Dear Mr. Byers,

Through my studies for a Bachelors in Legal Studies, I have gained strong skills in conducting legal research and a broad knowledge of the legal system. My professional goal is to apply this knowledge in order to provide quick and efficient research and administrative assistance for my next employer. Highlights of my background include the following:

I have completed courses in Intro to Paralegal Studies; Civil Law; Criminal Law; Legal Research; Ethics and Domestic Relations through the Legal Studies program at New York Technical College an ABA approved program.

I am a quick learner with strong analytic and problem-solving skills.  I have gained excellent feedback regarding timeliness and quality of completed projects throughout my academic career.  The accompanying resume will provide you with the additional details of my accomplishments and skills. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you and learn how I can make a positive contribution to your firm. I will call next week to inquire about the possibility of a meeting. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Dorothy E. Canton

•Does the letter make the person applying seem like a good applicant; an unappealing applicant; or an outstanding applicant?
    – Yes, it seems like that she has the proper skill set for this Job. I do think that she is looking for an entry position in paralegal industry.
•Explain why and how you made the judgment in #3. If the applicant was not an outstanding candidate, explain what you think the author needs to do to get into a higher pile.
    – N/A
•is the letter free of spelling, mechanical, and grammar errors? Let the author know about the errors you see.

    • Reverse Engineer the Letter: Without looking at the job ad/listing, read the letter. Then write down what you think the job ad says—you are reverse engineering the letter/ad by doing this—trying to see if you can figure out the job ad just from the letter.
I can only guess about it being an application to law firm. No job Title found.
    • Read the job ad. Were you close in your reverse engineering attempt? If you were, then the letter probably meets with some of the employer’s needs. If you weren’t, has the author missed understanding the employer’s needs? Or have they just emphasized certain things and overlooked others?
Paralegal is job category. But they have not mentioned employer’s name.

    Good applicant.
    • Explain why and how you made the judgment in #3. If the applicant was not an outstanding candidate, explain what you think the author needs to do to get into a higher pile.
I would move this line –“Highlights of my background include the following” to following paragraph and mention courses.
I would not put this line — “I will call next week to inquire about the possibility of a meeting.” I think it shows you want this job so badly, this may not be helpful during salary negotiation. Since you assume you are the best candidate while you apply, they will have to call you.

    No errors.
