Abstract

Abstract is an original Netflix documentary series that presents famous creative designers from different creative fields, such as photography, graphic design, illustration, architecture and much more. It was very interesting to watch due to seeing their stories, their journeys  and also their passion for what they do. One of the episodes that I found very interesting is episode 6 from Paula Scher due to her being one of my favorite graphic designers.

It was very interesting to see what she has designed, how she gets her inspirations and how she is always filled with ideas. There were a couple of things that she has designed that I wasn’t aware of, such as the windows 8 logo and I also did not know that she designed for Rockaway Beach after Hurricane Sandy. I live in Rockaway Beach and I have walked passed the new designs of the area on the boardwalk and it is beautifully designed and I now know that it is the work  of Paula Scher. I like many of her work. I find that her album covers are very interesting and how she loves using typography for the album covers. Which Typography is her strong point in design. Her album cover designs are very original and unique. I also personally like her Boston album cover which I find it very interesting that she dislikes it. I also liked her logo designs for Pier 55. I think that it is very clever. Which it contains elements of the shape of the pier. I also like her logo design and her general designs for the Public Theater.

Paula Scher came from a family who were school teachers and her father being a map maker. She had a high IQ and she was expected to be an engineer. She states that her father thought “Art is stupid and engineers are serious” yet she pursued her dream. She was in high school and she was always in art class and that is where she would rather be. She ended up going to an art university. Therefore she discovered her love for typography and design. She moved to New York and she had celebrities seeing her in order to design album covers for them. She said that she was a kid having the best job in New York.

After watching this episode and seeing and listening about her love for typography makes me want to practice and work hard on my typography. Due to typography not being a strong point for me. To Paula Scher she presents her message through her designs and her typography.  For example her Ads for the Public Theater. She made it present New York through her typography designs.

Paula Scher is considered the goddess of graphic design and I can see why. All artist, designers, people in the creative field are all story tellers and they tell a story throughout their work.
