Week 1 Blogging

In the story of an hour and the jury of her peers, I sense these stories both describe very well what was the effect on women in early times. Mrs. Mallard obviously had never experienced freedom or individuality. As told in the story “There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it? She did not know; it was too subtle and elusive to name.” Then with the jury of her peers as I had described before in my comments; a person who deals with death of a close one in a nonchalant insensitive expression, usually has crossed the line of having enough and accepting that murder had to be done. Obviously something like this doesn’t happen overnight, but builds over time.Mrs. Mallard was obviously very unhappy and it showed with the clutter of her home. Because a woman during those times could not publically express discontent, it must have been hard on her. The bird was just the last straw. I also pointed out the two women who saw the bird decided to hide it from the men. That bird might have explained a lot to the prosecution and justice would have been served. And I really think that’s why the women took it (the bird). Because in their views justice was served. And also in their own way the regret of not being more of a friend to Mrs. Wright. This tells me that the women supported each other in those times, because as mention before their voice was not heard by the men who treated them as less than. In the story of an hour it was told that Mrs. Mallard did not loved her husband. “And yet she loved him–sometimes. Often she had not.” My guess is that marriages in those days were basically willed on by family, wealth, not dying old by yourself. Even today it is hard to find couples who stayed married. People today think only of their freedom and individuality, and would prefer that it is not hindered. It is nice to know that at least women have voices today and carry responsibility well in society.

Young Goodman Brown

I believe the story is written in third person due to the word usage “he” “she” and  what were the thoughts of Mr. Goodman Brown. In the story he states “poor little Faith! Thought he for his heart smite him (Goodman Brown) (p.7). Then “there may be a devilish Indian behind every tree, said Goodman Brown to himself”. This leads to a slight confusion weather. One is Goodman Brown speaking out loud? Two are these Goodman Brown’s thoughts?

A Rose for Emily

‘’A rose for Emily’’ is about a woman who killed her lover, isolated herself and lived with her lover’s corpse for the rest of her life in her little own world. I believe that the root cause of this horrible tragedy is Mr. Grierson. Miss Emily was raised under her father’s strict rules and values that she did not seem to have any closed friends and any socialization through these years. When she grew up she was also prevented to see or date to any young men in town from her father because he thought that no one in town was suit for his daughter.  Therefore, for Emily, her father and her house was her own world and there was nothing else in her life. I think that prevent her ability to adapt or accept the change later in her life and she lived in her own little world. That is why she couldn’t accept her father’s dead and refused to bury him, refused to pay taxes, refused to fasten house numbers and attach mailbox. After her father died, she met Mrs. Barron, a construction worker who came to town for paving the sidewalks and was also the only man that she met in her life beyond her father. After she dreamed and planned about her wedding, she figured out that Mr. Barron was about to abandon her. She couldn’t lose her loved one again like her father dead body was forced to bury, so she poisoned Mr. Barron and secretly keep his dead body in house with her. I believe she has been isolated since she was young and her house is her own world and I think this is why she wanted to live with her loved one in her little own world either alive or not.

Bier

Bier   noun

  1. a table or platform on which a coffin or dead body is placed at a funeral

A Rose for Emily, Part 5 Paragraph 2

“they held the funeral on the second day, with the town coming to look at Miss Emily beneath a mass of bought flowers, with the crayon face of her father musing profoundly above the bier and the ladies sibilant and macabre; and the very old men…”

Reading the story, I figured the word bier meant mantle,  this certainly paints a different picture.

Self Introductory

My name is Christina Ming. I am a nursing student at New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn, NY. My husband Richard also graduated as associate degree in Telecommunication from NYCCT in 1995. The NYCCT is good place to attend the nursing course in New York City. I feel very comfortable to attend the classes at NYCCT because the professors and students are very friendly and very understandable to each others. It is a multicultural place to study and meet various ethnic in one place. I was born and raised in Myanmar which is a country close to Thailand. English is my second language and it takes a long trip for me to be able to read and write English, but I am trying my best to learn and study my courses to graduate my degree.

When I was in my native country Myanmar, I used to assist and volunteer at my uncle’s clinic on my free time. At that time, I was very interesting in healthcare related field. But my dream and opportunity never come true to attend the college because of financial and other situations have prevented me. Now I have the opportunity to learn and study what I was interested in. Thanks to the American education system which gives individual to choice what they are interesting in college. I have fulfilled my dream to become a nurse in the healthcare field.

I worked as full time nurse at one of the Brooklyn hospital, NY and attending as part time student to complete my Bachelor degree In Nursing. I understand it is not an easy task but I am satisfied with what I want to do and to accomplish my ambitious. I always like to care people when they are ill or physically or mentally disable and help them to be able to function themselves and I enjoy learning from them that I don’t know.

Changing the content text of story to fit the modern day is acceptable but should not have to lose the meaning of the story. Even Genius.com accidently or intentionally switch N word to R word would have different meaning to readers. It was understandable that N word is very offensive to mention in any form and it is racism in our society now. You may see on the television that some show has to alter to fix the general public view on television. Similarly, if Genius.com intentionally switch the word and put a notation at R word that some wording have been changed from original version. If it is no longer under copyright.  I believe the readers will understand what it means.

Discussing “A Jury of Her Peers” and “The Story of An Hour”

In life the most stress is felt when you are faced with sudden experiences that shape the world around you in one instant. In the story The Story of An Hour by Kate Chopin, Mrs Mallard was faced with this same experience. The story starts with the “death” of Mr. Mallard and proceeded with the heart breaking news being told to his sick wife. Through many troubling thoughts Mrs. Mallard came to the acceptance that life was a free flowing stream and the only way to avoid drowning is to simply flow along with it. As a new way of life presented it self Mrs. Mallard realized that as a life ended a new one starts. This thought then became her drive for the years to come. Suddenly, just as fast as her new foundation was build, it was shattered by the sight of the “beloved” husband. Not only was she speechless but also breathless. Mrs. Mallard was not the only one, the story A Jury Of Her Peers By Susan Glaspell  shows how sudden experiences could have extreme rippling affects. This story revolves around the case of an unknown murder where a wife is left in the hot seat. As the story starts, a sheriff by the name of Mr. Peters has the opportunity to work on the case of the murder of a man by the name of Mr. Wright. As the tedious task of clue hunting went on through out the story, the wives that were brought to the seen played the most crucial role. As the story draws to its end, Mrs. Hale, a close friend of Mrs. Wright brought the twisted truth to light which stemmed from a “twisted” altercation between Mr. And Mrs. Wright which may leave her incarcerated.

In both cases, it can be said that both women over reacted but was their actions morally justified? Mrs. Mallard reaction to her husbands death may have seems unusual but in her perspective, she was trapped. Once her husband died she was now able to see the steal cage that has been surrounding her life and finally made the attempt to flee when the doors suddenly closed. When it comes to the case of Mrs. Wright, it seemed as if she was not only trapped by an controlling man but forced into a cage that she was simply too large to fit in. After years of mental torture she finally broke free by ending her husbands life. Both women faced struggles in two unique forms but to judge them in a negative fashion does not seem fitting. Instead in my view, they were pushed to take justice in their own hands and should be seen as individuals that finally got to their breaking points.

A Small Section Of My Life

Hey class. I’m not as motivated as the next guy to add too much personal information while knowing this can be publicly viewed, but as far as the things you should know goes. My name is Gavin Young, I was born Brooklyn, N.Y. but raised in Jamaica, W.I. While growing up in Jamaica I acquired my education from Meadowbrook Prep, the equivalent of an elementary school in the United States. I was well disciplined and well behaved while being raised in a family with strong religious beliefs. On my journey throughout the years as a youth I got drawn to many passions which involved Astronomy, Engineering, and ideas of futuristic innovations. This was mainly caused by the exposure to many of my family’s professions and the sharing of thoughts of future goals with the kids in the neighborhood. In the case of my family, I can say it is fairly large with relatives scattered across various countries but as far as close siblings goes, I was raised with my only sister on my mother’s side.

After graduating Meadowbrook, I left Jamaica to expand on my education in the United States where I started Middle School. While there I experience another world that seemed much simpler than the one I knew before. With this perception of my new environment, I excelled academically and later moved on to High School. In the Brooklyn Academy of Science and the Environment High School, also known as BASE, I faced new challenges that pushed me to realize that anything can be done with effort and critical thinking. I later joined a class called Science Research where I was mentored and pushed to write tedious papers which also required a research paper due at the end of my senior year. My research paper was based on religious and superstition while analyzing their correlations. The option to stop was given each year of course, but where is the lesson in giving up? This class later gave me skills I would not have acquired otherwise and I’m grateful I made the choice to stay. With that being said, I view this particular class as my most important decision and high school experience.

Graduating High School gave me a great feeling of accomplishment. Even though I stumbled on many bumps along the way, it was a great experience nonetheless. Even so, I still felt empty inside because I was a part of an environmental school when my passions demanded tech, science and discovery. What made this feeling even more noticeable was my hobbies, which involved countless hours of watching Science programs, Reading Science based book (I recommend reading The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, it shows many possibilities of human innovation that I find fascinating and plausible) and keeping up with tech and scientific breakthroughs while I was stuck checking Ph. levels. My passions which have been manifesting in my mind since I was a young child finally drove me to apply to a college with a strong tech program but convenient enough where I could still be home (Brooklyn). I was later enrolled as a student of The New York City College of Technology, where I currently study Computer Engineering Technology and also where I started my new journey. To be continue…

Interesting Title

Hello, my name is Eli Shtauber. I was born and raised in Brooklyn NY.  What else would you like to know?

I come from a large close family and always had my siblings to talk to and to play with. Five years ago my parents and younger siblings moved out of the state, and I now have an apartment with a couple of roommates. It’s tough not being close to my family (and doing my own laundry/cooking/cleaning :/ ), but I try to go visit whenever I can.

I finished high school in 2007 and decided not to go to college. There are plenty of things I am good at and figured not to spend the time in school. I worked as an  electrician for a couple of years, and learned a lot. It was a decent job but I wasn’t enjoying it. I had a couple of other jobs, and in each I gained many useful skills, but I never found something I really enjoyed. In the summer of 2011 (I had just quit working as a bus mechanic) I heard a friend talking about the mechanical engineering program at City Tech. He had taken a tour of the school and told me all about it. I looked into the field  some more, and was enrolled for the fall semester shortly afterwards.

I love to read (!) and especially like Stephen King and Lee Child. I’m currently reading Christine by SK. I enjoy listening to music and usually have something playing in the background.  Another hobby of mine is working on old cars. I bought, fixed, drove, and then sold a couple of cars. I am currently rebuilding an antique electric car, and I hope to use the machines in the engineering department like the 3d printer and cnc machine to make a couple of parts I’m having trouble finding.

Anyway, hope we have a great semester, and hope we get to read some great stories.
