Saturation Studies: Phase 2

For Phase 2 of this project we learned about color saturation. In the chromatic study, I had to make a broad range collage and a narrow range collage(in this case high key). The colors within these two collages had to be desaturated by adding a large amount of the compliment color. The compliment colors are opposite on the color wheel such as blue and orange. In the muted study, I had to make a broad range collage and a narrow range collage(in this case middle key). The colors within these two collages had to be desaturated  by adding a compliment color but not as greatly like in the chromatic study. In the prismatic study, I had to make a broad range collage and a narrow range collage(in this case high key). The colors within these two collages had to be purely saturated which means no compliment colors or white was added. Each collage took 3 hours to complete. In total this phase took 18 hours to complete

Revised Pitch project 3

We all go about our lives trying to get to where we need to be. For most people that live in the big city they want the fastest way to their destination. Rather they take a crowded train that causes frustration or dealing with road rage when it comes to heavy traffic, it seems as though people don’t care about how their journey to their destination is. Instead of being surrounded by busy streets filled with honking cars, getting shoved by commuters and listening to all the rowdiness that goes on in the city, why don’t you enjoy a journey elsewhere.Take the time out of your busy day to relax by walking through a change in the environment. Coming later this year, an app called “Serene Crossing” will guide you to a mollifying journey that will fill your heart with ease. Serene Crossing users will go through Cadman Plaza Park, Brooklyn Heights and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade to avoid the noisier areas, one would usually walk through to get from City Tech to the A/C/R trains.

On one of our sample routes, we found a stroll that is pleasant and has a big pay off in seeing the city in a more serene setting. This sample route was taken during the season of autumn and around the time of 2:30pm. The trees in each location had their leaves in warm colors such as yellow red and orange which will provide you with a cozy feeling as you try our route. You’ll first start off by exiting the Namm building of Citytech through the general floor. When you are outside turn left and make your way to the corner of Jay Street. Once you see Mclaughlin Park make another left and keep on going until you hit Cadman Plaza East.

As you venture your way there you will notice that you are moving away from the commotion from the construction site. According to Janice Wood interview with Dr.Marc Berman, he states that “Our study showed that participants with clinical depression demonstrated improved memory performance after a walk in nature, compared to a walk in a busy urban environment”. In other words Dr.Berman believes that walk through an environment with nature is more beneficial than an urban environment. When the mind is in a clear state, the body is able to relieve from stress. Urmet Seepter would agree with Dr.Berman’s statement by saying ”Other benefits include releasing endorphins that can help one diminish constant worrying which also helps with dealing with depression”. Dr.Berman’s and Seepter’s statements agree that walking helps people that are clinically depressed. Everybody goes through stress and stress can lead on to depression. It’s important to keep yourself relaxed when stress comes your way.

On Cadman Plaza East to your right you will enter through Cadman Plaza Park. Pam Severns agrees when she writes,”Walking connects you to your surroundings and can give you a sense of place”. Severns believes that we notice things we probably haven’t noticed before by allowing our senses to flow as we walk. By walking we our decluttering our minds and get a relax state as a result. When strolling your way through the park enjoy the calm aura of people having lunch on the benches, the mass amounts of trees that engulf you and the sounds of birds chirping.   When you see an open field, in front of it there is a circular flower bed filled with vibrant red yellow and orange flowers. Go around the flower bed and exit the park so you can be on Clark Street and Cadman Plaza West.

Clark Street is part of the residential area known as Brooklyn Heights. As you are walking through Clark street at first you will pass by some sushi restaurants, cafes and lounges. The area has a low noise level so you can have a peaceful meal at one of these establishments. Through Clark Street you will also pass by apartments with gorgeous lobbies, smooth arches on the windows and houses with fine detail on the gates and stairways.Another sighting you will see if you look up in the northeast direction is The Freedom Tower. Once you see Willows Street make a right and continue your way through the calm environment of the neighborhood.

The whole Brooklyn Heights area not only provides people with housing but there is a lot of trees and plants around that gives an inviting feeling into the area itself. The article “Brooklyn Heights Promenade” describes Brooklyn heights as “The adjacent neighborhood of charming brownstone homes and quiet streets is well worth investigating”. Basically, the article is saying that the neighborhood itself doesn’t have much activity so you can enjoy the sights of these living accommodations while strolling your way through. When you see Cranberry Street make a left and walk down to where you hit Columbia Heights.

You will make a left turn and enter through Brooklyn Heights Promenade. This is a nice place to relax yourself whether it be after a long walk or to unwind from a busy day of work. Remember seeing The Freedom Tower earlier? Well as you continue walking downwards, you will reach the destination on our route which is a marvelous sighting of The Freedom Tower along with the whole tip of Manhattan. You will see the prosperous, active city while sitting on a bench relaxing to the sounds of the waves from the East River that separates Manhattan and Brooklyn. From this location you will get to see other landmarks such as the Brooklyn Bridge, Governors Island and The Statue of Liberty. There are many pier ports that are filled with activities such as handball, ice skating, basketball and rock climbing. This location is great to visit throughout all the seasons and is beautiful in both times of night and day. While there is lively activity it doesn’t affect the serene atmosphere from where you are currently at.

While many apps provide people the quickest way to get to places how about one that offers people a long journey to endure. There’s people that enjoy strolls and like to embrace each moment they experience in it. This app will provide you with plenty of peaceful destinations as well as find the most leisurely route for you. It is just all up to you to make that choice to take in the calm energy around a lovely stroll.

Picture Perfect Family and Love Exists  2015
Pigma Micron Pens(0.2, 0.5 and Brush), Faber-Castell Brush Pen, scissors and various pencils(HB-6B).

While combining concepts from graphic design and linguistic language, Brandy Ortiz made compositions with themes that juxtapose from the original theme from the novel “Brimestone” by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. The theme for the pages she constructed shows love while the theme for “Brimestone” is thriller. “The Picture Perfect Family” shows the message from the selected text by making a frame within the margins. The frame was first made by using the pens to make an outline. Then with the Faber-Castell Brush Pen she inked the page while leaving out the selected text to be revealed. The message explains a family that enjoys getting together and the frame makes the text appear to be the picture. “Love Exists” has the text appear from cutting out certain words from various pages to show all on one page. The idea behind the message was that love is a great feeling to have in the world we live in. Most of the page is shaded by pencil and represents low key. The heart shows that love will always be there even when surround by darkness.

Saturation Studies: Phase 1

My concept behind this color wheel was to be a heart that was made up of little hearts. In the middle I put the colors that I used to make the rest of the colors within the wheel. Throughout the creation of this wheel I felt nothing but pure joy for the beautiful colors that I made. I would have to say though for me blue was the color I had some struggle getting but eventually I got it. This took 1 hour and 30 minutes.

What if I told you to take the time out of your busy day to relax just by walking in a change in the environment. By taking a route that eliminates rambunctious noises, you’ll be rewarded with a more tranquil atmosphere.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 3

My broad value range and narrow value range collages both took 3 hours each to complete. My painted collage took 8 hours to complete. The digital collage took 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The 3D Anaglyph took about 20 minutes to complete.

Value-Added Portraits: Phase 4

At the beginning of this project I was first introduced to the concepts of high key and low key value ranges. After finding examples of both concepts within the CityTech area I had to explain the tone that each example gives off. I learned that with high key ranges there’s usually a happier tone while with low key ranges there’s a more mysterious and dramatic tone. Next I learned the concept of a broad key value range by making a grayscale. Also I learned that high key and low key ranges are known as narrow ranges. By learning these 3 concepts I had to make 2 collages which consisted of one being a narrow value range and the other being a broad value range. After the first critique I pretty much had to redo both collages. The successful part was that my collages were distinguishable in terms of value range. What was missing was providing a clear focus and path within the collages. After seeing my peer’s collages I got a better sense on how to improve my collages. The next assignment was to make a painted version of the broad range collage and a digital version of the narrow range collage. When I first heard painting I was really excited but when it came down to actually painting I was scared because we had to mix white and black paints to create broad ranges of gray. This task was pretty tedious and I tried my best to make the shades really close to the collage. I got a kind of bitter-sweet feeling when I finally finished because my painting wasn’t in exact detail as I would’ve wanted it to be but for my first time doing something like this I at least learned how to handle paint more. I got a bit discouraged during the critique because there was painted collages that I thought looked better than mine. But I’m coming to terms that I’m still learning and through more practice I can improve. Since the next project deals with paints I feel I’ll get more satisfying results since I learned how to deal with paint through this experience. With the digital collage I was more comfortable because I at least had some experience of Indesign from Type and Media even though the program was Photoshop. The next assignment was making a 3D Anaglyph from my portrait which was fun until the 3D started bothering my eyes.

Anomalies

noun(plural form of anomaly)

  • something that is unusual or unexpected : something anomalous

    Source:http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anomaly

When I came across this word in the reading excerpt  “The Happiest and Saddest Places in New York City, According to Twitter” by Ben Merchant, it was misspelled so I provided the right word. This word can be found in the sentence ” There are some strange anomalies in the study, too”. In the passage before this sentence researchers claimed that hospitals and prisons had some of the most negative tweets. The passage after the sentence explains that researchers found 3 cemeteries which attracted among the strongest Twitter sentiment on the list. While two cemeteries received many negative tweets, the third cemetery had many positive tweets. Researchers were unable to determine why that might be. By that being said I can see how the results were anomalous.
