Building my ePortfolio
One of the main tasks during my internship with the City Tech OpenLab has been developing and refining my ePortfolio. Since I am a Communication Design major, creating a professional portfolio is an important part of presenting my work and skills. At the beginning of this process, I had to carefully choose which projects from my previous classes best represented my abilities as a designer. This required reviewing my past work, selecting the strongest projects, and thinking about how they could be organized in a clear and visually appealing way.
After selecting the projects I wanted to include, I focused on refining them before uploading them to my portfolio. This involved improving the presentation of each project, making sure the images were clear, and writing short descriptions that explained the purpose and design process behind each piece. I also had to consider typography and how it would work with the overall theme of the website. Choosing type that worked well with the theme was important because it helped create a consistent and professional visual style throughout the portfolio.
Another part of this process involved experimenting with different themes available on OpenLab. Some themes did not match the visual layout I wanted for my portfolio, and a few of them appeared outdated. Because of this, I had to test several themes to see which one would best support my design vision. While exploring these themes, I paid close attention to how margins, borders, and spacing worked within each layout. These elements play an important role in design because they affect how organized and readable the content appears on the page.
Challenges while building my portfolio
While building the portfolio, I also encountered a few technical challenges. At times, certain pages would not appear correctly or would not update after making changes. Another issue I noticed involved the margins and spacing of the text. The layout sometimes looked different depending on the device being used. For example, the margins that looked balanced on a laptop screen did not always appear the same on a phone, which made it necessary to adjust the layout so it could work across different screen sizes.
Despite these challenges, working on my ePortfolio has helped me better understand the relationship between design and web presentation. I learned how themes, typography, margins, and layout all contribute to the overall user experience of a website. This process also gave me practical experience in problem solving and adapting my design ideas to the limitations of different templates and devices. Overall, developing my ePortfolio has been a valuable part of the internship because it allows me to present my work professionally while strengthening my skills in digital design and layout.
