- You will be exposed to the creative and sometimes more playful aspect of type and lettering.
- What are the differences between creating lettering and using existing typefaces?
- How can we achieve a message with the use of a existing typeface or how we can in contrast, experiment with material and resources to create playful lettering.

- Project 2 material and assignments are are covered in classes 12 to 18
- This project contains multiple assignments:
- Expressive Word with Typeface (with process). From list provided, students will choose 4 words and express their meaning with Sans Serif Typeface and design elements such as scale, placement and character repetition or omission.
- Students learn how to interpret their sketches to then make better selections of typeface and software to use once moving into a digital environment.
- Lettering (favorite food)

Activities
- Type Challenge Tools (In-Class)
- Create a new document in Illustrator
- Go to FILE> NEW
- Create 2 artboards, each 3in x 3in inches squares
- Save document as : LastName_Firstname_Illustrator-Tools
- ARTBOARD 1
- Type the word: “building”, all lowercase
- Copy and paste a version outside of the artboard
- Create an Outline (Type > Create Outlines) using the version on the artboard and slightly move some anchor points using the Direct Selection tool.

- Type the word: “broken”, either all upper or lowercase
- Copy and paste a version outside of the artboard
- Create an Outline (Type > Create Outlines) using the version on the artboard.
- Ungroup the letterforms (Select Text > Option > Ungroup) and use miscellaneous shapes and the Pathfinder Tool (Window > Pathfinder) to divide parts of the letterform.

- Touch Type Tool
- Type the word: “broken”, either all upper or lowercase
- Choose a color palette
- Make letters color from your chosen palette. Pick 2 or 3 colors, don’t use more than 3.
- Export final as a JPG
- Name it: LastName_Firstname_Illustrator-Tools
- Upload to Dropbox
- Create a new document in Illustrator
- Drawing Letters (Homework)
- Pick a short phrase or music lyric (5-8 words).
- Download the Grids and pick one for your phrase/lyric.
- Note how all words are capitalized except when written in script.
- Draw TWO different layouts for the same short phrase.
- Each is on an 8.5 x 11 page (Don’t make letters too large. Use a sharp pencil. Use an eraser to correct mistakes.)
- Use a maximum of 3 of the different lettering styles below. Make sure they work together.
- Follow the set up of guides for each lettering style. Use your sketch book, ruler and eraser to draw a layout using the grid and letter styles. Pay attention to size, weight, style- make sure you are consistent with all your letters.
- Take a picture or scan sketches.
- Name it: LastName_Firstname_Handdrawn-Letters_1 and LastName_Firstname_Handdrawn-Letters_2
- Upload to Dropbox
