Class Info

  • Date: Friday, 9/13
  • Meeting Info: In-Person, Pearl 112

Topic

  • Type arrangement and legibility: Alignment
  • Flush or Align Left (FL/RR) /Flush or Align Right (FR/RL)
  • Center /Justify/Justify all lines (forced)

Objectives

  • Learn about type arrangement and legibility through alignment:
    • Flush or Align Left (FL/RR)
      • FL = Flush Left
      • RR = Ragged Right
    • Flush or Align Right (FR/RL)
      • FR = Flushed Right
      • RL = Ragged Left
    • Center
    • Justify
    • Justify all lines (Forced)
  • Understanding the different scenarios of their uses (See alignment PDF)
  • Continue learning InDesign interface
    • Where to find the paragraph panel and the paragraph alignment tool

Activities

  • Type Challenge Alignment Activity (In-Class)
    • Create new InDesign doc
      • 8.5″ × 11″
      • Landscape Orientation
      • 1″ margins all around
      • 3 columns, 0.3333″ gutters
      • 2 pages
      • Save your work: Last Name_First Name_ TC_alignment_Alice
    • On Page 1
      • Create a text box exactly the width and height of the column
      • Make sure your cursor is inside this column or that column is selected, then copy and paste the text in the next bullet point, into column 1. By default, the text will be Flush Left (FL).1
        • Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
          by Lewis Carroll

          CHAPTER I
          Down the Rabbit-Hole

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had no pictures or conversations in it, ‘and what is the use of a book,’ thought Alice ‘without pictures or conversation?’

So she was considering in her own mind (as well as she could, for the hot day made her feel very sleepy and stupid), whether the pleasure of making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
      • Copy and paste in the same text into column 2 and change alignment to align right (FR)
      • Copy and Paste in column 3 and change alignment to center
    • On Page 2
      • Go to column 1, paste text. Change alignment to justify with last line aligned left
      • Go to column 2, paste text. Change alignment to justify all lines.
      • In the last column, type your reflections (align left):
        • What do you notice happening on page 1, columns 1, 2, and 3?
          • Is any column easier or harder to read than another? Which one? Why do you think so?
        • What happens to the text on page 2, column 2?
        • What are the differences on page 2 between the text in column 1 and column 2?
    • Save your InDesign file, and export a PDF:
      Last Name_First_ TC_alignment_Alice
    • Place PDF file only in Dropbox

  • Graphic Assignment 4 (part of Project 1)If time, start during class.
    • Open Project 1. On pages 8 and 9, you will be using the short narrative (no more than 4 sentences) of your selected invention.
      • You must utilize what you know about type variations, italics, and bolds to emphasize parts of your text.
    • On page 8, you will explore FL, CENTERED, FR alignments
      • Copy and paste your paragraph into columns 1, 2, 3. Column 4 will be blank and column 5 is where you’ll type the title of the exercise (Alignment) in the top right corner.
        • Align the following way:
          • 1st column = flushed left
          • 2nd column = centered
          • 3rd column = flushed right
        • Format your text using a Serif or Sans Serif typeface. Do not use display or scripts. Your text should not be larger than 12 pt.
        • Mark each column with the alignment heading (can rotate as shown in the example, if necessary) and place an arrow indicating alignment.
          • Use the existing columns and guides or create new guides to align your arrows and type within your layout.
    • On page 9, you will explore Justified and Forced Justified
      • Divide your page in 4 main squares. Use the same paragraph about your invention that you used from page 8 to complete the following:
        • In the Top Left Square: Copy, paste, and format your paragraph to have a forced-justified alignment. Keep the same typeface and type size as page 8.
        • In the Top Right Square: Type “Forced Justification can cause very odd spacing between words and letters.” Use a different typeface and type size than your paragraph. I suggest whatever you’ve used previously to write your reflections.
        • In the Bottom Left Square: Type “If you must justify the text, regular justification might be a better option.” Use the same type stylization (typeface, font, size, etc) as you did in Top Right Square.
        • In Bottom Right Square: Copy, paste, and format your paragraph to have a regular justification alignment. Do not force.
    • Save your InDesign file, and export only pages 8 and 9 as a PDF:
      Lastname_Firstname_alignment
    • Place PDF file only in class Dropbox
