Project 2:Reflection

I know I took awhile to finish project 2, and I’m sorry for the lateness. I really did enjoy project 2 because it helped open my eyes to things I probably wouldn’t notice. I got the explore the places next to my school. I found it hard to juxtapose the places it went to. I probably didn’t explain it to well in my essay. I hope to improve on this. I want to be able to explain things well because I feel that it’ll help me in the future. Again i’m sorry for the late essay.

Reflection: A literary Visitor strolls in from the airport

Charles Mcgrath’s article on Will Self’s exploration of New York City from JFK airport to manhattan examines how often we really do not take the time to observe the city we live in. Considering Self’s past drug and drinking habits to know that for him walking has taken the place of these habits reflects on how other people deal with replacing their old habits. Will Self describes walking to give him a feeling even better than drugs and it shows a newfound appreciation for life that isn’t hidden behind an inebriated state. Self goes on his adventure and describes what he saw and how amazed he was at simple things such as two people from different backgrounds talking to each other. This amazement reminded me of times when i would walk from my school to my house or from downtown brooklyn into flatbush avenue and watch the shift in cultures and people.

Class reading,What If You Could Choose…the Most Beautiful? Summary & Reflection

Summary

The article, “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful? ” from The Atlantic, city lab, prospects that GPS might not the first consideration for navigating in the future by a citizen participated experiment. A group researchers from Yahoo! gave more than 3000 citizens in London two street-view pictures  to choose which view is more beautiful. The result showed that with a huge number of people to pick up a satisfied way, they usually could get a general agreement. When researchers narrowed down the participants, they got a detailed result. Further more, to fit other worldwide counties, researchers achieve their goal by using Flickr which also owned by Yahoo! as a metadata. This experiment was tested successfully in Boston. In the end, the author encourage people to take an extra couple of minutes for a detour to enjoy your urban experience.

Reflection

For me, I think it will depend on some objective conditions, but there is no doubt that I will choose a beautiful route to my destination. The differences are, if I’m alone, I’d like to choose a quite route, except for night. Quite route helps me pay attention to observe the environment and thinking; if I’m with friends, I like like to choose a noisy route or a route that has some famous buildings or landmarks because we can share opinions.  Sometimes, I’m tired of long distance like route from home to school, so in this condition I’d like the shortest route, just the blue sky, still beautiful.

Reflection & Summary of the reading, “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful?”

Summary

In the reading, “What If You Could Choose Between the Fastest Route and the Most Beautiful”, from the Atlantic CityLab, tests out if people enjoy walking in a more beautiful, happy, & quieter route or a more shorter route. It states that the participants that volunteered this experiment was shown two pictures of the location of London, which was the “test city”, had to choose which was more beautiful, happy, or quiet. But the more of them that picked between the pictures, it was altogether a general agreement. Using that, they had to have judges that were familiar with London to test it out. But it was all depending on what the weather or time of day to walk on those routes (beautiful, happy, shortest, or quiet) and they simply took pictures of the route they were on instead of walking. So, that information proved that the photosharing site Flickr, owned by Yahoo!, was good alternative  for everybody.

Reflection

My Preference/alternative for a route that is not the shortest would be able to see more nature or greener scenery to make feel calm and peaceful. Seeing more in the route you choose would make the trip more interesting and not a waste of time. Make time for just a stroll somewhere that can make you feel lighter or stress free. I noticed that people love to see new, beautiful, historic things around them. It’s fun to watch actually. Anyway, I’ve been enjoying walking every since I was able to stand on my two little feels. I don’t care about how far or how long it would be for me to, but if someone was with me, they would be asking me questions over and over of where we’re going, how far is it, why do we have to walk so much, we can go this way. It’s annoying. Mostly throughout my life, I walked alone to places I want to clear my mind when I’m stressed or angry. Like walking around nature is the best and long route to do. You could be walking around in circles for hours and didn’t even know it because your just focusing on the surroundings than the time. It helped me with  my struggle with depression years ago (makes me show old even though I’m 19 years old) and it can helps others as well. I think I’m rambling.

Project 1 reflection

Before this project, I would just look out my window and think nothing of what I say. This allowed me to take something so simple and see it through a completely different perspective. I’ve had the same view out that window for years and have never taken a minute to observe the simple things that are right outside.  In my opinion, the inking portion of the project was better for me to complete than the cut out piece. I feel that I had more control of what I was trying to accomplish with my work. My cut out could have been more precise with cleaner curves and edges. This was because I was just getting used to the tools I required, therefore some parts didn’t come out the way I intended. This project has taught me some things that I applied to project 2 and 3 but I’m always open to improvement.

Ways of Seeing : Project #2 Reflection

I enjoyed this particular project because not only did you get to write what you visualize, but you get to travel from one place to another. While finding my New York, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would have been, especially the juxtaposition of two things. Writing the essay, I felt great. Putting all of my thoughts in, and of course details from Colson Whitehead’s article. When I juxtaposed the two things of my New York, i also did in general about all New York. What I learned from this project was a lot of things, but particularly three things. First, I didn’t know what juxtaposition was until this project was all about it. Learning this new word not only will I use it when i need that right word to use, but it’s good to write on essays to build up my vocabulary. Second, I enjoy walking and taking journeys, and going to my New York was the best choice ever. I took pictures, drew, and just sat there and relax. When you go to so many different places, you wonder a lot of things. You ask yourself what was here before that now is this?… So this projects made me learn lastly that everywhere, around the world, time is the key to everything. In time, change happens in the blink of an eye, and when you see that laundromat when you were young is now a clothing store, you juxtaposed from before to after. This project was about life experience and New York and all these different things, and that is why it became interesting to write about. Reading Whitehead’s article, he talked about his New York, and in that case we all have our own New York and how we feel about it. I was a fun project, traveling, writing, visualizing and this is a part of a big whole of designing and writing!

Project #2: Reflection

While I was doing project #2 I worried the most about writing more of an agenda than relating my journey to Colson Whitehead’s ‘City Limits’. I was surprisingly happy to do this project. It made me actually look at the areas of downtown brooklyn. I got to observe the overlapping New Yorks and dug deeper into the history and dynamics of the area. Making up to 900 words was a bit of a struggle for me but nevertheless the more I wrote the essay the more I began to explore the juxtapositions of the New Yorks I was assigned to. I still believe there is a lot that I could work on and correct. For now I’m very happy that I was able to relate the culture of Fulton street and Court street to that of ‘City Limits’ and ‘Ways of Seeing’.

Project 2: Reflection

Time goes fast, we’ve already finished two projects for this semester. In this project, I’ve learned about juxtaposition, we walked around our campus to find our juxtapositions. Also  Colson Whitehead’s book “City Limits” has give us some ideas of juxtapositions. I like the way we’ve learn by walking around city first. I feel like this is useful to help me understand the project. For this project, I think I need to prove comment skills. By ‘peer to peer review’ part, I’ve read a lot of amazing works from our classmates. I feel like that they are all good so that I cannot leave a comment objectively.  Their works help me to get the points of our projects which are pretty useful.  I’ll still work on my works of project 1 and 2 to make them  much better. One more thing is I”m trying to post every work on time and be in class on time.

A literary visitor stolls in from the airport: Reflection

While reading the article by Charles Mcgrath which talks about Will Self’s exploration of New York City, I can’t help but relate to his Self’s experiences. For one Self talks about the pleasure he derives from his walks and how it surpasses the pleasure he once obtained from drugs, on my end I would takes walks as a way to relax my inner turmoil without having to do drugs, not that I ever did mind you. Self’s stance on walking and exploration is that walking is one of the very few forms out there that represent true exploration in today’s post-industrial age, with this I also agree with as well. Self talks about his walk to the airport and his walk to the hotel which was more dangerous than he had first expected it to be, from my own experiences I too agree with him and his stance. By walking home from school during high school I was able to see new sights and experience other things that I otherwise would not have experienced if I had taken a method of mass transportation. Overall what stood out to me the most is his journey and the way it connects to me, but not only that but how it also connects to a reading we have made before in class.

Project#2 :Summary & Reflection

For Project#2, I had to write about the location I chose that was 15 minutes away from CityTech.  My location was on Court st. & State st. next to this old looking movie theater. I wrote about how interested I was in the area  for being a more relaxed and uplifting atmosphere. Even discussed the overlap/ juxtaposition cities from where I stood and the area I see from a far distance.

Summary

As we read the reading, “City Limits”, by Colson Whitehead, he writes about the overlap of different New Yorks. We had to find some different overlapping New Yorks ourselves. To walk anywhere that’s 15 to 20 minutes or more away from Citytech. Also look for New yorks that juxtaposition (example: old and new structures). Then we had to write an essay in 900-1200 words. In our essays, we needed to add our senses, hearing, smelling, and seeing and quotes from the reading, “Ciy limits”, to support the essay. But we had to prepare before jumping into the essay. We had to choose a location that is right to you and then chart our course to the location from Citytech. Needs to have more details than Google. Next, describe the location with much details as you can with the sights and about the juxtaposition. Then explain why you chose the location and try to add Whitehead’s quotes.

Finally, you can get started with the essay!

Reflection

This project has made me learn more about the area around Citytech/Brooklyn. I don’t live around the area or in Brooklyn in general but this help me realize that there’s so much more in Brooklyn never knew about that I never knew about. It was fun and interesting to see the new sites with someone and see more of the area than what I see from just a glance. I wanted to see everything in such little time. The area I chose as an example, to find the overlapping in this area was sort of difficult but intriguing as I kept looking for its juxtaposition. But as I read Whitehead’s words, most of his quotes really help me find it in the area and I had to look deeper into it. Anyway, I was mostly  proud of how I describe the movie theater and the court building because I thought I had a lot to say about them of course.

Total time on Project#2:

6 hrs I spent on the project altogether.
