You can find tips on writing poetry from the former US poet laureate Billy Collins and are published on the ubiquitous MasterClass website. I am listing these below because they are helpful. You do NOT have to buy the course to read this article.
Among the sources he mentions in his class is John Ciardi, whose lecture “How Does a Poem Mean” is below. It’s a long lecture (almost an hour) and dated, but well worth your while if you are interested in thinking about the “what” and “how” of poetry.
