For my presentation, I want to explore how zines have been used to share knowledge about women’s rights, especially in communities that don’t always have access to mainstream information. I’ll start by looking at the history of how certain groups, such as poor women, women of color, and queer folks, have been left out of conversations around legal rights, health, and workplace protections. I will also introduce zines, how they’re made, and why they became important to DIY and activist culture. I’ve been looking at a couple of databases containing lots of information on zines and printed matter being a vehicle to knowledge accessibility, and I was happy to see there was a CUNY Graduate Center report on it.
