Kurtis Wallace- Cover Letter

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am an eager, young college student who is looking to get an entry level position at your advertising company. I have seen countless designs produced by your company and they never cease to amaze me. I enjoy your unique style and dedication to whatever you create or promote.

My education is pretty decent grade wise. I graduated from high school in 2010 with a regents diploma. Currently I am in CUNY New York City College of Technology. My major is Communication Design which involves advertising and art related projects. The world of advertising has fascinated me for many years. Whenever a commercial, billboard, poster or magazine ad goes the comedic route it completely draws me in.

As far as experience goes most of mine comes from my time in college. Most of my advertising classes involved me using three pieces of software from the Adobe Creative Suite. They were Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.

Kurtis Wallace – Mini Job Search

My strengths as an employee are that I am a very trustworthy person and a very dedicated worker. Also I have good people skills and a lot of patience to deal with any issue that may come my way. Drawing is a skill that I have which I continue to develop every chance that I get. Animals and animated characters are two things that I enjoy drawing. As far as computer program skills go I have moderate experience with Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign and Adobe Illustrator. I am always willing to try a new program if given the chance. Currently I am seeking a career in the advertising / graphic design department. This type of career offers a lot of versatility which is what interests me the most. One day I hope to achieve my personal goal of having a design that I have created become known worldwide. Making designs for posters ,books and billboards is a strong interest of mine. Working in groups or individually are both fine with me.

My job search introduced  me to many different employers with similar things that they looked for in an employee. Most of the employers that I looked at wanted an employee who had a Bachelor’s degree and at least 1 or 2 years of experience. They also wanted someone who was experienced with the whole Adobe Creative Suite but specifically Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. Two job titles I saw often were intern and junior graphic designer. My time at City Tech has helped me skill-wise. It was here that I was introduced to the Adobe programs which I use today. The school assignments that were given to me allowed me the chance to try out the different tools that were in some of the Adobe programs.

Kurtis – Introduction

My name is Kurtis Wallace. I am 22 years old and I want to be in the advertising business. Ever since I was a little kid I’ve always had an interest in commercials and other forms of advertising. My one hobby that I enjoy doing is drawing, mostly sketches in pencil. I don’t write very often but two of my strengths are that I use good grammar in my writing and I have great spelling skills. My one weakness in writing is probably my punctuation. I dislike writing long drawn out explanations unless the subject that I am writing about is interesting to me.  Usually I get straight to the point in my writing. Majoring in advertising has allowed me the opportunity  to work in many different programs. The three that I am most skilled at using are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Indesign and Adobe Illustrator. These three programs make up most of my technological background. I use these three programs to make posters, billboards and book covers.

Technical writing sounds like writing multiple paragraphs on a particular subject in great detail. The phrase “getting technical” means to go into specifics usually about a person, place, thing or idea. I’m assuming that this advanced career writing class will help to inform me about what technical writing is and how to use it. Going forward I will probably use this skill to help me get an internship and then a career.
