Overview
Type Challenges are short assignments that we do during class. The objective of this assignment is to practice type pairing.
Instructions
- Create an InDesign document:
- 8.5″ x 11″
- 1″ margins
- Portrait
- 1 page
- No facing pages
- Save document as: Last Name_First_ TC_typepairing
- Type out “Type Pairing” ten times. For each time, you will do a different pairing study.
- Select any two contrasting typefaces for each word (one typeface per word).
- Consider:
- Weight (Bold, Light, etc)
- Width (Extended, Expanded, Condensed, etc)
- Posture (Regular or Roman, Italic, Oblique)
- Serif (brackets, angled, others)
- LABEL/ notate each typeface you choose.
- Consider:
- Save your work in InDesign and export a jpg named:
“Last Name_First_ TC_typepairing.jpg”. - In OpenLab, create a new post:
- Named “Last Name_First_ TC_typepairing”
- Select categories:
“Student Posts” and “Type Challenges”
- Insert .jpg INTO your post.
- IF CHALLENGE IS DONE AFTER CLASS, include a reflection in you OpenLab post instead of commenting on another student’s work. Talk about what you learned and noticed as you completed the assignment.
- IF CHALLENGE IS DONE IN CLASS/AS A GROUP, Comment on at least one other students work in OpenLab. Try to give your assessment in terms of what is working or not clear. “Loving or “liking” or thinking something is “really cool” is OK but not helpful. What and why the work is successful and what is not working is key in refining and improving work.
Due Date(s)
