Project 4: Revised Pitch

Most people walk the same route to there destination everyday. They see the same scenery everyday. This cause people to start ignoring their surroundings. By doing this people block out any new sights that could be seen. People also like taking the fastest route to there destination. They try to avoid any detour possible, because it would make them late. No one likes to be late, but what if you had 15 minutes extra to spare, or maybe your professor decided to cancel class, but you can’t go home because you have another class right after. Theirs even the possibility that you just finished class and you don’t want to go home straight away or maybe your waiting for your special someone and you got there too early. Theirs many different reasons why you would have free time on your hands. You should take my route if you find yourself with some free time. You’ll have a fabulous time and you’ll get to know the surrounding area better. You’ll enjoy the nice fauna of nature and the beautiful architecture made by human kind. You’ll even have nice tasty food to chow down on, in case you get hungry. My route takes you from High Street, where you can the A and C subway lines to City Tech. You can use my walk to get better acquainted with the area.

Once you get off the train you should walk toward Middagh Street. There you’ll see the entrance to Cadman Plaza park. You’ll be walking through the park, so you’ll experience the natural beauty of nature. You’ll head toward the historical monument, dedicated to William Jay Gaynor. From there you’ll take the path with benches lined off toward the left. If you ever feel tired, you can always sit down and take a breather. While continuing down this path you’ll notice lots of different shades of brown and orange leaves. Since its Autumn you’ll be seeing plenty of those. You’ll then reach a place where you could either go right or left. If you take the time to look straight ahead you’ll notice trees line off on the right and left sides, followed by a green pasture of grass at the bottom. It’ll give off a magical feeling, like if your in Lewis Carroll’s Wonderland.  From here you’ll turn right and you’ll start to see a big open field, where kids normally play. The field is full of green artificial grass, but you still get the idea of staring at a big open pasture of real green grass. You may even feel tempted to lay down and take a nap on the grass. Their also benches here so if you get tired you could sit and rest without having to worry about dirtying your clothes. You’ll continue down this path until you start to see the United States Court House, you will be getting close to the end of Cadman Plaza park. Upon reaching the exit, if you turn and look behind you, you’ll see two statues of two ladies. This is a perfect example of man made beauty.

Upon exiting the park you’ll be on Tillary Street. You’ll walk down toward the post office. The building looks very old and doesn’t look like a modern day post office. This is another perfect example of man made beauty. You’ll climb the steps and walk near the post office doors. Here you’ll see beautiful stonework and very intricate details most post offices don’t have. You can stop to admire the nice beautiful arches and pillars. The building itself makes you think you’ve traveled back in time, toward the Roman era.

While coming toward the end of the steps, you’ll eventually reach Johnson Street. Here you’ll be heading into Columbus park. Near the entrance you’ll see two statues of a old man and two kids playing around him. Their in this bushy area with flowering buds on them. It gives off a calming feeling. You’ll continue down till you reach these little red houses/shacks. The houses give off a nice vibrant shade of red. At this time of year people will be selling things for the holidays, so have money ready in case something catches your eye. You’ll continue walking until you start to see the Supreme Court on the left. Next to the court has a tall pillar with a statue of a man on it. The man looks as if he’s posing for a picture. A little past the court is Borough Hall. It has beautiful pillars that look like they came from ancient Athens. Toward the back is a kind of tower with a clock right in the middle. It makes you think you took a trip to London itself. On the roof of the tower is a gold statue of a woman, making you think its some sort of goddess reaching for the sky. In front of Borough Hall is a fountain that usually has water flowing, but because of the time of year its dry. You can still stop and admire the nice designs.

Lastly you’ll walk down Court Street. Since its nearing the holidays, most stores are dressed up. If you look off into the horizon you’ll notice a tall tower belonging to a chapel. You’ll walk toward it until you reach Joralemon Street. Turn there and walk toward the tall building with a lot of windows. You’ll start to see places where you could buy food. You can either stop in a Shake Shack or Panera Bread. If you want to go cheap you can go to McDonalds or Burger King. After appeasing your hunger you can head straight to class.

This route takes you to beautiful places, both natural and man made. You’ll see things that catches your eyes and many shades of color. You can enjoy a nice quiet walk through the park or go shopping. You have places to sit and relax or a nice wide place to run around. You’ll enjoy the nice foods. Taking the same route everyday can be very boring, especially if it doesn’t have anything interesting about it. If you take this chance and make a detour you won’t regret it.

Project 4: The Route

The route I walked was from High Street to CityTech. It includes the natural beauty of nature along with the man made beauty. It also has the many food places that a person could go if they should feel hungry. As you get off the A train at High Street you turn towards Middagh street. You then cross the street and go into the park. At the park you would see a memorial dedicated William Jay Gayner. The memorial is made out of stone with words engraved in it. From the memorial you would walk toward Cadman Plaza. Toward  your right and left you will see trees and many leaves on the ground. You will walk down the path with all the benches. As you continue you will see rows of trees to your right and left going off toward the horizon. If you stand in the middle look you will start to feel like your walking down a magical path. As you keep walking you will make a right toward the fields. Here you can enjoy the natural  green color of the grass as the sun shines upon it. You can see the the kids play and relax on the benches. From here you’ll continues straight. As you walking you should see the United States Court house. If you look at you should see the many windows and how the front in rounded off. As your nearing the exit of the park, you should turn around and you’ll see two statues of two ladies off in the distance. When you exit the park you will be on Tillary Street. You make a left and walk toward the post office. The post office is a good example of man made beauty. You’ll notice all the intricate details. The post office will remind of a old roman building, with its pillars and arches. As you walk on the post office steps you’ll meet Johnson Street. You’ll cross the street and then you would enter Columbus park. You’ll see a statue of a man with two children playing around him. You’ll continue straight until you see the bright red building. When the sun shines on them you’ll see a nice hue of red. As you pass the red buildings you’ll see the a big fountain. Past the fountain you’ll see borough hall. This is another great example of man made beauty. You’ll then make a right onto court street and walk down, until you reach Joralemon street. You’ll eventually start to see lots of fast food places. Places like Shake shack and Panera Bread are a good place to quell your hunger. From there you can continue toward CityTech. With your eyes appeased and your hunger sated, you can start your day at school.

The Pitch

What can one really obtain from using the same quick path every day to and from City Tech? First, the person has to know that there is something you can get out of walking a different route to the subway or to City Tech. Downtown Brooklyn and the Brooklyn Heights area are neighborhoods one can simply learn more about just by taking a short detour and exploring their surroundings. Walking with someone can make the experience even better because everyone has different perspectives and you both can point out different things in sight. This route maximizes nature and will add about 10 minutes to one’s regular path.

After a long day at City Tech, a student may be exhausted and have to get ready for the commute home. Instead of walking to the train and going straight into the train station where the loud noise and crowd can add on to this student’s exhaustion, the student can simply take a walk. Specifically this student can walk to embrace quietness, nature and happiness on the route I chose. Taking this walk will make a person’s mind more at ease with getting on the train home from City Tech. Starting down Jay Street into the walkway/passageway- it has trees and benches where you can sit down and even charge your phone or whatever wireless device you have. Nature is around when settling down there but it may not be so quiet. If you wanted more quietness, Cadman Plaza Park would be the next stop.

Walking to Cadman Plaza is an extra five minutes, but it’s worth it. Upon entering the park you’ll come upon a neatly paved stone path that outlines the big green field of grass. The field has a statue of William Jay Gaynor, a Mayor of NYC from the 20th century. Now the scenery in the park is great no matter what time of day. When the sun is out you can see all the colors in the park- the red, yellow and brown leaves on the almost-bare trees, the crunchy leaves on the ground, the dulling green of the grass on the sides of the path, and the bright green of the open field of grass. The comfort of the colors and quietness of nature during the day can be a much better experience than taking the straight, simple, direct route to the train station. When the sun has set and the sky is a dark blue color, the park lights are on and everything looks illuminated- the trees, the ground and the walkway with the benches on either side. Also, near one corner in the park you can see the Empire State Building brightly lit up past other buildings and trees in the distance. This is another pleasant sight to see on your walk in the evening. It’s also quieter in the park in the evening since that’s the time everyone settles down and/or goes home. The cool fall-wintry air is just as refreshing as the summer evening air since it is all natural “park” air.

Leaving Cadman Plaza Park to get to the Borough Hall train station you’ll have to walk through another park- Columbus Park. Columbus Park isn’t as big or as attractive as Cadman Plaza, but it still is a park with trees and a few benches. Its plants are less prismatic, however this is the only form of nature that is nearest to the train station. It is wide and open spaced so there won’t be people in your way to distract you from taking a stroll through there. You can also sit down in this park even though there will be more people passing through because it is somewhat of a walkway, but not too many people for there to be a crowd.

Walking through the park or even sitting down in the park can be mind refreshing compared to leaving school and sitting down on a bench in the train station. It reduces stress and can help develop a sense of relaxation. There are a lot of benefits of walking in general. Studies say that brain fatigue can be eased with a walk in the park. Brain fatigue is basically caused from living the rushed, hectic city life and not taking your time. Changing a path is a small step that can be a big deal to how a person starts or ends their day. It can be that one small step that can lead to a feeling of happiness in that person’s day.

Project 4:Direction & Detour

After the lovely rain of yesterday, I have to say, today’s weather was awful! However, I still took the detour which was on my today’s schedule, even though it was only 25 F outside.

I planned to walk to Brooklyn War Memorial because it looks like a park on the map, or walk all the way down to Brooklyn bridge. Unfortunately, I approached  neither.  I went to the opposite direction on Tillary St, it was a quite neighborhood. So I went back to find a right direction.  I change my destination a little bit. I made a right on Flatbush Ave which is to the Manhattan bridge. I didn’t go any bridge in the end because I really cannot stand the fierce wind, so I went back to campus. Anyway,  I found a beautiful triangle shape of safe island around Nassau St.

I think I probably will redo the detour, tomorrow.  Wish tomorrow will be a nice weather!
