This illustration is drawn by Japanese manga artist Hajime Isayama who is the creator of one of the best-selling manga series, Attack on Titan. I decided to choose this artist because he illustrated one of my favorite mangas and I know he uses a lot of value in his drawings. In a lot of Isayama’s art, he uses a lot of expressive lines to convey emotion and movement. In terms of value, he uses a lot of cross-hatching while using grayscale undertones below the cross-hatching to give characters depth.

Isayama draws traditionally with an inking pen on thick paper. The compositional technique he uses is movement. In the image, he is showing movement by using cross-hatching to express how violently the titan is moving and showing the people falling down. I consider this effective because it is giving the drawing more detail and intensity.
