Overview
Type Challenges are short assignments that we do during class. The objective of this assignment is to practice setting up and following a grid.
Instructions
- Create an InDesign document:
- 8.5″ x 11″
- 1 page, orientation vertical, NO facing pages
- 3 Columns
- .1667″ gutter
- .5″ margins Left, Right, Top: .6″ margin Bottom
- Once the document is open:
- Save it as: LastName_FirstName_ TC_Grid
- Select the A-Parent page
- Select LAYOUT > CREATE GUIDES (in menu bar)
- Add 7 rows, no columns
- .1667″ gutter
- Select “Fit Guides to Margins”
- In the PAGES panel, select the hamburger menu (it’s 3 stacked lines on the top right corner of the panel), and DESELECT “Allow Document Pages to Shuffle”
- Add 2 more pages and reposition them so they look like below. You can reposition by clicking on the page and dragging it next to the page above it. This will allow you to see the same grid and explore the endless layouts that you can create.
- Using the following, create the DIFFERENT layouts based on the direction below:
- Content:
- Heading: Cobblestone Street

Body Copy: Use placeholder text (Go to TYPE > Fill in with Placeholder text)
- Use this photo by Prof. Giuliani of cobblestone
- Directions (Content must remain in its original proportion. Set your headline, body copy and do not crop image. Scale down all three in proportion to adhere to directions below):

Page 1: use 2 columns to place text / 6 modules to place picture, 2 columns to place heading

Page 2: use 1 columns to place text / 4 modules to place picture, 3 columns to place heading

Page 3: use 3 columns to place text / 1 column to place picture, 1 column to place heading

- Content:
- Save document as: LastName_FirstName_ TC_Grid
- Take a screen shot of the three pages with the guides on.
- Name it: Lastname_firstname_TC_Grid and place in Dropbox.
