avoiding gambling for his whole life. He was never addicted to gambling. This contradicts Gregory’s claim because not everyone suffers from dopamine and serotonin deficiency. On page seven, Gregory says that people use the internet to escape reality. I agree with Gregory because I remember when I would go on my phone to avoid a conversation with certain people. On page eight, Gregory claims that Internet Addiction can resolve on its own. However, some people might be suffering from anxiety and depression which may lead to Internet Addiction. This requires medication and it will slowly go away if anxiety and depression is treated correctly. In 2013, a USB-connected keyboard device was created to treat the people who are internet addicts. The device was preventing users from visiting particular websites. It is weird to see people using this specific device to control this disorder. In conclusion,I feel like Gregory is right about the existence of Internet Addiction as a disorder.

    B. I found that this article helped inform me on the many definitions of Internet Addiction. It informed me on the symptoms, signs, diagnosis, and treatments. I found that the article was difficult to understand when Gregory was talking about biological predisposition. I feel like if I did some research on biological predisposition, then I would understand the passage a little bit more. Also this passage fails to mention the other side of the debate. Gregory should mention why others wouldn’t consider Internet Addiction as a disorder. I feel like the Gregory should include more examples that would help backup her claims.

  8.     In “Yes You Can Experience Trauma from Consuming Social Media”,Nicolas Winspear talks about how people get traumatized by seeing tragic news on social media which impacts them mentally. On page 1,Winspear claims that social media helps horrible events to leak fast. The other key point that Winspear makes on page 2 is spending a lot of time on social media can lead to being traumatized because by spending so much time on social media you become addicted to it and also by being on social media you can’t control what contents you see. Lastly his third point is how we could prevent trauma from social media is by preventing the interaction with the tragic news and social media it self. For example in the article Dr..Brock says “ That more than hour a week spent on social  networks can lead to trouble. The more time you spend, the more likely experts believe, you are exposed to potentially traumatizing content”( Winspear 2). This means that by just using social media platforms we could be easily exposed to the traumatic events because you can’t control what’s in your feed. There is no way that we could prevent it from seeing. For example when we’re on our instagram page, there is always that one post with a fighting or with anything violent.Everytime we see those posts and news we become paranoid and always think about it. So, as Winspear said we could prevent trauma by not using social media because we’re less likely to be exposed to a tragic news.
As I read the article the most helpful information that I found was that we need to spend less time online because it decreases the effects of trauma. Also how media traumas can be cured by talking with  a teacher or parent about what is happening. It was hard for me to understand the part where the author talks about “crisis event being a pebble
depending upon a magnitude of the event being dropped in a pond of water”. This part in my opinion was kinda off topic and confusing. Lastly this article fails to mention more key points about an online trauma.
