Week 2 Follow-Up:

Hi everyone,

It was great to see the strong start in our last class, and I’m glad many of you began your symmetry and geometry drawings.

This is a reminder that we need to continue making progress toward your final linework. For our next class, you must bring all your drafting tools and have already started and completed your Symmetry and Geometry drawings at 3/32″ = 1′-0″ scale on vellum paper with the title block.

I’ve confirmed that 18″x24″ vellum will be acceptable for your final drawings. Any final drawings submitted on other materials rather than vellum will not be accepted. If you already purchased 36″x24″ vellum, that’s fine as well.

The example of the 18″x24″ drawing with the required title block for your reference. see below

In addition, don’t forget your assigned reading and notes on:

  • Means of Egress

Looking forward to seeing your continued progress on Thursday.

February 4th – Week 02

In today’s class we going over the following:

  • Symmetry and Geometry drawings
  • Assign Reading groups
  • Submission workflow
  • Reading #1 – The Building and The Building Systems
  • Methods of drafting (Scale, Line weight, Text scale, and Title block)
  • Students will start drawing title block and their 3/32″ = 1′-0″ Symmetry and Geometry

Reading #1The Building and The Building Systems.

Scale: https://www.nycctfab.com/_files/ugd/e5d365_35a5d5da73b14a8984e56aebf8bb5ddd.pdf

Imperial is used mainly in the U.S. and measures in inches, feet, pounds, and gallons. It’s based on irregular units (12 inches = 1 foot).

Metric is used globally and based (millimeters, meters, kilograms, liters), making it easier for conversions and calculations.

Text Scale:

In architectural drawings, the text height should be scaled to remain legible when plotted, regardless of the drawing scale. The following are standard printed text heights used:

  • 1/8″ – Typically used for general notes, room names, and titles on large-scale drawings (1/8″ = 1′-0″).
  • 1/4″ – Often used for drawing titles or key annotations that need to stand out. (1/4″ = 1′-0″).
  • 1/2″ – Reserved for section titles, sheet titles, or very prominent text that must be easily read. (1/2″ = 1′-0″).

Lineweight :

2H & H: Harder leads that produce light, fine lines.

Used for construction lines, guides, and less prominent elements.

F & HB: Medium hardness leads that provide balanced tones.
Used for main outlines, general detailing, and readable text.

B & 2B: Softer leads that give darker, bolder lines.
Ideal for section cuts, profile lines, and strong outlines.

Week 1 Follow-Up: Drawings, Readings & Prep

Hi everyone,

It was great meeting you all during our first class! I’m really looking forward to working with you this semester and seeing the great work we’ll create together.

Here are a few highlights for you to complete this weekend:

  1. Download all 16 pages of the Federal Hall drawing set.
  2. Print the set at 113% (Custom Scale) on 11″x17″ paper.
  3. Visit the Federal Hall building to become familiar with the space. This will make it easier to understand the drawings and translate them into your own work.

In our next class, we’ll begin drawing, so please remember to bring all your drafting tools and paper.

Assignment #1:

  • Use the cellar, first floor, and south elevation drawings to create a geometry and symmetry analysis on tracing paper.
  • Use a ruler and aim to be technical.
  • Understanding the geometry and symmetry will help you organize and draw your floor plans and elevations more effectively.
  • See below examples provided for guidance.

Reading Assignment:

  • From Building Construction Illustrated:
    • The Building
    • Building Systems
  • Read both short chapters before our next class. do not forget to take notes and sketches from your reading!

See you all on Thursday!
Hito Rodriguez

Assignment Submission

Dropbox will be the designated platform for submitting your weekly assignments and sketches throughout the semester. Each week, a new upload link will be shared, and your work must be submitted no later than the end of Thursday (11:59pm) following our class meeting.

Important: File Naming Standards
To ensure your work is properly reviewed and graded, you must follow the naming convention outlined below:

Format: FirstName_LastName_AssignmentName
Example: Hito_Rodriguez_SketchesNotes

Failure to follow the naming format may result in your work not being reviewed or graded.

All submitted assignments must be in PDF format.
No exceptions will be made for JPGs, PNGs, or any other file types.

Please ensure your sketches, notes, and any other required documentation are properly scanned or exported as PDFs before uploading.

Only one person from each group needs to upload the final presentation. However, please make sure that the title sheet clearly lists the full names of all students who participated in the group.

In-Class Activity: Getting to Know Each Other & Showing Our Skills

This activity is designed to help us get to know one another and also show the drawing skills you already have.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Find an Object: Look around inside or outside the classroom and pick an object that catches your attention. You might choose it because of its geometry, functionality, or appearance.
  2. Draw the Object (4 Views): Create four drawings of your object:
    • Top view
    • Elevation
    • Section
    • Axonometric
  3. Time: You will have 5 minutes to find your object, and 35 minutes to complete all 4 drawings.
  4. Pin-Up: When you’re done, find a spot on the wall and pin up your work.

Introductions

Along with your drawings, please introduce yourself to the class by sharing:

  • Something you really enjoy doing in your free time?
  • What you hope to get out of this class?
  • Where you see yourself in 10 years?

Finally, present the drawings you completed in the last 35 minutes and explain why you chose your object.

Get to Know Your Instructor

Hi, my name is Hito Rodriguez. I graduated from City Tech in 2016 with a B.Tech degree in Architecture and later earned my Master of Architecture from City College in 2022. Over the years, I’ve gained experience in many areas of the field — from landscape design and site planning, residential , commercial projects and interior design.

Some highlights of my career include contributing to The Peninsula, one of the largest affordable housing projects in the Bronx, and also having my graduate thesis work exhibited at the Queens Museum.

Currently, I’m a Project Manager, where I coordinate projects from start to finish, working closely with clients, New York City register architects, and construction teams.

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and experiences with all of you this semester!
