- Design & Typographic Continuity and Uniformity
Objectives
- A deeper look into continuity and uniformity in design
- Look at all the pages in your Project 1 Type Book. Make sure that all headings, labels, reflection notes have consistent styling in regards to typeface, size, style, and placement. This maintains a sense of uniformity and continuity and makes the book look like a unit.
- Paragraph Styles vs Character Styles

- Paragraph Styles vs Character Styles Demo (TAKE NOTES! Additional Video Resource)
- Paragraph Styles are format settings that utilize attributes from both the Paragraph and Character panels. They apply a set style to the ENTIRE paragraph or line of text.
- Character Styles are format settings that utilize attributes exclusively from the Character panel. They apply a set style to a specific word or letter within your text box.
- These tools help you maintain consistency with your type throughout your document. Use Page 15 of your typebook to help organize your type settings/ set you document type styles.
- Title/Cover Page (part of Project 1): This will not have a stand alone grade like previous assignments, but will be graded as part of Project 1.
- Open Project 1. On page 1 you will be title/cover page that includes the following:
- Name of your invention (title)
- “A typography primer featuring great inventions” (subtitle)
- By [Your First and Last Name Here] (byline)
- NOTE:
- Typography should be the main component. No illustrations, and minimal graphics, if at all.
- Black text only, gray OK.
- Open Project 1. On page 1 you will be title/cover page that includes the following:
- Project 1 Typebook Includes:
- Title Page (Page 1)
- Type Vocabulary (Page 2)
- Type Variations: Width/Weight/Posture (Pages 3, 4, 5)
- Tracking & Kerning: Word Space, Leading: Line Height (Pages 6 & 7)
- Alignment (Pages 8, 9)
- Type on a Path (Page 10, 11)
- Classification of Type & Pairing Typefaces (Pages 12, 13)
- Credits and Sources (Page 14)
- Include your name, typefaces used and source and credits for images.
- Project 1 Type Book Revisions:
- Go through your pages, make sure that they are ALL corrected as per comments and class lectures. It is your responsibility to also have a typographically correct book, and that ALL topics explained in class are taken into consideration. For example the Classification of Type and Pairing assignment, should have correct tracking and kerning, leading, alignment, etc.
- Additionally we are following a grid (5 column structure you setup at the beginning of the project). Items on your pages must align to it.
To-Do After Class
- Complete Title/Cover (Page 1) of Project 1 and continue edits to all pages.
- NO Dropbox submissions needed until the project is complete.
- Come to class with questions if you have any.
