Week 3: That Triumphant Day

The interview with Hearst Magazine got cancelled (last minute I might add) because they e-mailed me saying that the position is now filled and I should reapply for the spring semester. I guess it just wasnā€™t meant to be, but I really wanted to intern there because it would have given me the experience I need for future magazine design jobs. Luckily, last week I applied to several jobs on the website LookSharp.com and the majority of the companies got back to me.

Next week, I will be starting my internship for a startup company called Mdrn. ResidentialĀ on 261 Madison Ave. in Manhattan. The Design DirectorĀ there, Mr. Eyal Itzahki contacted me via e-mail and scheduled an interview with me that same week. Turns out we had a lot in common; He went to Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and I went to Fashion Industries High school, which is the high school to the College of FIT. We both started out as Fashion Majors and transitioned to graphic design and we both love Korean food.

We went over my online portfolio and he was really impressed with my work. He showed me his work and the work he has done so far for Mdrn. Residential and I was so surprised how different it was from mine, but still similar in the techniques we used to achieve our designs. I started to get nervous because his designs were so simple and clean and he expressed to me that their clients like things simple and straight forward and organized in a curtain way.

Iā€™m use to using a lot of colors, especially highly saturated colors and Iā€™m use to designing for clients around my age range so I knew this was going to be a real life experience for me. After he gave me a tour of the offices and how to get around the other startup companies who sees an intern and immediately remembers they have dry cleaning that needs to be picked up. He told me that it is most important that I do notĀ do anything for anyone without consulting him first because there are people there who will try to take advantage. I was happy he said this because it assured me that he is looking out for my best interest.

I am really excited about my first internship in a corporate office and I know itā€™s going to be challenging. He said I will be able to meet everyone else on my first day next week and there will be some paperwork he will have to go over with me, so weā€™ll see how that goes.
