Homework following class on 9/17: Avatars

For homework, read the three articles/websites about avatars: “Professional protocol when choosing a Skype avatar“; Chad Renando, “An avatar analysis: Choosing your profile picture“; Michelle Venetucci Harvey. “Design avatars that make sense — and be more inclusive in the process.”

Choose an avatar that you want to use on the OpenLab, and add it to your profile. If you need help, you can refer to this page about adding an avatar from the OpenLab Help section.

Reflecting on that avatar, add as a comment to this post your answers to the questions below:

how does your avatar represent you as a design student with the interests, motivations, aspirations, etc you have written about?

If it doesn’t represent that version of you, you might change it.

Why is it important for it to represent you? Use examples from the readings to support your answer.

(Also, be sure to give credit to the creator of your avatar image, whether it was you or someone else! And be sure you have permission to do so!)

  1. My avatar showcases myself as an ARTIST. An artist in all forms and shapes. I am a musician, some may say I can, should be a model, I am an illustrator and a creator. I showcase myself as a uniquely creative artist of many talents and my avatar shows that in a simple effective way. Me. KEN.

  2. I chose myself as my avatar because this is the age I really fell in love with art plus it gives me a glimpse into my future. In the future I want to be a children and family photographer. A couple of weeks after this photo was taken my mother painted my favorite characters on my wall and she told me how I just watched her for hours as she did it then tried to help her. This picture represents me falling in love with the thing I love to do the most.

  3. My avatar is my MyPlayer in a basketball game called 2k19. It represnts me because it shows that im a die hard basketball fan, and a gaming head. I am an artist, designer, gamer, and my avatar correctly depicts that.

  4. My avatar is a tree because, for me, trees and nature have always been a symbol of growth, transformation, and longevity. What I’ve always loved about trees is that you can cut them almost entirely and they will grow back stronger than before. That shows that it does not matter if you fail and you have to start over again, you will grow back stronger and better than before. I want to have this tree as my avatar because I want it to be my motivation every time I use Open Lab.

  5. My avatar is Sam Manson as an adult from Danny Phantom. The avatar represents me because Sam is a character whose personality and interests are similar to mine. We’re both eccentric and unapologetically ourselves. I’m not a verbally outspoken person, but I do express myself through my work because that is what I am passionate about. I’m all about the weirdness.

  6. My avatar is a picture I took of some lights in an art experience gallery . This represents me because it has vibrant colors and I’m very outgoing and funny. it is important for my avatar to represent me so people can get a better understanding of who I am. what caught my attention was in the second article “This seemingly small piece of illustrative information removes my need for imagination and provides a crucial link between my depiction of you and the identity you hold for yourself”.this image gives the audience a better understanding .

  7. My avatar is a picture I took of the sunset, I chose this because watching the sunset is a therapy for me because its soothing to watch every time since it’s different. While viewing it, ideas and thoughts spark into my head sometimes for myself and at times for creative things. In the second article it stated “This seemingly small piece of illustrative information removes my need for imagination and provides a crucial link between my depiction of you and the identity you hold for yourself.”I found this interesting because a picture can describe your identity in many ways, some can be emotional or just as simple as what things greatly interest you.

  8. My Avatar is a picture of me in high school after my 18th birthday. I chose this because at this point in my life I was doing everything that I wanted. I was graduating, going to prom, traveling, and I found out I got accepted into City Tech to get my Bachelor’s Degree. I was complete and utterly happy with my life and was glowing. This picture is a perfect representation of me because this is how I want people to see me.

  15. My avatar represents me as a design student. My avatar is well colored. I like the image because it only shows the side of the face. The image I screenshot is from a comic I’m currently reading. It’s called “Popular Deskmate is A Cat”. If you zoom in my avatar, you’ll see the girl name Shania with tears coming out. Originally the screenshot I took from the comic does not have her with tears however, I told my friend to draw her with tears. Tears, because in life nothing is easy to accomplish. Tears can make us stronger in a way, they help you grow into a better you and that is my motive of why I chose this as my avatar.

  16. My avatar is Patrick Star from Spongebob Squarepants, however, this Patrick Star is fan art drawn to send a positive message to anyone who sees it. I chose Patrick because, in many ways he and I are alike, we both may not be the brightest but we are very loyal to those we care about. I especially chose this image of Patrick because of the message, I want to spread kindness by any means. Even if it’s a message on my profile that people come across, as long as it brightens up their day it would be good enough for me.

  17. My avatar is actually a piece I created on adobe photoshop. I had to fix the colors to make it blend in with the background, and also wanted to make the colors very warm. This shows that I’m an artist at heart, I have a keen eye to detail.
