1984

The story of 1984 is an interesting piece of writing circling around the idea of a totalitarian government. A totalitarian government is a when they want to control everyone’s thoughts, feelings, and control every aspect of your life. The setting of the story is in London a depressed, broken down and dirty version of London, where the government “Big Brother” is constantly watching the citizens and ensuring power over everyone. One form is of this is the “Thought Police” who is one form of surveillance in the book and have hidden cameras and microphones all over to over hear everyone’s conversations in case some one said something against Big Brother. Our protagonist is Winston Smith who is a character who slowly develops a rebellion against Big Brother, the rebellion starts slow, but grow to out of control manners. First with a constant watch over them by Big Brother and the Thought Police, it was a difficult mission and ends up finding out a worker named Julia is the same as him, when she slips him a note saying, “I LOVE YOU.” Winston decides to make a movie and they end up being in a love affair and rent a hidden space in a secret location with no telescreen, no microphones, nothing, but a space of their own. Eventually this trues leading to a horrible end where, he visits O’Brain and believe he to be a member of the rebellion against the party as well, but is proven wrong and take to the Ministry of Love and is tortured to horrible extends. Winton is broken by the government and betrays Julia’s love but sending his torture to her. The governments ends up winning at the end of the book, and i find it was a interesting end where the antoganist wins over the protagonist and this totalitarian government stays as the world’s past, present and future. WAR IS PEACE…FREEDOM IS SLAVERY….IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH.

The Set Up

When i was introduced to the film The Set up i expected this basic Noir film with some mystery and wonder, but The Set Up did something beyond your basic Noir. It was able to portray this feeling of Action pack Mystery and deliver an all around effective film. The character Stoker Thompson is a middle aged boxer who from the film states been on a losing streak and was way pasted his limit already. The director used camera aiming to a great advantage and dialog between the characters to give off that dark feeling of Noir. For Example when Stoker first enters the area the crowd is roaring and yelling for the current fighter to destroy one another, switch from groups of people to a close up on individuals. The noise in that scene allow creates this feeling, that seems to make Stoker see everything in a different perspective, and overall gave us a feeling of what it would be like in that scene, sitting in the stand with those people.

Not only does the camera play an important role, but the characters the movie seems to circle around in the fight scene between stoker and Little Boy. There’s the silent couple, the fat guy who eats everything, the family of little boy, managers, the blind man, the women who loves fights and the guy multitasking with the radio. I find a lot of these characters very interesting and there role in the movie is even more interesting. The gentlemen with the radio, i feel if you listen to the radio while the fight is going on its almost describing the fight, but in different terms and the women who loves fighting, is on any ones side as long as they keep the fight going. But more importantly what each of these characters say give off the sense of Noir, for example, “Make him fight” the women who loves fighting, “Close his eye” from the blind man. Just very powerful lines that increases tension in the moment of fighting.

Lastly is the actually only true scene of the film when stoker is about to get beaten. The cornering of him when he was at that gate the shadows approaching him and once he started getting beaten the camera turns to the shadow of the drumming banging the drums. The beating starts to pick up and gets louder almost resembling the beating and yelling he would be doing. Overall a get scene and Noir film.

Murder My Sweet…

Murder My Sweet is a Noir film circled around another private eye named Philip Marlowe, who encounters a case about this Jade necklace little did he know it was all a set up job, and not a pretty one to be involved in. In his words he’s going to be stepping into a “Black Pool”. I really enjoyed the cunning personality bought by Mr. Marlowe and his sense of humor as well, reminded me of Samuel Spade for The Maltese Falcon. Both character swing side to side on how they play the game, and who there’re playing it for. The characters are strong in will and know how to “talk the talk” when it comes to getting information. Of course both men ended up having the obstacle known that the femme fatale, but both over came them and executed justice.

Throughout the film Marlowe brings up this expression of a “black pool” he steps into whenever he gets knockout. To seems to me this black pool is almost like a dream he enters, or rather nightmare because when is entered into the psych ward we seem to envision what exactly happens during that time.I thought it was an interesting moment to included in the film, almost like he replays the moments were tension and fear are the highest for details. Still one thing i did enjoy more from this film rather then other Noir films we’ve seen in class is the fact there are not open questions. The case is closed and everyone gets there final justice, the hero remains alive and ends up reliving true feelings towards the end of the film for Mr. Grayle’s daughter and ends up with her as well. All in all i thought it was a great film and it was nice to revisit the characteristics of Samuel Spade.

Double Indemnity

The story and film of Double Indemnity circle around the proclaimed protagonist of Walter Nuff, who is an insurance sales man and little did he know his life would change once he met Phyllis. Phyllis is portrayed as the femme fatale towards Nuff and both of them come to the conclusion of killing her husband by making it look like an accident, but with Nuff’s knowledge he knows the best way to gain more for their dirty deed. The book and the film both have a different way of telling the story, such as the death of Phyllis and how Nuff got shot for example. The Noir film describes an intense story between emotion and fear of getting caught. The femme fatale played a huge role to the influence of Huff because of her beauty he was blinded in making the right decision on what is good. The conclusion due to the femme fatale, holds Nuff to the despair end of no women, no luck and no life in the film, and leaves the viewers thinking he’s on the blink of death. Still in the book his end, is Keyes his friend in the company or the justice in the story, decides to let Huff live with what he did and send him off in a ship with Phyllis.

Compared to The Maltese Falcon, they both do portray the Femme Fatale as a strong influence to the protagonist and they both give off this tension of what could possibly happen next. I believe both gave off the perfect sense of a Noir Film and both were highly up on the interest.

The Maltese Falcon

The Maltese Falcon is one of the first ever Black and White films i may have ever seen. Truth be told, it was a great film. The film introduces what seems to be two protagonists in the beginning of the film, detectives, Samuel Spade and Miles Archer. The story of betrayal begins when a women enters their offices and gives them a case, leading to the death of his partner and she is later revealed to be key element in the film and shows off the most secrecy in character in my opinion.

We circle around the main character of the film Samuel Spade the detective, who is very hard to pin point in the film. The character is very good at what he does and is a strong, and smart minded man. In a few words, “He knows how to play the game.” When it comes to the female character who was introduced in the beginning Brigid, their relationship is just as confusion as her mind, and trust. She gives of this persona of a very sweet, well mannered women, almost a damsel in distress. Still Spade is able to see right through her and plays her just as well. There is also a very comical feeling when ever the character of Gutman’s right hand man, the low leveled gun man compared to Spade. Through out the film he is easily out smarted by Spade at every corner and pokes at his short tempered mind at every given opportunity. Then there are the policemen who seem to want to convict Spade for the death of his partner, Spade easily due to experiences seems to know how to juggle them around so there not in the way of this investigation.

The Noir film of The Maltese Falcon is a great film and i would 100% recommend it to others. I enjoy the characters and all the diverse personalities each gave to the audience. It was truly a wonderful story of betrayal from every character, and always kept you thinking on who is telling the truth. The story line played well, and there wasn’t a scene where i wanted it to pass. All and all this was a great film to begin with hope the rest are just as great.
