Sound Visualization : Phase 4

This project has truly helped me a lot in my understanding of Staccato and Legato sounds and shapes. Coming into this project, I had no clue what these terms meant. Class discussion and classwork helped me to start to understand what these terms meant. I found myself mixing up the two terms after the first class on Sound Visualization. After the second class, I did completely understand these two terms. This project also helped my analyze sound more carefully. I realized there was a lot more going on than when I usually listened to music. These lessons helped me clearly identity whether a certain sound or instrument was staccato or segato. Due to my previous experience with Photoshop, animating my composition wasn’t much of a difficult task. It did take a lot of my time though. I thoroughly enjoyed what this project had to offer and had fun animating my drawings to visualize these terms.

Animated Mashup

This project took up a lot of my time because I had to add a lot of keyframes. I had previous experience using the Photoshop timeline so this wasn’t too difficult for me. I tried to go for a sound visualizer in the Staccato part of the project. For the Legato part, I tried to go for a smooth type of feeling as it fades in and out. Should I change anything?

Sound Visualization : Phase 1

The song starts of with faint drum sounds and a muffled guitar. It slowly starts getting louder and then he starts singing. To me it sounds like a kind of raspy rough voice. It continues for a while until it starts sounding muffled or as if it’s underwater and then you can only hear the beat of the song. The way I imagined this if they were lines or shapes would be with a kind of rough thump that continuously occurs. The thump would be a rectangle shape the increases and decreases in size.

I also see a very sharp line increasing and decreasing in size as the clapping or drum sounds occur. I continue to imagine this as he starts singing but later on when the song sounds muffled, I picture the thumps and sharp lines starting to get very wavy but still preserving their rough texture. The song is very repetitive and I picture that throughout the song. I would also picture the lines and shapes moving up and down to the rhythm of the song.

Urban Artifacts: Phase 4

This project helped greatly in my understanding of ambiguous and obvious work. Coming into this project, I didn’t know what ambiguous meant and now that I’ve finished this project, I can say this it was very great in helping my knowledge of it.  During phase one, I was still a bit confused about these terms. Going into phase two, I was able to experiment with Photoshop and further my knowledge of the project. I also learned by experimenting how I could work with positive and negative space to create the image I’m aiming for in a ambiguous or obvious composition.  The class discussion also helped greatly because I could see through the minds of others when looking at each other’s work. Overall I would say I have a lot of understanding of ambiguous and obvious figures than when I first started this project.

This phase of the project required a lot more work in my opinion because you had to be precise with the tracing and inking, which took very long for me. Comparing this phase and the last phase, I would say both helped me further my understanding of ambiguous and stable work since I spent hours inking and seeing how the objects were composed. On the other hand, filling it in with ink was very different than from working on photoshop. In photoshop I was able to work quicker but now that I had to spend time inking it, I was able to study more of it.

When you walk in New York City, litter can be found in every direction possible. Everyday people go throughout their day and their trash ends up on the floor. Every piece of litter has it’s own story as to how it got there. How did the lollipop stick end up there? Perhaps it was a child who had finished his last taste of his sweet, or perhaps it was a grownup who was craving something sweet at the time.  The cigarette was discarded in the middle of the sidewalk, who did it belong to? What was their personality like? The sticker perhaps was from a clothing item that someone had just bought. Maybe they had been saving up their money and waiting until they had enough to finally be able to buy the expensive jacket they wanted. Every piece of litter has it’s own personality, the story of the person that left it behind.
