triumph

triumph – ( noun ) a victory or conquest by or as if by military force

i found this definition on https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/triumph

i found this word in the story of an hour “There was a feverish triumph in her eyes, and she carried herself unwittingly like a goddess of Victory.”

now knowing the definition helped because at first I didn’t understand and you might understand from the text but the definition helps you understand how strong that feeling was and how impacting it was. It just helps get a deeper understand of the word

Implore

Imploring – to call upon in supplication

i found this definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/imploring

I found this word in The story of an hour “Josephine was kneeling before the closed door with her lips to the keyhole, imploring for admission.”

The definition helps understand the sentence because imploring for admission is hard to understand if you don’t know it. So now know that it’s to call upon supplication then you’ll understand the feeling and reasoning behind why she is doing what she is doing. This can help the reader to know what she’s doing. At first you can get a feel of what it going on but overall I believe that the definition helps

ardent

ardent (Adjective) – : characterized by warmth of feeling typically expressed in eager zealous support or activity ardent proponents of the bill an ardent admirer ardent fans

I found this definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ardent

i found this word in A hunger artist “and the joy of life streamed with such ardent passion from his throat that for the onlookers it was not easy to stand the shock of it.”

the definition really helps because it shows the warmth of support and joy that he got. He shows how shocked he way and how amazing it was and how he couldn’t stand the shock of it. The word gives it more feel.

apparatus

apparatus (noun)  -a set of materials or equipment designed for a particular use

I found his definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/apparatus

i found this word in the Hunge Artist “ A large circus with its enormous traffic in replacing and recruiting men, animals, and apparatus can always find a use for people at any time, even for a hunger artist, provided of course that he does not ask too much, and in this particular case anyhow it was not only the artist who was taken on but his famous and long- known name as well”

now knwoing the definition definitely helped because he’s gathering things together but you wouldn’t know what those things are unless you knew the definition  he was getting his materials ready for something he needs

vigil

vigil – (noun) the act of keeping awake at times when sleep is customary; also : a period of wakefulness

i found this definition at https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/vigil

I found this word in the Text the hunger artist.

Of course there were people who argued that this breakfast was an unfair attempt to bribe the watchers, but that was going rather too far, and when they were invited to take on a night’s vigil without a breakfast, merely for the sake of the cause, they made themselves scarce, although they stuck stubbornly to their suspicions.“

Knowing this definition helps understand what they are talking about because a nights vigil could have been anything but now I know that it’s a sleepless time period

I found this definition on https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/nasturtium

i found this word in our new story Quicksand Nella  Larsen “on the shining brass bowl crowded with many-colored nasturtiums beside her on the low table, and on he low table, and on the oriental silk which covered the stool at her slim feet.“

K

Now I understand what was in her bowl. It kinda of gives us a feel of the type of person she is because she has bright colorful flowers in her house.

Tapestry

  1. Tapestry -( noun) a heavy handwoven reversible textile used for hangings, curtains, and upholstery and characterized by complicated pictorial designs

i found this definition on https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/tapestry

I found this word in our new book Quicksand by Nella Larsen “In vivid green and gold negligee and glistening brocaded mules, deep sunk in the big high-backed chair, against whose dark tapestry her sharply cut face, with skin like yellow satin, was distinctly outlined she was—to use a hackneyed word—attractive.”

now I have a visual and a better understanding of tapestry. It can be considered a design that is put on your wall like a curtain and it has details and designs all over

Impresario

Impresario

Noun

– the promoter, manager, or conductor of an opera or concert company.

I found this definition on https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/impresario

I found this word in The Hunger artist by Franz Kafka

“ The impresario came forward without a word—the music made talking impossible—raised his arms over the hunger artist, as if inviting heaven to look upon its work here on the straw, this unfortunate martyr (something the hunger artist certainly was, only in a completely different sense), grabbed the hunger artist around his thin waist, in the process wanting with his exaggerated caution to make people believe that here he had to deal with something fragile, and handed him over—not without secretly shaking him a little, so that the hunger artist’s legs and upper body swung back and forth uncontrollably—to the women, who had in the meantime turned as pale as death. ”

i has no idea was impresario meant so reading this I didn’t totally understand who this man was and why exactly he was doing what he was but now that I know the definition I get why he was there and why he did was he did. This word is a great vocabulary substitute because it’s not commonly used.

i found this definition on https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/calceolaria

I found this word in The Cottagette

I overall had an idea of this word being a plant but I didn’t know exactly what it was and how it looked but now that I learned where its from and how it looks I get a better understanding.

Non-romantic relationships (group discussion)

In my group discussion we talked about the non-romantic relationships in both stories. The yellow wallpaper really stood out for us  because there was a lot of connections in that story.  What really stood out to us is that the john’s wife  never was given a name. We had some disagreements about whether or not her name is Jane.  Some believe that her name is Jane, others believe that Jane is the name of the woman in the wall, some believe that it was a typo for John’s sisters name Jennifer, I believe that Charles made a great point about how when someone is unidentified they call them Jane Doe. We made many connections with John’s wife becoming one with the wallpaper and thats exactly how she is. A women trapped all day long, unable to express emotions and very tied down.  Due to the fact that she was unable to express her feelings  because then everybody think she’s crazy, she starts to connect and become one with this wallpaper.  She starts to rip the wallpaper off-the-wall and she bites into it because she feels like if that wallpaper stays up there that somehow she’s going to get trapped into it.  She does not care what’s going to happen if she does it she doesn’t care that her husband fainted, she’s just going to use him as a step stool to rip off more of the wallpaper. Unfortunately, the Yellow wallpaper was so interesting with all these meanings and connects that my group did not get to talking about the relationship in The Cottagette so my group members have a great comment opportunity to talk about the non romantic relationships in that story and also they can state who they believe is Jane in the Story the yellow wallpaper.
