8/29 // Wortham, “My Selfie, Myself” Prompts (+ HW for next wk)

  1. Where do you notice Jenna Wortham (author of “My Selfie, Myself”) using narrative in the first page of her article?  Where else in the article does she use it?
  2. What are some of the reasons you think Wortham chose to use narration in her article?  To what effect? What is she trying to show?
  3. On the second and third pages of her article, Wortham discusses several different purposes of selfies (i.e., why people post them).  Use your own words to describe a couple of them.
  4. Begin writing about a narrative from your own life that connects to prompt 3, above.

HW for Wed // WRITING: Find some public place where it’s comfortable to sit and people watch.  Sit for 20 minutes and describe in detail what you see and hear: the setting, the people (how they look and act), any significant objects (smartphones, dogs, baby carriages, etc.).  Be sure to record anything weird you notice as well as everything you notice people doing with their phones. READING: In the Articles packet, read Sherry Turkle’s “The Empathy Gap” (pp. 8–13) and Mike Bunn’s “How to Read Like a Writer” (pp. 14–17).

  1. In the first page of her article, Jenna uses narrative at the very opening of her writing; uses it again in the first page in the beginning of her second paragraph. She also uses it on the third page going into the fourth page when she explains

  2. In the first page of her article, Jenna uses narrative at the very opening of her writing; uses it again in the first page in the beginning of her second paragraph. She also uses it on the third page going into the fourth page when she explains how she wasn’t really into the whole selfie thing and how it took her some time to get into it by noticing the feeling she got from when other’s posted their selfies etc.

I think Jenna chose to use narration in her article to kind of give off the idea where she can tell her story and link it to experiences that she’s come across to try and show/share possible connections with her readers.

Throughout the second page, Wortham describes “taking a selfie” as being a way to kind of keep up with the world, which in my words is ‘trying to get others to see you in a different light’ (in some cases, your own light, which few, here and there can make their own adjustments to). In my opinion, I agree with her 100% because now-a-days people do try to get others through social media to see them completely different than what they really are. Some may edit their photos whether it is to make their skin look a little lighter/darker, make their shape in size look a little smaller/bigger, etc. In my opinion these things show nothing but lack of self esteem in others. However, on the third page, she goes on to contrast her first few ideas on the topic of selfies which in shorter terms states the depth behind selfies and how its much more than just a pretty face and a photo, its more like an expression of how you’re feeling throughout the day.

Narrative: I was just transitioning in coming from a seventh-day adventist school to stepping into my first public school my eighth grade year, I never owned a phone or knew how to take selfies or anything like that, so it was a new thing for me; kind of like entering a whole new time zone and everything has forwarded but you just have to go along with it. Moving along, I made a few friends who were so into “Camera 360” and all those cool camera apps; I always noticed how they’d take pictures anywhere they went whether it was science class or math class etc., just to try out all the effects on their picture to see which one made them look better. Fast forward, I got into the whole selfie thing, and although I didn’t own a phone, they’d lend me their’s which is the reason I got into it in the first place and after a while, I too started using effects on my pictures and yes, it does give you a feeling of confidence not knowing the more you use it the more you get confident in the skin you are with the effect which amounts to the less comfortable you get when you don’t use it.

  3. The author, Jenna Wortham, open her writing narrative when she says “Recently, I came across a great find in a Vermont antiques store…” She uses narrative again in her third paragraph when she says “I don’t know Mr. Winfield personally…” Also, narrative is seen at the 4 paragraph. and a few more time throughout the article. however, therein portion if narrative is on the first paragraph, while her thoughts come to mind look at the picture she’d found.

I think that the author propose of using narrative was to catch people’s attention, since story-telling is somehow not boring. Also, her narrative on the first paragraph connects to the topic of this article.

People do post pictures for vanity, just to show how where they are, what they are doing and how.

  4. In the article “My Selfie, Myself,” Jenna Wortham uses narrative in the first page by telling her story about when she’s visited an antiques shop and  viewed “ …a female pilot on a mountaintop, her aviator glasses pushed up on her forehead, revealing a satisfied, wind-burned face, the wings of her plane just behind her. But the best part of the discovery was the slow realization that she was holding the camera herself. It was, for lack of a better word a selfie.” Throughout the article, she continues to use narrative on the third and fourth pages as she describes her experience when she’s first used instagram.

I believe Wortham uses narrative in some parts of her article so that the reader is able to imagine what she was going through and see what she saw in that moment.

On the second and third pages of her article, Wortham discusses several different purposes of selfies. Some of these include, to get good feedback on a post, give a more personal way to share experiences, get in contact with old friends and it’s like a kind of “visual diary.”

Narrative: It was my sixth grade year of middle school. It’s been two years since my mother had finally decided to let my older sister and I start going home by ourselves. Prior to my sixth year in middle school, my sister and I had to share one phone, I think my mom thought I wasn’t ready for one on my own. Nonetheless, in sixth grade I finally got a phone and needless to say, I took advantage. I no longer had to worry about my sister seeing who I texted or what pictures I was taking on “our” phone. When I first got my phone, I was a little embarrassed because it was a purple LG flip phone but my mentality was “beggars can’t be choosers”. For that reason, I never took my phone to school, but still had time to brag to my other friends about how I had finally gotten my own phone. One of the first things I did was download instagram and take a million pictures (after I added friends as contacts). Granted, these were not front face selfies, but they were your average sixth grade, 12 year old girl mirror selfies. I posted most of these pictures and I remember feeling so ecstatic that I got 12 likes on a photo with my tongue sticking out and holding up a peace sign.

  5. In the article , Jenna Use the article to describe deeply throughout the entire paragraphs How much of a fan she wasn’t of selfies and trying to comprehend What’s the real concept behind selfies and why Is it so loved through the people .

I believe Jenna chosed this narrative because she’s having an experience with the readers In a tone where we could understand the emotion put through The Text and that she doesn’t come across boring and make it Enjoyable for her as the writer and the audience.

I notice the Author Jenna Wortham uses narrative to example his Selfie Isn’t new and the Invention has been around and that Benny or anyone besides Benny weren’t first leaders of Selfies. In  line 1of the  paragraph 3 Jenna quotes “‘The self – Portraits are worlds and decades apart. But they are threaded together by a timeless delight in our ability  to document lives and leave behind a trace for others to discover “ That line explains It how Jenna breaks down thr history of Selfies.

I can be able to connect with Jenna Wortham because one of thr quotes In which she says “ At times , It feels largely performative , way to polish who we are , or who we’d like to appear to be selfies often veer into scandalous or shameless territory “ One of thr reasons this quote stood out to me and was very true in my opinion Is because the obsession of beauty and Image has our minds being controlled by society to always update ourselves with pictures on how we look to sorta keep up  and to not Be forgotten so picture taking and selfies has controlled us that we constantly have to go beyond that we are In a good space On social media

  6. In the article “My Selfie, Myself” written by Jenna Wortham, she begins her piece with narration which captures the reader as it is a personal story that makes a reader want to know more. Not only did she begin with a narrative but she also continued this pattern along towards the end of the article as she talks of how she noticed photos transforming in selfies way before the “selfie movement”.

The reason why Wortham choose to use narration in her article was to give a reader a sense of connection, like they were in the situation themselves. This creates a connection between the writer; Jenna Wortham and the reader.

The several different purposes of a selfie include firstly, your face and expressions are a caption narrating a story you wish to tell. Secondly, its a way to let you family and friends know what you up to. Lastly, it’s a way for people to tag themselves into the world of social media which has everyone sucked in because it has become considerably a form of “expression” and well as selfies; they express and narrate your life and story.

  7. Jenna Wortham started article with narrative and used it in several following paragraphs. She also used it on second and third pages, usually after giving examples from advertisements. I think she used narrative in those specific areas to give another example about selfies to compare, and to show us that it is or has impacted. Another reason I think she chose narration is that she is trying to show us that it had an effect to almost everyone. In my opinion, there are a lot of different reasons why people post selfies. Usually, they post selfies that shows background to let others know that the person is spending time in certain place, or with certain people. Another reason is that they like to be seen a lot and like to give attention to them. They are usually trying to do it online, using social medias.

I personally don’t over exaggerate with the selfies, and especially with posting them on social medias. One of the main reason I take selfies is to keep it as memory. It’s always nice to look at the old picture and think about it, how the day went, with whom I spent it and how nice it was. Though, I sometimes post selfies, mostly with someone else in picture, to let others know that with whom I have spent my day and to show my mood to internet.

  8. 1. The author, Jenna Wortham started the article off with a narrative in the first three paragraphs describing the time when she found photos of selfies. Narratives were also used on page 4, which was describing her experience in sharing selfies online.

    2. Wortham might’ve chose to use narrations in her article to help readers understand what she is trying to express about how technology is changing how we do thins now. It could also just be the author wanting the readers to understand the fun in selfies.

    3. People might be posting selfies online in order to gain attention from others. People might also be able to use selfies to tell how the person in the photo is feeling from the person’s expression.

    4. In my life, I’ve never taken a selfie by myself. What can be considered a selfie is only the time when my mother forced me to take photos with her which was later posted on WeChat which is a Chinese social media. The reason why I never take selfies is because I do not see a point in doing so.

  9. The author of “My Selfie, Myself”, Jenna Wortham, use narrative on the begin of article, instead telling her own story of what she find in a Vermont antiques store, she chose to describe what she saw over there. Through the article, auther also utilizes narrative in many part of article, like on the end of third page and top of last page, she using it to show how she change her Instagram picture style from scene to selfies.

I think Wortham chose to use narration in her article because she want to let reader connect the information on the article to themselves, everyone have experience of posting their selfies on the Instagram or etc. That can make people more easy to understand it. Also, she want to show different effect of the selfies.

Wortham discusses several different purposes of selfies on second and third pages of her article. For example, some people post their selfies to show to their family and friends about how well about him/her day. Furthermore, some people posting their selfies picture to tell his/her story,  because people are more easier to recognize emotion by looking at picture, rather than reading a paragraph. It also can be use to show about what he/she doing, where he/she is, and etc.

Narrative: The first time I got the smart phone is when I was seventh grade,  but at that moment, I have no idea of what is selfie, doesn’t hear is ever. As the time pass, I begin yo know more about phone and everything about it, which include selfies. The first time I head and have contact which selfies is during my high school life. However , because I’m not that kind person who like to take selfies and post it, so I don’t really pay many attention on it. Later on, selfies become more popular, almost all of my friends in Facebook or Instagram start to post their selfies, some of them even use it as their icon. Honestly, although I don’t take selfies, it also help me out on some different way, such as help me to remember someone, instead looking at their name and trying to figure out. Also for me to know what is going on around me.

  11. In the article “My Selfie, Myself” Jenna Wortham uses narration at the opening paragraph of her first page where she talks about her “discovery” in the antiques store. She also uses narration in the second paragraph going into the third paragraph where she talks about photos being shared in social media platforms. Moreover she uses narration on the third page and forth page talking about the whole idea of “Selfies”.

Wortham chose to use narration in her article because she wanted to add her personal experience and make the readers to connect to her experience and make it more realistic.

On the second and third pages of her article, Wortham discusses several purposes of selfies when people post them on a social media platforms. For example in the third page she talks about how people share their selfies to show their emotions through their day. Also on the third page when she says “selfies appear to nudge some friends……” which shows how selfies connect people because as she said through the selfies friends could see each others daily life and maybe would wanna meet up.

Narrative: When I was in middle school I’ve never understood the idea of taking selfies everywhere you go. I remember how my friends always use to take selfies anywhere they went even the school bathrooms. I always use to ask them why they were so crazy about selfies. Well as I got older I started to take selfies and then as time passed I just became crazy as my friends. I realized how taking a selfie helps you to keep memories and how it really does show your emotions through your expression and the filters that you use sometimes or the captions that you write under your selfie.

  12. The other day it was a really nice weather so i decided to go to the park\playground. As I was sitting on the bench I noticed that there were a lot of trees, kids with their parents and benches.  Also I heard how kids laughter and birds. But when I looked at the parents one thing that i specifically noticed was they all were busy either talking on the phone or just being on their phones while their kids were playing. They didn’t even watch after their kids. after several minutes I saw a kid telling his mom that he wants to go home because he was hungry (in  different language:Russian) and she just told him to go back and play because she was so busy talking on her phone. This shows how technology not only have impacted the youth but parents too because they don’t even pay attention to their kids.

  13.
    1. In the first page of her article, Jenna Wortham (author of “My Selfie, Myself”), uses narrative for the first three paragraphs. Then she continues using it in the ninth paragraph. For the next page, she uses narrative in the seventh paragraph

    2. Wortham chose to use narration in her article to show that she was there. She is using imagery to share her experience.

    3. A selfie is a photo taken to share a special moment that you want others to see. A different purpose of taking a selfie is to send a message (usually similar to a text message)  to the viewer(s). Another purpose of taking a selfie is to advertise or inspire viewers.

    1. Narrative: When I entered high school as a freshman, my cousin gave me the smartphone she was using, so she can get a brand new Samsung Galaxy S5. I didn’t mind the fact that it had a bad camera until I took a selfie. I sent the selfie to a friend and on my friend’s phone it was blurry. At first, I thought my hands weren’t steady enough, but after countless selfies I came to the conclusion that the problem was with the camera. By the end of high school, I bought an I-phone 7 and I started using other social media apps such as Snapchat, Instagram, and etc.

  14. 1. Where do you notice Jenna Wortham (author of “My Selfie, Myself”) using narrative in the first page of her article?  Where else in the article does she use it?
Jenna Wortham starts using narrative at the very beginning of the article when she starts describing the antiques store in Vermont. Wortham includes narrative whenever she is describing something or explaining something in other people’s words. This can be seen on page 2 when she talks about the developers of Vine in first person referring to a front facing camera mode for the Vine application.
2.What are some of the reasons you think Wortham chose to use narration in her article?  To what effect? What is she trying to show?
Some reasons why Wortham chose to use narrative in her article was to engage the reader in her writing allowing her to make clear and focused points which the reader will take and apply them to their own experience with selfies. This will also expand the view of selfies to other people by hopefully making this idea more mainstream, by involving others that are not used to selfies and make them more accustomed to them.
3.On the second and third pages of her article, Wortham discusses several different purposes of selfies (i.e., why people post them).  Use your own words to describe a couple of them.
In her article Wortham states that “They (Selfies) are often more effective at conveying a feeling or reaction than text.” This shows how selfies or other images for that matter show a deeper message then words because an image can be defined differently by other individuals. Another purpose for selfies is to keep in touch with old friends on social media. Jenna explains how a new selfie post can prompt old friends of theirs into selecting that image and messaging the other person to meet one another someday.
4.Begin writing about a narrative from your own life that connects to prompt 3, above.
I rarely partake in any “Selfie” activities myself, if I post something on social media its mainly something interesting or funny (well to me…). The only time that I do take a selfie is when I’m forced to by my family.

  15. In the article, “My Selfie, Myself”, I notice Jenna Wortham, the author, has been using narrative in the first page of her article in the sentence when she said, “RECENTLY, I came across a great find in a Vermont antiques store…” She also use narrative when she had a flashblack. For example, “It reminded me of another self-portrait of sorts, one  I’ve been watching evolve online of the mysterious Benny Winfield Jr.” Another one, “I don’t know Mr.Winfield personally, but I’ve seen his face most days for the past few months…”

Some of the reasons I think Wortham chose to use narrative in her article, means to define yourself. To effect, in different ways, such as, taking a self-portrait, FaceTime, Skype, etc. Wortham is trying to show us that “selfie” is a new generation of describing yourself defining who you are.

On the second and third pages of her article, Wortham discusses several different purposes of selfies. For instance, “Taking a photograph is a way of trying to understand how people see you, who you are and what you look like, and there’s nothing wrong with that,” She said. She meant the only way people will understand your background is taking a picture of yourself and send or post it. Another example she said, “…it is about showing your friends and family your elation when your having a good day or opening a dialogue…” In other words, “Selfie” is also one of the best ways to show your happiness and post it to others especially the people you are close with.

The first time I took a selfie was actually in the 9th grade when Mayor De Blaiso allowed cell phones in school. So I asked my Mom, “May I please get a phone.” The reason I wanted a phone because I don’t want my friends to realize I been texting them through my laptop this whole. So the day when we can bring our phone to school, everyone had their phone out texting, laughing, exchanging numbers, etc. So my friends came to me and ask, “Where’s your phone?” I said, I forgot it at home. On the other hand, when I came home, my mom grabbed her bag and we went to T-mobile and a phone for myself. After I had my new phone in my hand, I took my first selfie with my mom; she was not ready but it was worth it. It’s amazing how technology has come a long way. You don’t need someone to take a picture of you, you can do it yourself.

  16. 1) Jenna Wortham is using narrative in the beginning of the article , when she talks about the antiques store. She uses it in the third paragraph when she is describing her though on the leader of the selfie movement (Mr Winfield).

    2) she uses narration in her article to engage the reader in her writing .

    3) In paragraph #11 pg 3/4 it states” the idea of the selfie is much more like your face is the caption and you’re trying to explain a moment or telling a story”. Wortham is basically explaining that selfies can have a deeper meaning .

  17. 1) Jenna Wortham used narrative in the first paragraph of page one where she talked about going to a vintage store and seeing an old picture a woman took of herself that would be considered a selfie today. She also used narrative on page two in the seven paragraph to talk about how she was around during the beginning of the selfie fad as an early instagram user.

    2) I think that Wortham chose to use narrative as a way to give more credibility to the points she’s trying to get across about selfies, sort of like using herself as a first hand witness leaving a testimony. She used narrative on the first page to bring up the topic of selfies and their prevalence by talking about her experience seeing an old selfie in a vintage store. On the second page she uses narrative to frame herself as a personal witness to Instagrams sudden influx of selfies during her time there as an early user.

    3) People take selfies as a way to capture their feelings while they were doing something or to remember the past and where they were at one point, like a visual   diary.

    4) When I was in middle school I used my sisters old iPod Touch to text people and listen to music. There was a camera but I only ever used it to take pictures of my cat. When I started high school I got my first phone but I still had no interest in taking pictures of myself. It wasn’t until the second month of school that I had to use my phone to take my first ever selfie. It was a freshman art class and my teacher introduced our assignment, monochromatic self portraits. I had to take a selfie and send it to her so she could add a monochromatic filter over it and I could start my painting. I was only used to people taking pictures of me but the assignment had to be a selfie so I spent 30 minutes trying to take a selfie that looked good enough for me to want to paint. In this case I used a selfie as a way to have a good image of myself for others to see when I eventually painted it and kept it.

  18. The author of ” My Selfie, Myself” Jenna Wortham used narrative in her first paragraph. She talked about how she had to went to a vintage store and had saw an old photo where a women took a picture back in the day that would consider to be a selfie today. Later in reading, around page two she still uses narrative when she talks about how she was around the time where selfie had started and had been a Instagram user.

Wortham chose to use narration in her article because she wants to talk about selfie by using her own experience and her surroundings about it. For example, on the first page Wortham talked about the old vintage picture and used her own experience about selfies. Then the second page she uses narrative to talk about her time using Instagram and how different it is from now.

The reason why people take selfies is because they want to keep memories or to be able to show off what they are doing. This generation people have so much vanity towards themselves that we have the power to be able to change how we look.

My first selfie was in middle school. I was in the sixth grade and everybody had androids(old). But I had a really small phone that was from tracfone. I remember it only had a back camera; there wasn’t a front camera. I had the worst phone out of my whole class. But I was able to text and call when I needed too. Everyone had Facebook and I was the only who didn’t, but my friends would show me how our classmates would post pictures with the mirror. So I thought I should follow what they were doing. So at home I took a stool and went to the bathroom. I looked at the mirror and made a pose then that’s when my first selfie was born. I usually take selfies if I like how I look that day or I want to save a special memory about that day.

  19. I notice that Jenna Wortham used narrative in the first page of the article “My Selfie, Myself” in the first few paragraphs. You could tell because she is trying to tell a story about how she discovered selfies. This lead to her thinking about other times she saw selfies but didn’t realize she was looking at a selfie. She also uses narrative on the second page two paragraphs 9-13 she starts explaining how seeing selfies of others who she hasn’t seen in a while makes you want to reach out and have a chat.

The Reason that Wortham chose to use narration her article was to tell a story from her point of view. The effects that this has is that she is probably trying to make her readers come across her ideas as if it was them. I think Jenna is trying to show how storytelling in the first person could be interesting.

Selfies could be used as self-expressions because most selfies that I see are determined by the mood that person is in.

I don’t take selfies alone because it’s mostly it mostly is about expressions and emotions. That’s why I don’t take selfies.

  20. 1) I notice Jenna Wortham using narrative in the first paragraph when she starts to describe the photo of the pilot selfie.   Another example is in the third paragraph when she starts to describe Mr. Winfield and his selfies.

    2) I think Wortham uses narration in her article to relay an idea to the reader in a interesting way that catches their attention.  She tries to explain in detail a story in a way that makes you feel like you can see exactly what shes writing about.

3)One reason for posting a selfie might be to show that your having a good time and want people to see that.  Another could be to show that you were at a certain location or event and that’s your proof of being there.

  27. 1. In the article”My Selfie, My self”, Jenna Wortham uses narrative at the beginning of the article. Talk about when she knows about selfies. She also used narrative in the ninth paragraph.

    2. Wortham was trying use narrations to describe her experience at the selfie and she wants the reader to learn about the selfie.

    3. Some people might post selfies to show their current mood, they might also use selfies to attract someone’s attention.

    4. The first time I took a selfie was in middle school with my friend, it happened at his birthday party. But the reason we took selfies were not trying to gain attention from others. We were trying to record all the good times that we had.

  28. Jenna wortham uses narrative in the beginning of her articles where she starts describing the setting of where she is describing the selfies , it continues to paragraph 3 where she says “I don’t Mr. Wienfield personally, but I’ve seen his face….”. She uses narration to describe the plot of where her story is and where it goes to throughout the story and to engage the readers. Some purposes of a selfie can be to capture a moment that you can never re-live again to remember your lost moments rather than losing it in the back of your brain. Selfies can also be used as evidence, to prove you were in a specific place at a certain time.

`My friend and I were out eating lunch and she happened to take a picture of her food, I was wondering in my head that maybe I should do the same thing because we barely hang out and this is the first time in a while that we’ve been out just hanging out, we then beginning to dig in our food while we talk and catch up, were still seating there although we already finished eating but I just wanted to sit there a save the moment sooner or later I knew it was coming to an end, so i told my friend how can we save this moment and she pulled out her phone and said smile for snapchat the picture came out so nice and there was a filter with the date and time so I would never forget

  29. In the article “My Selfie,Myself”, Jenna Wortham uses narrative in the first page of the article she describes how her selfie reminded her of someone named Benny Winfield Jr who posted a lot of selfies on the social media platform Instagram. “I don”t know Mr. Winfield personally, but I’ve seen his face most days for the past few months, in dozens of photographs he shares on the social networking application instagram. from here she goes on about how big the selfie phenomenon is. “Selfies have become the catchall term for digital self portraits abetted by the explosion of cellhpone cameras and photo editing and sharing services. every major social media is overflowing with millions of them.”

Wortham chose narration in her article to capitalize on the effect that selfies has had on the world. “the idea of the selfie is much more like your face is the caption and you’re trying to explain a moment or tell a story.” Wortham is saying that a story can be found within each selfie posted anywhere online. Depending on the expression someone makes in a selfie and the location they’re in, you can get a gist of the scenario in the selfie. A selfie is enough to tell someone that you’re in a good mood or you could not believe something is happening, it all depends on the expressions someone shows in a selfie. Wortham wants people to understand the impact selfies has and the satisfaction it brings people to be able to share their experiences by posting them online. When I took a selfie on a cruise to Cuba anyone was able to tell that I was in the middle of the ocean and happy about where I was going when posting this picture due to the many pointers in the picture.
