The area I chose was in my neighborhood, which is in Brooklyn, New York. There’s many restaurants in my vicinity. There’s a few 99 cent stores, a Walgreen, Rite Aid, deli and grocery stores like Heights food, Aunt Butchie’s(desserts), Chinese food restaurants, pizzerias. Even though there’s a lot of restaurants and stores, not all trash cans are full. Resident’s garbage gets picked up twice every week, Mondays and Thursdays. The corner garbage cans gets picked up 6 times a week, so the garbage cans aren’t always full. I don’t see any signs of rodent activity. When I’m out at night, I never see any rats. I think it’s because the garbage gets picked up often, so there isn’t much that attract rodents. This does concern me. Even though there isn’t any rodent activity, at least that I know of, I’m afraid that rodent activity will occur. If the garbage gets picked up a lot, like always, then I think rodents won’t be a problem. I can’t really compare this to the first assignment because there isn’t any rodent activity in my locality. Maybe there is in certain parts, but from I pass by, and checked, there wasn’t any.

In between four city blocks i counted 14 restuarants. I dont see rats around on the street, but i see squirrels everywhere and sometimes i even find dead ones on the floor.

Assignment 2: Brittany

The area I choose was Staten Island. I live around the mall area which there is a lot of restaurants.  Also there are a lot of houses, supermarkets, and stores. Some of these garbage’s are from my complex. We get our garbage picked up Monday morning and Thursday morning.  Also we have recycle picked up on Wednesdays. If there a lot of garbage in your area you must contact the garbage men about it, if not you get a warning. After that you would get a fine.  But some of the streets around me you do see garbage lying around since people do litter. But mostly that is around the mall and roads. The other pictures are close to my job. I work at a supermarket. Each garbage area I went to there weren’t any sign of rodents there.  It might happen later at night around the restaurants. Compare to the first assignment it is a bigger difference than my area because you rarely see any rodents running around. You sometimes see possum or raccoon’s but not rats. This doesn’t really concern me because I wouldn’t be so happy to see rats running around my house a lot.

Assignment #2 -My Local Environment.

My area of choice is my neighborhood where I live. I live in South Ozone Park, Queens. My area is cleaner than most, although it could be better in certain areas. Most of waste products aren’t caused by restaurants in the area, but rather by kids who attend Middle School 226 and Public School 100. Kids litter the streets with milk cartons and other identifiable cafeteria garbage. But as stated before, the litter is hardly noticeable. Other sources of litter are a few pizzeria’s that are in the area. There aren’t that many restaurants around here. I don’t see any signs of rodent activity in this area. But who knows, maybe I wasn’t looking at the right place at the right time. The area described in the First Assignment is hard to compare with that the area in which I live in. This is due to the differences in the population size, and the types of buildings found in these areas. The Upper East Side differs greatly in comparison to my neighborhood. There aren’t nearly as many apartment buildings, or restaurants as there are in the Upper East Side.

Unfortunately, 1 picture of a trashcan and 1 picture of a pizzeria were deleted by accident. RIP those 2 pictures 🙁 … Also, garbage was collected earlier in the day.

These photos are were I throw away my garbage and also pictures of 4 blocks away from my house in corona, Queens New York and they are a trash bins for plastics, cans, anything other than that goes separate, bigger items go outside the trash bin so that when they come to pick up its easier, The garbage men pick it up every 3 days and if you violate the rules you will get a fine that’s one of the reasons its so organized in my neighborhood. In total there are 3 different bins. Honestly to my surprise there has not yet been any sign of rodents around the trash or my house, since I moved in 4 years ago, Its different than where I use to live where they’re a lot of rodents. Another method my apartment building has is when it gets to full we tie up the garbage bag so stop people from dumping anymore garbage and therefore let them use the other bin they are two bins for each item such as two bins for plastics, two bins for cans, metals and two bins for the other garbage. I believe if people take on this method maybe the rodent population wouldn’t be a problem like it was in the article “Rats Mob The Upper East side”  if they can’t find food how would they survive they will eventually die and yes I understand they’re bodies don’t decompose as you can see in the Decomposition study but eventually the maggots get to them or Humans can get rid of them on their own.

Assignment 2: My Environment Kimberly Bush

The neighborhood that I live in is Clinton Hill in Brooklyn, New York. I was surprised that there were not very many garbage cans in my neighborhood, and when I actually found a garbage can it was either half way filled or almost empty. The garbage cans here are not very full, and I am guessing this is so because there are many cafes and restaurants in the neighborhood so people probably throw their trash in the garbage inside of the restaurant. I did find a lot of piles of garbage on the street from those local restaurants which may explain why the garbage cans were so empty.I did not see any rodent activity around my neighborhood and I did not expect it since there was very little garbage in the cans. This does not concern me because I have no problem with there being no rodent activity and I hope it continues to stay this way. I would not compare my environment with the article in the first assignment because it is the complete opposite. In the first article there were a lot of rats in the environment, where in my environment there are close to none.  photophoto (1)photo (2)photo (3)photo (4)photo (5)photo (6)photo (7)

Brandy Severino

I reside in 145th st, manhattan. A major avenue that passes by my neighborhood is Broadway Ave. Which if one were to walk by it you’ll notice the various stores that spread across it. Various establishments such as McDonalds, RiteAid, Subway, and others such as convenience stores are adorned with city garbage cans. This cans are usually filled to the top with trash such as plastic bags, papers or left overs from the customers that stroll through the area, but despite this the cans are quickly attended to and emptied. One would think the stores are the major sources of garbage in the neighborhood but that is not the case for it is the buildings that often produce the most waste. Since they produce the most waste you would just need to pay close attention to some rodents that run through some buildings. I myself am not concerned with this since it is not such an outstanding number of rodents such as the one from the previous assignment also landlords are constantly battling the rodents with raticide. Thanks to the constant attention given by landlords and stores and establishments along with the city one doesnt have to worry so much about the rodent problems and instead just deal with the smell that some of these garbage cans and piles of trash give off.

Tiffany Rose : My Local Environment

I live in Brooklyn, Ny and I work in the city. There aren’t many garbage cans around my house but I did find random piles of garbage outside of corner stores. The garbage cans around my job we’re pretty decent but of course the only garbage can I found around my house was gross. To be honest, I am surprise there aren’t many trash cans around me. This is weird because two stops away from me have garbage cans on every other corner. The sources of garbage around my house are mostly from the stores. There is literally a corner store on every corner. It would defeat the purpose if there wasn’t. The sources of garbage by my job are clearly from random people. It is not as messy as it is in Brooklyn. I do not see any rodent activity signs around my house and it doesn’t concern me. Im relieved that there aren’t rodent activity. My environment is the complete opposite from that of the first article. The worse I’ve seen around my house is a sick cat. Hopefully it’ll stayphoto 2

Chris lives here

20131110_145223[1]2] My local environment is filled with garbage cans. I live in the Bronx around the 6 line. There’s a city garbage can in every bus stop and for some reason its always filled. The area is around where I live, but this is no where near my job. The waste sources around my environment is those green NYC garbage cans that say “keep new york city clean” you can barely see that saying because those cans are really old and as time passes it fades away, making the can rusty and dirty. I honestly do not think there is any rodent activity because its the bus route and there’s always people around. This does not concern me as much as the smell does. I don’t think I can compare my environment with the first lab assignment because, well like I said there is no rodent activity around these trash cans.
