Junot Diaz, “How to Date a Brown Girl”

Junot Diaz published this story in the New Yorker. It was part of his short story collection, Drown. Diaz went on to win the Pulitzer Prize with his novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao.

Diaz first published this story in 1995. What rings true as you read this now? How could you write your own story in response? Notice also that the narrator wants the reputation of being someone who dates lots of girls. We get no evidence that he actually dates them. Read as writer–look for how the character is developed.

How To Date A Brown Girl (black girl, white girl, or halfie) | The New Yorker

Junot Diaz teaches writing at MIT. If you like his work, you might want to read what he asks his students to read in his creative writing syllabus.
