Armstrong, Helen. “Introduction: Revisiting the Avant-Garde” Graphic Design Theory: Readings From the Field, Princeton Architectural Press, 2009. Pages 9-15Q

Do you notice similarities between avant-garde movements of the past and the design field (or the world) of today?

Avant-garde is a very interesting word used in the field of graphic design, when using this word in design it refers to the experimental of new ideas or unusual ideas in art. The avant garde movement has kept some of its trends from the past as it cultivates in the modern day, such as using our own biases (objectivity) to a matter of how this makes you feel (subjectivity). As a designer, creating with my own bias in mind doesn’t convey empathy to my viewer. Another standing point is emotion over being neutral when creating, this also plays a significant role in having empathy. Authorship could be defined as giving credit and holding information accountable for published work by creators of different mediums. Universality is a shared or quality of involvement by all people in the world or in particular groups. Social responsibility is an ethical theory in which individuals are accountable for fulfilling their civic duty, and the actions of an individual must benefit the whole of society.

I think a very good example of Universality is Inkobter. It’s an amazing way that artists no matter the skill level they work together and draw to uplift each other and feel like some have a voice in a community they don’t think that they have any apart of.

I think the future of design, as it relates to avant-garde, will be led by social impact matters. Today’s society is very sensitive to issues and concerns happening around them or in the world.
