Week 1, Feb 3:

Course Introduction; Questions about globalization, transnationalism, and homesickness; brief example of transnational literature; How do we read? HW: readings-Doctorow, Freudenberger, and Steger-OpenLab; HW: Journal 1 (250-300 words on favorite of the two stories).

 

Week 2, Feb 10:

Collect Journal 1. Concepts: reading for understanding; terms defined: globalization, nationalism, transnationalism, in-class writing, discuss Doctorow, Freudenberger, and Steger; HW: reading Steger and Jin and Desai-OpenLab; write Journal 2

 

Week 3, Feb 17

Collect Journal 2. Lecture on globalization, types of homesickness, and ethics; also begin defining colonialism/postcolonialism. HW: Begin reading Interpreter of Maladies (Lahiri), Steger, and write Journal 3

 

Week 4, Feb 24

Collect Journal 3; Continue Interpreter of Maladies ; HW: read Steger and Lahiri, write Journal 4 and study for QUIZ 1

 

Week 5, Mar 3:  

Collect Journal 3. Take QUIZ 1. Lecture on colonialization/postcolonialization. Finish Interpreter of Maladies and Steger; Begin The Terminal (film) HW: Read Steger, and TBA, and write Journal 4

 

Week 6, Mar 10:  

Collect Journal 4. Finish and discuss The Terminal. Midterm Analysis Essay assigned–What is good student writing? HW: read Steger and Mengestu; write Journal 5

 

Week 7, Mar 17:   

Collect Journal 5. Discuss Midterm Essay; HW: Write draft of Midterm Essay and bring next week

 

Week 8, Mar 24:

Peer review of Midterm Essay; Lecture on colonialism/Postcolonialism, partition; HW: Revise Midterm Essay

 

Week 9, Mar 31:

*****Midterm Essay Due.

 

Week 10, Apr 7

SPRING RECESS: ENJOY

 

Week 11, Apr 14:

Discuss: class/caste; history of Iran–context. Film TBA; HW: Begin Persepolis. Journal 6

 

Week 12, Apr 21:

Collect Journal 6. Finish watching film; begin Persepolis. Final Research Paper Assigned, lecture: Iranian history/veil; HW: study for QUIZ 2

 

Week 12, Apr 28:

QUIZ 2; Discuss Persepolis, lecture: technology and globalization and ethics; HW: Journal 7

 

Week 13, May 5:

Collect Journal 7, Continue reading Persepolis, discuss politics and ethics; HW: Bring draft of Final Essay next Tuesday for peer review

 

Week 14, May 12:

Draft of Final Essay Due, Finish Persepolis, Final Essay Q & A

 

Week 15, May 19:
