Assignment 1: The Body -The Machine

Visit https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/radiolab/articles/unraveling-bolero and listen to the downloadable podcast. Our class will conclude with the study of the Nervous System. At this point, I want you to approach the idea of the nervous system from a naive standpoint. Write a short essay by leaving a reply below. This should cover the following items:

  1. Describe where you feel inspiration comes from (does not need to be anatomical or physiological). Compare the experiences of Ravel and Anne and indicate if you feel the diseases had anything to do with inspiration.
  2. In your own words, describe the differences between the mind and body. Utilize the specific examples from the story of Anne and Ravel.
  3. What does the story reveal to you regarding the anatomical nature of the brain? Utilize the specific losses of function that were featured. Do you feel that Ann and Ravel overcame the degeneration of their anatomy by channeling the remaining functions towards the creative/repetitive? Is the body just a simple machine as evidenced by the default behavior of the body upon damage?
  4. What effect does listening to this story have on you? As a student of this course, there are things you may or may not want to learn. Does this story change your frame of mind in approaching the course material? Utilize the ideas of symmetry in the story.

This assignment is due September 29th. Grading is dependent on appropriately covering the prompts outlined above. Grammar and Spelling will make up a small portion of the grade because excessively poor grammar and spelling becomes uncommunicative. If you are shy about posting to the public immediately, you may send me a draft prior to posting for me to edit.
