Project #4: The Pitch (Final)

In today’s world everyone is always rushing to get to their destination. Taking the quickest route that they know of and never really appreciating the things around them. Especially those who live in New York as it’s almost always a busy place. So what if you had a couple minutes to spare on your way home? You’re in no rush, probably tired of walking the same old route that you take everyday, and you want to discover a new route. This route can take you through beautiful places you haven’t seen or noticed before and you’ll also discover many new places around you that you can always go back to visit! You’ll go from the noisy busy street that you’re used to into a much more calm and quiet area. If a route like this peaks your interest then you can download this app and depend on it to take you on a route through a much happier area where you can discover many new places and experience beauty and peace!

This route will take you from City Tech to the A, C, and G subway station at Hoyt and Schermerhorn street! You’ll experience the normal and quite noisy route, but you’ll go through a beautiful area there that will distract you from all of the crowds and noise around you. Eventually you’ll walk into a calm and quiet area, a nice place to walk through especially when you’re not in a rush. To start off this route, once you exit City Tech, take a right and walk down Jay Street. You’ll be walking through that crowded area of Jay Street MetroTech. Where there’s always people rushing to work, school, and who knows where else. The surroundings also seem a bit loud because right across from City Tech there’s a construction site and there’s cars all around the busy area. Cross the street when you see the Marriott building and you’ll notice a plaza area. This area isn’t usually too crowded, so you can take a nice stroll through it. It’s very beautiful around this time of year because it’s decorated for Christmas. This area is generally a nice place to sit, relax, look at the things around you, and maybe even have a snack while you’re relaxing! You can find several food places here if you want to grab something to eat before you go home. There’s places such as StarBucks, Chipotle, Five Guys and even more. If you walk into the plaza you’ll see all of those and across from Five Guys there’s a huge Christmas Tree that looks amazing! It’s not as big, or well decorated as the one in Rockefeller Center but it definitely did remind me of that as the huge tree is in the middle of this area.  Right behind the tree you’ll notice a work of art that actually changes every few months. In that area you may notice how at this time of year all of the trees around the donated piece of art have no leaves at all and it’s very interesting to see. Just stopping to appreciate the things you see here will really take your mind off of the amount of people and noise around you, it puts you in a happier place! You can sit down at the benches or tables outside of the stores in this area if you want to relax. This is a nice detour if you would like to appreciate some art work and beauty around your area and even find a place to eat. After this you can continue your journey walking to the subway station and walking down Jay Street once again.

As you’re walking down Jay Street you’ll pass by many food places. A lot you’ll recognize such as Subway or Dunkin Donuts. So there is even more food options! If you’re feeling like trying something new  or going to a place that’s not so well known, there’s tons of cafes and restaurants along the route! One happens to be on Smith Street which you’ll walk straight into as you’re walking down Jay Street, it’s called Apollo Diner. But before you get to Smith Street, you’ll see a street sign on your walk down Jay Street that says Fulton Mall. It’s an outdoor mall that’s a great area to walk through and visit if you want to make another detour! There’s tons of different stores to discover around here that you can always come back to visit! Once you’ve walked through Jay Street and have walked into Smith street the crowds are gone and it’s much nicer in an emptier area. It’s more peaceful when there’s not a lot of noise around you.

Walking down Smith Street you’ll walk past a car parking service that you can’t miss because of the huge sign and you’ll see the appearance of cars stacked up. That itself is very eye catching and interesting to see. You’ll come upon Schermerhorn Street on your left and walk down there, and as you do the main thing you’ll most likely focus on is a tall glass building! It’s not like anything in Manhattan but it sure will catch your eye. The architecture of the different buildings on this route is definitely an interesting aspect. Now if you all of a sudden realize that you’ve got to rush home for something, no worries because there’s several different entrances to the same Subway station! But this route will be taking you to the last one on Hoyt so you can see all of the stores! There are many Cafe’s and restaurants that you’ll notice along here. The buildings on Schermerhorn seem to be mostly stone but you’ll come across two tall glass buildings, one of which was right as we turn. Seeing the different buildings and how they vary in size is interesting. The stone buildings along Schermerhorn street look more classic in a way and less modern which is not bad, it’s interesting to see older styled buildings especially when you can compare it to more of modern day buildings directly across the street! You usually won’t see too much of the older buildings. This walk is now much more peaceful because it isn’t crowded at all and you can take your time to actually notice the different buildings and all of the stores just like on Jay Street. Being in a quieter area generally should help you feel more calm and maybe even happier as you’re looking at your surroundings while you walk.  Eventually after 2 blocks down Schermerhorn street you’ll find your destination which is the subway station for the A, C, and G trains. Right next to it is also a Goodwill so if you’ve got time you can even go shopping there.

This route takes you from beauty and peaceful relaxing areas to areas that you can discover new things, and new places to visit. It’s a lot within one new route!  You’ll experience a little bit of everything! You can find your happiness if you take a new route, even with the smallest change. This app can be the future for everyone, and help a lot when traveling!

Project #4: The Pitch

There’s so much to discover out there everyday. You walk the same old route back and fourth everyday, why not take a detour for once and possibly find a new place of your interest? Let’s say you’ve got nothing to do after school and you’re in no rush at all to go home. Get to know the area you travel to more well. Take my  route that takes you through a lot of different stores from food to clothes shopping and even seeing some beautiful areas along the way. This route is from City Tech to the A, C, and G subway station at Hoyt and Schermerhorn street. You never know when you’re going to have to get off of the train at a different stop,. Discover new places and try to get out of that well known crowded area of Jay Street MetroTech.

Once you exit City Tech, take a right and walk down Jay Street. You’ll be walking through that crowded area of Jay Street MetroTech. Crossing the street as you see the Marriott building you’ll notice a plaza area. This area isn’t usually too crowded, so you can take a nice stroll through it. You can sit down at the benches in this area if you want to relax or if you’ve gotten yourself a snack or you can sit outside at one of the tables from the store you went to. This is just another extra detour if you would like to appreciate some art work and beauty around your area and even find a place to eat. After this you can continue your journey, walking back to the subway station and walking down Jay Street once again.

You can find your happiness if you take a new route, even with the smallest change.

Project #4: Directions

For my route I chose to take the A train at a different stop than normal on my way back home. I went one stop down which was Hoyt & Schermerhorn street. I attempted to do this walk on Monday, but ended up doing it on Tuesday because it was pouring rain. The weather was a lot more dry which I prefer no rain, but it was also very cold, if it were Spring that would be better weather for me to chose to take a walk in. I did my walk after class which was around 2:15. What guided me was the stores around the area and also finding a less crowded area. I was curious to see what places I could find on my walk.

To start I walked to Jay Street Metro Tech where the A, C, F, and R trains are and I kept walking down that street. Jay Street is pretty much always crowded and loud. There’s either the sound of construction or people rambling and moving about. I walked across the street from the Mariott into where you’ll find Five Guys, Chipotle, and many more food stores. There’s a lot of places to sit here and just relax. It also looks very beautiful at this time of year because it’s decorated for Christmas! There’s also a huge Christmas tree right across from Five Guys. Behind the tree you’ll see a work of art that changes every few months. What I found that looked very cool is the art itself but also the trees around it all had no leaves and were in rows, it looked very cool! I then turned back to the A, C, and F subway station and continued walking down Jay Street. Once I walked past the scaffolding which was the area of the subway station, I noticed a lot more stores than when I had began walking. I was walking in a straight line for a while and Jay Street turned into Smith Street. It was still quite crowded but I wouldn’t say as much as the Jay Street area it was much busier there. With everyone rushing, the more you walk down the more it dies down to me.

Once I got to a block of Smith Street that had a car parking service on it I saw that Schermerhorn was on my left so I went that way. The parking service area isn’t hard to spot, you’ll see a bunch of cars and a giant sign that says “Park Fast”. I would say that block itself was very empty, which I liked because there weren’t anymore crowds. Once I was walking down Schermerhorn Street looking for the subway station, I noticed how much more calm the area was. It wasn’t because it had more trees or any of it’s nature aspects but more of the fact that there were less people there. That’s one of the keys that led my walk. Although if someone were doing this walk in the night I wouldn’t recommend that.

Right when I turned I also noticed on the side that I was on there was a giant building that seemed to be made of stone, while across the street there was a building made of mostly glass and metal. It looked like a juxtaposition and had caught my eye. On the side of the glass building, as I walked down I saw another car parking service while across the street there were more stores appearing, still being in stone buildings. As I walked down I saw more stores, there were some cafes and restaurants that caught my eye and I might try to go back to some day. After walking 2 blocks down I saw the subway station for the A, C, and G trains. Right next to it is a goodwill which also caught my attention, and I would probably go back there to visit that store too. During the entire walk down Schermerhorn street it was far less crowded and there was less noise. Even if it wasn’t a park, it still seemed more calm and very interesting to see the new places that I discovered.

Happiest Place in New York

A lot of my happy places are places that I’ve had personal memories at. One of them is the Javits Center because there’s always a lot of events there. For me, I went to Comic Con there this year and last year which was a lot of fun. It’s a happy and exciting place to me. I do also have a more calm place that I consider happy that I discovered recently around City Tech. It’s Brooklyn Bridge Park. The area is very calm, just standing or sitting there and watching the water and boats. The view is also amazing, you can see Manhattan straight across. You can also see the Statue of Liberty far in the distance. The area is just very calm and peaceful and that’s what makes it a happy place for me.

Fastest or Most Beautiful Route: Reflection

This article was very interesting to me. It discusses taking the fastest vs the most beautiful route to your destination, and what people would prefer. Also what people consider a beautiful route. They talk about an app that would give you the route to your destination, either the fastest or the most beautiful one. Since the app we now use usually only give us the fastest route. I did keep thinking that this didn’t matter because everyone has their own sense to what would be beautiful. But they id a survey that had two different pictures asking people which they considered more beautiful.

I’m not sure what I would chose because it depends on the situation. If I’m late or a bit early to class I’ll still go unless I’m an hour early, then I’ll take my time and maybe take a more scenic route. What I could say is a beautiful route is any calm areas where there aren’t many crowds, or in some cases an area can look very beautiful but also be very crowded. Walking through a park, any well known spots, or anywhere that there’s just a lot of nature is very calm and appealing to me.

Project #2 Reflection

I enjoyed this project because it involved walking out to a new place. It was really interesting to learn about juxtapositions. I really got to know areas near the school more. I thought finding overlapping New Yorks would be hard, but it wasn’t as hard as I thought. What I could improve more on the project is how I describe what I see by sight or any senses. I also need to improve on my quotes and showing how they support my essay’s thesis more, I might not have elaborated on them much in my essay.
