Activities
- Play KERNTYPE Letter Spacing Game
- Type Challenge – Tracking and Kerning
- Graphic Assignment 3 (part of Project 1): If time, start during class.
- Open Project 1. On Page 6, you’ll:
- Choose a word related to your invention, and type it 5 times
- Select a classic Serif or Sans Serif (no display, scripts or novelty typefaces), apply it to your 5 words, and format according to the specs below. Once complete, add the followings headings:
- Typeface/ 36 pts/ all caps/ No tracking
- Typeface/ 36 pts/ all caps/ -50 tracking
- Typeface/ 36 pts/ all caps/ 50 tracking
- Typeface/ 36 pts/ all caps/ 100 tracking
- Typeface/ 36 pts/ all caps/ 200 tracking
- Reflection:
- In column 5, write the phrases: “What happens to type when there is too much or too little space between words and letters?” Then answer the following: What do you see? Where did you have to make adjustments?
- See this PDF for example and layout details
- Open Project 1. On Page 6, you’ll:
- On Page 7:
- Divide the page into 4 squares, copy the paragraph you wrote about your invention in Class 2, and paste it FOUR times—once in each square.
- Format each paragraph so that the type is all Sans Serif (you choose) and the same point size (11 pt).
- Continue to format each paragraph based on the specs below. Once complete, add the followings headings in a separate text box than actual paragraph. Remember to use variations in type to emphasize the text where needed:
- Top left square: Typeface/11pt. size/14 leading
- Top right square: Typeface/11pt. size/18 leading
- Bottom left square: Typeface/11pt. size/24 leading
- Bottom right square: Typeface/11pt. size/36 leading
- As the leading gets larger it is possible that your text will not fit. THAT is OK– it proves a point.
- Reflection:
- In column 5, answer which one reads better and why.
