Title: Strong Medicine
Artist: William Villalongo
Medium: Cut velour paper on matte board

This particular work reminded me of the Value-Added Portraits Project we did in class. The artist, William Villalongo, used leaves, tree branches, and other material to create a face and a bird. Looking at the composition in person for a while it made me feel that there is movement because of the hands being above and waving them in the air. I thought it was a cartoonish figure making a silly face, however, the artist describes the figure’s raised hands evoking the Black Live Matter movement.

Our band name is Spicy Crush, I wanted the blocks to be chromatic grey, the background to have a pure color, and the letters to be muted. ShanShan and I could not decide which one was best for us because they both looked similar but different order in saturation and ShanShan wanted to change hers again.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 4

Throughout this project, it was fun and creative, this is because we created a different image of ourselves and no one could possibly think it came from our portrait. I learned how to use gouache paint. This was a challenging part for me, the color that I wanted to get,  it did not look similar to the original image. I would retry painting my broad image over and over again. The narrow composition was easy to convert it to Photoshop. What I learned from this project, that could be helpful in the next, is using gouache paint and the amount of color being used.

Midterm Grade Post

Throughout the semester, the projects that I have done were interesting and challenging. The first project we did was the Urban Artifacts, I did not get the idea of taking pictures of objects on the street and make it into art, however we did. Throughout each phase, I learned how to create an obvious and ambiguous figure ground relationship and using Photoshop to make a stable and unstable figure ground. What I would do differently, have different objects and recreate the ambiguous composition and make it more chaotic.

The second project was Sound Visualization, I learned how to create a video, animating, and adding sound in Photoshop, it was pretty difficult because it was my first time and I did not know what part of the song I wanted in the video. During this project, I would retry doing the animation again, I feel like it could have been better, and getting each part of the layer in the right place.

In the current project we are working on, Value-Added Portraits, what I learn is making a collage of a portrait in a high key and low key composition. I thought it was really interesting making a collage that was narrow because my photo did not appear anything like my portrait and i had a different perspective. What I would recreate again is my painting, Currently, it is challenging me, because it is hard for me getting the right colors to match the original Broad Range collage.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 1

The first picture, is define as a low key composition, it was taken place in the stairways, I decided that the picture would be darker with the focus on my camera. As well the focal point of the image is the light bar. The second picture was also taken by the stairs, except it was bright because of the window. This picture is high key, there is barley any darkness, as well light is being taken over.

Sound Visualization: Phase 4

This was a difficult project for me because it was my first time making a video in Photoshop. I had difficulty making thumbnails for staccato and legato pattern but then knew what the meaning was and saw examples. The position on the layers was tricky in Photoshop because I did not know where and what to place them to go along with the music. I think if I knew more about making a video in Photoshop and the illustration, I would have done a good job at it. For the next project, if we do video in Photoshop, I know how to use it and also look up at other projects people have made doing this technique.
