Overview
Each week, you’ll be assigned either a letter of the alphabet or a number from 1-9, 0, and asked to photograph it, post it on OpenLab, and comment on a classmate’s findings.
At the end of the semester, you will be required to submit a Final PDF with all your images.
Instructions
Weekly (Post Example)
- First Week – Create a post on the OpenLab class site named “LastName_First Name_Found Alphabet”. You will edit this post each week to include new images.
- Select categories “Student Posts” and “Found Alphabet Typography Discussions”
- Add a GALLERY block, and two images into your post. Your images should be be named “LastName_FirstName_Letter”.
- Comment on a submission uploaded by another classmate. Do your best to comment on something that hasn’t be commented on a lot already and try to say something different than what has been said, if possible. Suggestions include:
- Are the pictured letters: Serif, Sans Serif, Old Style, Display, Modern or Transitional?
- Can you identify the Typeface that was used? You can upload the image to WhatTheFont (please note that this is not a super accurate tool).
- Comment on the typeface choice and usage. Example, do you typically see this typeface on packages for candy or store signs? Is it a typeface you see a lot or a little? Where?
- You can photograph letters and numbers whenever, but DO NOT POST AHEAD OF SCHEDULE.
Due At The End of Semester
- Create an InDesign document that looks like the example PDF
- Document Specs: 8.5″ x 11″, .5″ margins all-around, .5″ gutter.
