Dear Jason Rand:

I read your company’s description in on February 4, 2013, and would like to inquire about employment opportunities in your Graphic Design Intern position. I want to offer my skills and knowledge and work in your Graphic design development team as an intern.

My interest in your company was aroused after browsing through your online web page and much research. I was simply fascinated by the order and placement of everything. It gave me an idea about your company and what it specialized in. Further looking into HarrisonRand, I learned about some of the package designed work your company did and some history behind HarrisonRand Advertising Inc. HarrisonRand Advertising of Guttenberg was one of only three-generation ad agencies in the history of New Jersey, and won six awards at the NJ Ad Club’s Jersey Awards. Specializing in many services including advertising, collateral Design, Multimedia and TV production, Packaging, and website development, I was convinced that your company is where I want to be.

My skills in Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign can be an additional asset to HarrisonRand advertising Inc. Advertising has always been an inspiration in my life. Growing up as a kid, I was captivated by the art in advertising. Used as a way to convey information in our day to day activities, Advertising is part of everything we see or do. As a beginner, using Photoshop, illustrator and Indesign was easy to learn for me. Since then, my skills and knowledge about it has grown a great deal along the way. I believe my knowledge and skills can contribute to HarrisonRand Adverising Inc. You provide the kind of professional design intern program I seek.

Inside is my enclosed resume for your consideration. I believe my education and skills match the desired qualifications you seek for your Graphic design intern trainees, but they don’t tell the whole story. If you feel my educational background, as well as my creative and technical skills fit the requirements for the intern position, I can be available for an interview at your earliest convenient to discuss how I might contribute positively to your design team. You can reach me at or by phone at 917-519-8329.

Thank you for your time and consideration for my application. I look forward to hearing from you.

    • Reverse Engineer the Letter: Without looking at the job ad/listing, read the letter. Then write down what you think the job ad says—you are reverse engineering the letter/ad by doing this—trying to see if you can figure out the job adjust from the letter.
in my opinion cover is should explain the job position that you are looking for and to show your skills in that particular field. I think it was well done and well explain about his interest about Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
    • Read the job ad. Were you close in your reverse engineering attempt? If you were, then the letter probably meets with some of the employer’s needs. If you weren’t, has the author missed understanding the employer’s needs? Or have they just emphasized certain things and overlooked others?
the author will understand the employer’s needs base on the description given about the position he is looking for.
    • Does the letter make the person applying seem like a good applicant; an unappealing applicant; or an outstanding applicant?
yes it does, very good applicant.
    • Explain why and how you made the judgment in #3. If the applicant was not an outstanding candidate, explain what you think the author needs to do to get into a higher pile.
Maybe if he give the cover letter more description about the position of the job. It would be better in my opinion if the writer give more details that can cover all the understanding that the reader will like to know at first.
    • Is the letter free of spelling, mechanical, and grammar errors? Let the author know about the errors you see.
Good grammar skill. No major error that we can see. Maybe he will need to take out the phone number aand email address that he posted at the top of the cover letter and at the last line in paragraph # 4.

1)Colver letter makes very easy to reverse engineer job posting.
2)Applicant did good research on company and their business. Clearly stated his expectations and qualifications.
3)Letter makes Kenneth outstanding applicant . He covered all the aspects including technical.
In my opinion applicant deserves at least face to face interview.
