Reflection

One of the very first key concepts that I have learned in community nursing is that this field is very community based and population focused. It also emphasizes prevention and promotes client responsibility. This concept is very supported by my experience in the clinical setting at Kings County Hospital.  The clinical experience that I enjoyed the most thus far is my assignment to the women’s health clinic. I have always held a special interest in woman’s health/GYN/OB services so it always exciting to work with this population. This is also an area that involves a great deal of patient teaching that again correlates with the key concept relayed in the didactic setting of this community nursing class. This clinical setting experience allows for teaching about sexual and reproductive health and also stresses the importance of prevention. In woman health it is important to teach about the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancy. I have also learned about the importance of communicating with diverse groups within the community which is a reflection of cultural competency. Throughout this community nursing experience, I was able to grow on a personal and professional level. As part of my personal and professional growth, I have obtained an increased sensitivity to the economic and social variables that affect the delivery of health care within the community. Even within my experiences outside of the clinical setting, my experiences with personal relationships have proven that the economy plays an important part in the delivery of health care. One primary example is the hesitancy of the community members to seek health care when health issues arise because of limited or no health insurance. It is also very important to educate the support members of patients because some members of the community actually depend on the support of other family members to maintain their health.
