Activities

  • Type On A Path Demo (In-Class)
    • Create new InDesign doc
      • 11″ x 8.5″
      • Landscape Orientation
      • .5″ margins all around
      • 1 page
    • Once the document is created:
      • Use the PEN tool to create:
        • a sharp-angled path
        • a curved path
      • Use the ELLIPSES FRAME tool (two tools below the PEN tool) to create a perfect circle (hold the shift key while dragging).
      • Go to the TYPE on a PATH tool, click on the sharp-angled path, and type in a sentence.
        • Change typeface and size, and see how type reacts to the path
        • Do the same thing with the curved path.
      • To type in a circle, refer to this guide created by M. Guiliani.
  • Converting an Image to Grayscale Demo (In-Class)
    • Open your image in PHOTOSHOP
    • Go to IMAGE > MODE > GRAYSCALE
    • PHOTOSHOP will ask if ok to Discard color information. Click “DISCARD
    • Save as a JPEG (FILE > SAVE AS > Set format to JPEG > SAVE

  • Graphic Assignment 5 (part of Project 1)If time, start during class.
    • Open Project 1. On pages 10 and 11, you will be using words related to your invention to create compositions that include type on path and type with image.
      • You must create a unique composition. Below are just examples and are not to be replicated exactly.
    • On page 10, you will create a composition that utilizes type in a circular path.
      • Using text related to your invention, create a composition in the first FOUR columns of your page. Include the words “Great Invention“.
      • Don’t forget to consider:
        • All spacing and layout issues discussed in class and adjust as necessary.
        • Typography elements discussed in previous classes: type selection, fonts/stylization, tracking, kerning, etc.
        • Your choice of caps & lowercase or all caps, or all lowercase.
      • In Column #5, type the heading “Type on a Path”.
    • On page 11, you will create a composition that utilizes both a curved or sharp angled path (choose depending on your image) AND a vertical path.
      • Using text related to your invention, create a composition in the first FOUR columns of your page. Use one of the images you brought into class.
      • In Column #5 type the heading : “Type on a Path”. Also, make sure to credit your image source per license.
  • Save your InDesign file, and export only pages 10 and 11 as a PDF:
    Lastname_Firstname_path
  • Place PDF file only in class Dropbox

  • Complete Graphic Assignment 5 (type on path). DUE 11PM, Thursday, 9/19
    • Save your InDesign File and create a PDF file (FILE> EXPORT> PDF)
    • ONLY export PAGES 10-11
