Updates on Atlas

Updates on Atlas

It was such a great experience going to the Brooklyn Historical Society because I never been there before, and seeing everything about history back then was very interesting. We went there to see different maps on different time periods, and how we can compare that to today’s life and how we see things in our everyday lives. My group and I had three different maps, and we had to visualize, and write what we observed from each map. The maps we had was from the 1800s, 1900s and 2003. When you look at these maps, you could tell right away which one is old and which one is newly present. We demonstrated how by showing to our professors that the oldest map compared to the other two was old, and the color was faded. Moving forward to the more present maps, it showed more saturation and contrast, the color was good enough to read important information. In addition, what was also very interesting to me was the fire insurances Atlas, in this case showed what each building was made of( wood, brick, ground, etc) and how it worked for each. Each year or so, people would come and update these Atlas, and you could feel how rough the paper was with so much glue they would use pasting the paper on top of the old. Overall it was a great going there and realizing how time passes by so fast, you could see how everything changed from housing, transportation and a whole other things.

“Wonder ” Exhibition

Ming Yin Wong
Ming Yin Wong

This work by Ming Yin Wong, is the most favorite one for me.  The  main character in this picture should be the women, she seems like to show peace, wisdom, or confidence. However when I moved  my eyes upper, I saw a plane fling and leaving a white line upon her.  I feel like ironic in this work.   The  sculpture is felt serious, but the plane left a funny impression for me, like a joke.  The whole picture tells me a story that the goddess of courage is encouraging people to fight enemies, at the same time, the plane’s flying and saying, “dont worry about me,I’m just a stranger.  ” They ‘ve made a contrast which is really interesting.

IMG_20141110_134035For my walk project if we are to include a map I would like to include a little manuscript map. Although it is very tedious and precise I really liked that style. I would also like to include a good legend because I noticed in one of my groups maps that it was two sided but the legend or key was only on one side so I would put it on both sides. Lastly, there was one unique map named “Heart Of Brooklyn” and it had a drawn heart on it where the artist believed the Heart of Brooklyn was, and I that was a very cool idea.

Map of the BK subway lines

Boro Hall Civil Center 1955; flat maps b 1955 fl ( BK subway maps)

On today’s field trip we went into the BHS library which consisted of all sorts of primary information that can’t be found anywhere else. We mainly focused on maps of Brooklyn from different time periods . This is something that I would most likely include into project 4. For example, in my group we had a manuscript map of Brooklyn in 1856 which depicted the cut-off boundaries of farm lands that people owned. There was also a clear detailed drawing of the cliff of Brooklyn Heights. This was before the construction of the Brooklyn bridge, so the steam boat was a popular way to travel between the boroughs. Another map, which was printed, displays the subway map map from 1955. As we know, the train system was originally a series of companies that operated in different ways. This map is a significant piece of history that I could add to my project. Lastly, we saw a large booklet of maps that was created by the fire department during the time. From what I learned in class, civilians that lived in homes made of wood would be charged higher than someone in a brick house because of the higher chance of a fire. These different maps of Brooklyn give me a better understanding of it’s history that goes way beyond my time. Each version allowed me to see every phase that has come. I should have a better grasp of this concept from the research which will be a good guide for this project.

BHS Field Trip Reflection

In today’s class we visited the The BHS on Pierrepont St, In Brooklyn. This trip was a different experience that allowed me to see first hand primary resources, as well as photos to go with them. In the wonder exhibit, I applied the things we have learned such as the rule of thirds or a juxtapositions into the pictures that we have seen. There was one particular image that I found interesting during the walk. This frame consists of a cemetery filled with tomb stones and tall city buildings that can be seen in the distance. I immediately saw an overlap. In my opinion, the cemetery represents death were as the buildings in the distance depict civilization or flourishing life. 20141110_133647

Querulous

Source: Merriam-Webster.com

Querlous: complaining in a petulant or whining manner

I came across this word in the text “Reading Lucy” by Jennifer Lucy. It sort of caught me off guard in a way because I hadn’t seen any previous vocabulary. In the text it stated: “She also had a habit of footnoting words whose meanings Alfred might not know-like querulous-and providing definitions”. the sentence I found it in is interesting because this particular word was an example of something people would not generally know. I saw it as a question within a question. When I found the definition it didn’t really make much of a difference because it was not included for the purpose of getting a message across.

Happiest place in New york

One of my happiest places in New york is the Chelsea piers sports center in Manhattan. This center offers a number of sports such as ice skating, roller skating, golf and more. When I first stepped inside, I could hear the loud screaming of players enjoying their time in the area. I see skaters speeding across the ice while trying to avoid those that have fallen. This makes me happy because it’s the best place for friends and family to spend time with each other while learning a new experience. It’s also an interactive environment for athletes and participants to get to know each other and raise a competitive spirit.

Nebulous

Source: Merriam-Webster.com

Nebulous- unclear, vague or ill defined

When I came across this word in the text in class( What if you could choose between the fastest route and the most beautiful). My lack of knowledge of what this word meant made it confusing to understand what the text meant. Using context clues did not help the situation as much either. The sentence this word was found in states, ” But how do you quantify concepts as nebulous as beauty or happiness”. Finding the definition made the text simpler to understand as usual. But in this case I can know the specific question they’re trying to involved.

Melancholy

Source- Merriam-Webster.com

Melancholy- a sad mood or feeling

I came across this vocabulary word in the article ” A literary visitor strolls from the airport”. It states, “.. Mr. Self, who is unusually tall and very thin and has a long melancholy face that he once described as looking like a bag of genitals…..” From the text it came from, I determined that it isn’t a positive word that people may use often to describe an individual. Once I found the meaning of the world, I was able to picture the typical expression that Mr. Self may always have on. With this in mind, the actions that he takes on further in the passage makes more sense because I have more of an understanding of who this man is.
