Feb 2, t     Discussion of course, syllabus, and texts; Introductions; Homework for Thurs: Read Asimov + questions

Feb 4, r      Orientation–OpenLab; freewriting; HW for Feb 11: Read/print Scibona, and Brody; then complete Journal 1 worksheet

 

Week 2: Education and Intellectual Homes

Feb 9, t      No Class (classes follow a Friday schedule)

Feb 11, r     Due: Journal 1. Freewrite; Essay 1 explained. Discuss readings; HW for Feb 16: read Gardner and Wallis/Steptoe essays in Dwell and write Journal 2: 250 words (typed) on favorite article so far

 

Week 3: Home

Feb 16, t     Due: Journal 2. Freewrite. Discuss elements and essay format. HW for Wed: Read essays by Santiago and Rahmani; prep for Quiz 1 over readings

Feb 18, r     Due: Quiz 1–in class, over readings. Freewrite. Discuss revision and editing (quotations). HW: Draft of Essay 1 due Feb 23 and read Powell, and Lubrano

 

Week 4: The Photo Essay

Feb 23, t     Due: Draft of Essay 1—peer review workshop. Freewrite and discussion over essay 1 elements

Feb 25, r     Due: Final Draft of Essay 1. Discuss how we read the city and see the city; What is a photograph? Barthes on Studium and Punctum; HW: Read Abbott, Hine, Nooney then write Journal 3

 

Week 5: Describing Photos

Mar 1, t       Due: Journal 3. Discuss readings and the role of photography in culture; reality vs. image; HW: TBA

Mar 3, r       Discuss Essay 2: narrating physical and moral views (facts and feelings) of NYC; Discuss photos and readings. HW: read Sontag selection on OpenLab; Write Journal 4

 

Week 6: Writing a Comparison Essay

Mar 8, t      Journal 4 Due; discuss readings; revision techniques and quotations. HW: Study for Quiz 2

Mar 10, r     Quiz 2; Freewrite. Discuss ways of seeing and narrating the city; HW: read Parlá & Anastasio

 

Week 7: Writing a Comparison Essay

Mar 15, t     Freewrite; Discuss Anastasio, photography, and reading images. HW: Journal 5

Mar 17, r     Due: Journal 5; Review for Midterm; HW-study for Midterm

 

Week 8: Structure: Revision and Techniques of Good Writing

Mar 22, t      Midterm Exam; HW: write draft of Essay 2 and bring to class for peer review

Mar 24, r      Due: Draft of Essay 2 for Peer Review; HW—revise essay 2

 

Week 9: Beginning the Research Essay

Mar 29, t       Revision and editing and proofing; HW: Bring revised final draft of essay 2 to class on Wednesday.

Week 10: Beginning the Research Essay

April 5, t      Discuss Essay 3 and Research; HW- Read Deak and Egan and write Journal 5

Week 11: Place-Based Research

Apr 12, t       Question and Answer. Student Samples. HW: Journal 6 (5 questions)

Apr 14, r      Due: Journal 5: Topic Summary and 5 key questions and answers. Typed and double-spaced. 

 

Week 12: Writing about NYC: The Research Paper

Apr 19, t      Library Instruction Day: Meet in front of the Library. Homework: work on draft of complete Annotated Bibiography.

Apr 21, r      Peer Review of Annotated Bibliography.
