Activities

  • What Is a “Grid”— A grid is a system of vertical and horizontal guides used to organize a layout. They are a foundational element of design and can be seen in posters, web pages, etc.
  • Type Challenge — Following A Grid
  • Intro to Project 3— Posters Series and Social Media Posts
    • You will create a fictional art exhibit centered around the theme: Annoying!
    • You will design a series of posters (which will be the actual contents of the show) and Social Media Posts (which will advertise the exhibit). This is the last project for the semester, and will incorporate all the previously typographic information discussed in class (typeface selection, alignment, word spacing: tracking, kerning, line height: leading, color & typography, the grid, visual hierarchy, and basic motion). How are all these elements create a comprehensive design in a series?
    • PLEASE DO NOW IN CLASS:
      • Send me your text via email:
        • Choose something that annoys you: Loud chewing, slow walkers, talking at the movies, etc… This will be your subject matter. Come up with a title. This will be your headline. Then write a short paragraph (no more than 4 sentences) explaining why the thing you chose annoys you.
        • Example: LOUD CHEWING. “The sound of loud chewing irks me greatly. When I was a kid my mother often said, “Don’t chew like that, you sound like a goat.” I think about this phrase very often when I hear someone making loud noises while eating. —m.g.”
    • SETUP FOR HW:
      • Create a NEW InDesign Document for your posters.
        • 11″ x 14″
        • 2 pages, orientation vertical, NO facing pages
        • 3 Columns
        • .1667″ gutter
        • .5″ margins all around
      • Once document is open:
        •  Save it as Lastname_Firstname_posters_1
        • Select the A-Parent page
        • Select LAYOUT > CREATE GUIDES (in menu bar)
        • Add 12 rows, 8 columns
        • .1667″ gutter
        • Select “Fit Guides to Margins”
    • Homework Assignment:
      • Create moodboards.
        • Come up with 3 keywords you want to express with your design and create 3 moodboards (one for each keyword) of how you’re going to articulate your keyword in a design. If your 3 keywords are “moody”, “abrasive”, and “stark” show me design examples of how you want to use a moody color palette, what abrasive type looks like to you, and a stark layout.
        • Each moodboard show have 6 images of design.
        • BRING TO CLASS.
      • Begin to layout options for your posters.
        • Use type only
          • Exhibit Name: Annoying!
          • Your Title (for example “Loud Chewing”)
          • Your 4-sentence paragraph explaining your why your chosen subject matter annoys you.
        • TWO typefaces max (consider using families with extensive fonts)
        • Black and White ONLY
        • Strictly follow the grid
        • Emphasize your visual hierarchy
          • Emphasize contrast with scale (something must be BIG, something must be small), but do not take words out of their original proportion aka your body copy should look like a headline and vice versa.
        • Must consider and correctly apply what was previously covered in class: Type selection and variations, alignment, word and letter spacing, line height, expression, etc.
      • Save your InDesign File (package if using font that’s not from Adobe)
        • Take screenshots with the guides on the top 3 ones you like the most.
        • Name them: Lastname_Firstname_posters_1 (_2, _3, etc)
        • Place those in Dropbox
        • We will review it in class on Friday on screen, so please submit at least one layout for feedback!
