“What is Flash Fiction”-Reedsy

This  exploration of this form–“What is Flash Fiction” from  the popular website Reedsy–offers a concise explanation of the different types of categories of flash fiction using word lengths:

  1. Flash fiction: Max 1500 words.
  2. Sudden fiction: Max 750 words.
  3. Drabble, or microfiction: Max 100 words.
  4. Dribble, or minisaga: Max 50 words.
  5. Twitterature: Max 280 characters.
  6. Six-word story: Any story with a single-digit word count is a category unto itself.

Scroll down the rather busy page to find “rules” for writing flash fiction, such as: Do Tell a Story; Do Not Tell Too Much, and Do Write with the Form in Mind.

Like our other resource from Fiction Southeast, this reading offers important elements of flash fiction.  Here, characteristics of the form are defined as:

  • Intense prose,
  • Attentive language,
  • A shining narrative voice,
  • A powerful, central image, and
  • The amplest meaning in the fewest words.

(Note: Your future Fiction Assignment will include the option of writing a series of Flash Fiction, so take note!)
