“Strong Medicine” by William Villalongo

Medium: cut velour on matte board

This piece of artwork caught my attention because I thought was a pine tree when I first saw it. But when I look up closer I saw the snake show up in the pile of tree branches(?) when the bird pick up one of them. It symbolizes whenever you do something, someone might be watching you in the dark.  The raised hand might show surrender because you never know  how many of them is in the dark since you can’t see them. The feeling that I have after I took a closer look on it was when you are in a dangerous situation, the  only way to be safer is to surrender.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 4

From this project, I learn how to use the gouache paint. It was hard for me to use the paint because it is my first time painting with gouache paint. The color didn’t come out as I wanted when it dried. What I can do better next time is to spend more time testing the color when it is wet and when it is dry. However the digital one we use photoshop to make was fun, it come out pretty similar to the original one.

Midterm Grade

Throughout the three projects that we have already done, I learn different things and vocabulary. On the first project, I learn about the difference between stable and ambiguous. While one is stand out and one is hard to tell which is the object and which is the ground. Next time if we are doing similar project, I will choose something interesting and  easy to cut out because I had chose the gum on the floor as one of my artifact.

On the second project, the Sound Visualization, I learn how to use photoshop to make gif or video.I have a bit of hard time on the beginning with the program because it is my first time making a video. I will position my piece more on a pattern than just randomly jumping across the screen.

On the one that we are working on right now, I learned about the difference of high key and low key, broad and narrow, and how we can use an black and white portrait of ourself can make some different kind of art piece. What I can do better will be my painting of my broad piece because it is my first time using the gouache paint and I couldn’t mix to the color I want or when the paint is dry, the color show up more darker than I wanted.

My high key image is the light reflecting on the tile.  Since the tile is glossy, the light on top reflect on the tile, and creating a gradient like highlight on the floor.

My low key image was the room next door, it was a glass,see-through room. The room was dark because the curtains are down. But light from the outside escape through the gaps of the curtains of one window to the other. Since it is a see through room, the outer layer is glass, so it reflect what is on the outside of the hallway.

Sound Visualization: Phase 4

I spend a lot of time on this project because it is my first time trying to make  a gif or video on photoshop. It took me a long time to figure out how to use the program and layers. My animation had up to 23 layers and I have to spend time on all the layers and do them one by one, took up a long time. In this project, I learn how to use the timeline in photoshop to make a video. If we are doing something similar next time, I think I will do a better job on how I position my pieces and make them fancier and spend a little more time on it.
