Junot Diaz: Literature is the Closest Thing We Have to Telepathy

In this video, the writer Junot Diaz discusses how fiction enables us to connect with characters and expand our own understanding of why others do and act and say the things they might do. Halfway through this video, Diaz, a fiction writer, calls this a moment of “telepathy” or “inhabiting other people’s minds.” This is interesting because while many have researched the effect of literature as a source of deepening one’s empathy, this writer who experiences other characters in the creative process, describes this as “telepathy.”
