• Is an Apple Really Red? Color Theory and Color Interactions

Objectives

To teach students the basics of color science and theory and show how the theory is applied in the industry in the Creative Cloud software and in OS system software and other industry design tools. Students will learn the difference between the additive (RGB) and subtractive color space (CMYK) as well as be introduced to the Pantone Matching System. (PMS) for color. They will also learn appropriate terminology for describing color schemes in graphic design such as warm and cool, monochromatic, complementary, and analogous.

Discussion/Lecture

We will take your first quiz at the beginning of class.

Let’s begin class answering this simple question: What color is this bag below, which is for sale at a local Brooklyn retailer?

What color do you see as the dominant color in this bag?
What about this jacket from Supreme’s Spring lookbook 2021?
