What is SEEK?

SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge) and College Discovery are the educational opportunity programs of The City University of New York. College Discovery operates at the University’s community colleges. SEEK provides access to CUNY’s senior colleges under non-traditional admissions criteria for talented and motivated high school graduates who need academic, counseling, and financial support to succeed.

Through the years, SEEK has stimulated the development of innovative academic, counseling, and financial aid services throughout CUNY. Today, SEEK continues its mission to enhance educational and economic opportunities for as many young people as possible.

Our Mission

The Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK program at New York City College of Technology recognizes the potential in every student, regardless of his or her educational and economic background. Our program introduces students to the culture of higher education and provides services and resources intended to help students envision themselves as successful student learners.

The mission of the SEEK program is to:

  • Provide students with the tools they need to create their own success
  • Empower students to assume greater responsibility for their learning and their lives
  • Enhance students’ awareness of themselves
  • Foster among students a sense of identity and community within the SEEK program and the college at large.

We believe that through the partnership formed by the students’ hard work and our program’s support, students will become active, engaged learners who graduate from college and pursue fulfilling, productive, and healthy

History

Created through the efforts of social activists and progressive politicians in the 1960’s, SEEK was the first program of its sort in the United States, becoming a model for higher education opportunity programs nationwide. Comparable programs such as EOP and HEOP were eventually implemented by SUNY and private colleges, respectively
