Proper ethics of a MONK

Ethics is defined as the set of theory of moral principles. There are 5 types of ethics Deontology ethics, Virtue ethics, Utilitarian ethics, Feminist ethics, and Global ethics. Deontology is a set of rules that assess our choices. Virtue Ethics addresses the important question what kind of person do I want to be? Utilitarian Ethics is the moral right action is the action that produces the most good. Feminist ethics is ethics that value non-masculine traits. Global Ethics is about equality for all. In the story “A Good Fall,” by Ha Jin, I ask myself what types of ethics does each character follow. I am also going to go into details of each character’s important scenes and determine their ethics. Then I will be talking about Ganchin’s gothic actions. I will also start off by giving a small summary of the story.

The story “A Good Fall,” by Ha jin, published by Pantheon books in 2009, takes place in Flushing Queens New York where we meet the main character Ganchin who teaches Kong fu and is a monk for the Gaolin temple. Some of the other characters in this story that play a role are Master Zong, Cindy, and the owner of Teng’s Garden. We learn that Ganchin is fired by Master Zong because his visa expired, and Master Zong refuses to pay Ganchin his salary. Ganchin needs the money to pay off his debt back in China and threatens to kill himself if Master Zong does pay his salary. Master Zong kidnaps Ganchin and tries to send him back to China but Ganchin escapes and makes his way to Tang’s Garden where the owner tries to convince from committing suicide. Ganchin jumps off a building and survives and the whole Chinese community realizes that Master Zong is a fraud.

I will be discussing the following major scenes in “A Good Fall,” and discussing the characters ethics. The first major scene is when Ganchin is fired we learn what type of person Master Zong is. The second Major scene that I want to focus on is when Ganchin goes to Teng’s Garden and meets the owner in which he tries to convince Ganchin from committing suicide. The third major scene is when Ganchin jumps off the building and breaks his legs when can determine that Ganchin’s ethic has changed as the story goes along.

The first major scene is when Ganchin is fired from his Job because his visa expired, and we learn that Master Zong is refusing to pay Ganchin his salary even though they have a contract. In this first scene I will focus on Master Zong ethics. Master Zong is the master for the Gaolin temple and has a “wife” although he’s not married because he swore to not take a wife when he became a monk. Master Zong has a brand-new BMW and a brand-new house in Long Island. Master Zong told Ganchin “From now on you’re on your own, and you must move out tomorrow. I don’t care where you go” (345). Therefore, Master Zong doesn’t follow the rules of being a monk because he breaks so many rules like not showing compassion the Ganchin and not paying him what he owes to him. The type of ethics that Master Zong follows is Utilitarian ethics because he doesn’t care about being a good person as long as he’s making money and living good.

The second major scene is when Ganchin arrives to Teng’s Garden and asks the owner to pass along a message to Master Zong in Ganchin tells the Owner “Tell him to say prayers and make offerings for soul tomorrow before sunrise” (353). Basically, implying that he’s going to die tomorrow in which the owner seems puzzled by his request. In this scene I will focus on Teng’s Garden Owner’s ethics towards Ganchin. The Owner decided to listen to Ganchin’s problems in order to hear his pain/struggles and try to convince him not to commit suicide by telling him to think about all the good things in life. The owner tells Ganchin “Young Brother you shouldn’t think like this You mustn’t give up so easily” (354). Basically, telling him that giving up isn’t the best thing to do because it won’t resolve to anything and that he should continue fighting for what is owed to him. The owner also shows his kindness when he offers to make Ganchin a meal and not charge him for it. Ironically, this would have been Ganchin’s last meal if he were to have died from jumping off the building. The type of ethics that owner of Teng’s Garden is Virtue ethics because he tries to persuade Ganchin to not killing himself by telling him “to think about all the good things in life” (355). By doing so the owner asks himself what sort person I should be when he’s listening to Ganchin’s troubles because he could have easily not given any care about a Ganchin’s troubles and not provide him with free food but instead he decided to be a good person and try talk Ganchin out of doing something bad.

The Third major scene is when Ganchin jumps off the building and his ethics changed from the beginning of the story. So, let start off by talking about Ganchin ethics in the beginning of the story and then his ethics in the end of the story. In the beginning of the story Ganchin follows Deontology ethic because he follows the rules of being a monk. Ganchin never has a girlfriend or gets married and Ganchin never has eaten any types of meats because monks need to be vegetarians. When Cindy jokily said, “If worse comes to worse, you should consider marrying a woman, a us citizen” (346) and Ganchin’s response is that he can’t because he’s a monk is a prime example of him following the rules of being a monk. Now let us talk about Ganchin’s ethics changing as the story goes along. Ganchin’s ethics change to Virtue Ethic because he starts to question what sort of person I should be. Ganchin begins to ask himself how he’s going to be able to live in America without knowing English. When Ganchin moved in with a “friend” named Fanku he started to eat meats like pork and seafood because that’s what Fanku would bring back left over from when Fanku when go to work. Therefore, Ganchin really didn’t have much of a choice because if he didn’t eat what Fanku brings him then he won’t eat anything that day. So, he had to decide if he wanted to starve or eat meat even though he was a monk wasn’t allowed to eat meat. Next, he starts to question his worth of living because being a monk and working for the temple is the only thing he know how to do. Then he goes to Master Zong and threatens to kill himself if he doesn’t pay his salary. Then he goes through with his plan to commit suicide and jumps off a building and breaks his legs. Ganchin jumps off the building because he feels like a disappointment because he wasn’t able to send money back home in China to help pay off debts. In the end of the story one can assume that Cindy and Ganchin get together therefore breaking another rule of being a monk. When Ganchin tells Cindy that no other temple will ever take him as a monk anymore Cindy tells Ganchin “That also means you’re free to date a girl” (357) Ganchin replies with “Well, I hope that’s something I can learn” (357). Therefore, Ganchin realizes he can’t be a monk anymore and question his future of what kind of person he can be. Ganchin is basically reinventing himself and moving away from being a monk and having a normal life.

A gothic action is defined as doing the forbidden, acting irrational and/or going against prohibition. Ganchin begins to act irrational after confronting Master Zong about being fired from the Gaolin temple. Ganchin threatens to kill himself if Master Zong doesn’t pay him what is owed to him. Ganchin tells Master Zong “Master you’ve pushed me to the edge of a cliff—I have no way out now and may have to follow Ganping’s example” (349) Ganping being a monk that killed himself because of unpaid salary. The reason this is an irrational act is because an average person wouldn’t threaten to kill themselves after not being instead, they would threaten to sue. But Ganchin is hoping that by saying this Master Zong would have a change of heart and pay Ganchin his money. The second irrational act that Ganchin does is when he jumps off the building breaking his legs. This is an irrational act is because you don’t gain anything if you kill yourself and, in the end, if Ganchin were to kill himself Master Zong still wouldn’t pay Ganchin anything because he won’t be alive and there would be no one to prove that Master Zong owes money to Ganchin. Also, he knows that nothing will probably come from this if he were to have killed himself because when Ganping killed himself for the same reason Ganchin wants to kill himself there was no positive result that came out of that for Ganping. Master Zong wasn’t held response and the media never knew the real reason why Ganping killed himself. But In the end, everything worked out for Ganchin as Master Zong was exposed for being a bad monk that doesn’t pay his employees.

Inconclusion I discussed the important main character in “A Good fall,” by Ha Jin, and their decisions in which I discuss the characters ethics. I also discussed the charters important scenes and Ganchin’s gothic actions.

Coffeehouse #5

My favorite story is “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin because it showed us how some immigrants are taken advantage of, for example in the story Master Zong doen’t pay Ganchin his salary because his visa expired. Some of the other characters in this story that play a role are Master Zong, Cindy, Fanku, the owner of Teng’s Garden. The main character in the story is Ganchin who is a monk for a Gaolin temple and teaches Kung fu. Master Zong is a Monk who doesn’t follow the rules of being a monk because he is married and has a fancy car. Cindy is a flight attendant and is friends with Ganchin and tries to help Ganchin by trying to convince him to stay at her place. When Ganchin is fired and is forced to move out of the temple he moves in with a friend named Fanku. A major decision that Ganchin does is he goes back to the temple and threatens to kill himself if Master Zong doesn’t pay his salary. The first important scene is when Ganchin goes to the restaurant after being kidnapped by Master Zong and getting advice from the owner to go through with killing himself. The second important scene is when Ganchin jumps off a building and breaks his leg. The type of ethics that Ganchin follows is deontology ethics because he follows the rules of being a monk and doesn’t get married and is a vegetarian. Although his Ethics change as the story goes along because he stops being a vegetarian and eats seafood and in the end of the story one can only assume that Cindy and Ganchin get together. The type of ethics Master Zong follows is utilitarian ethics because he doesn’t care about being a good person as long as he’s making money. The type of ethics that owner of Teng’s Garden is Virtue ethics because he tries to persuade Ganchin to not killing himself by telling him “to think about all the good things in life”.

Cruelty and Compassion

Cruelty is defined as the pleasure of causing pain which is what gothic literature is all about. In the stories “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” by Gabriel Marquez and “A Hunger Artist” by Franz Kafka are very similar in terms of getting treated very poorly, and being socially distanced from society but they also have a difference in which one get compassion towards the end of the story. I will also go over the use of paradox in these stories and the change in the focal point of the narration.

“A very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is about an old man who has wings, is kept in a cage to be profited off by Pelayo and Elisenda. “A Hunger Artist” is about an artist that is mistreated by Impresario and joins the circus and is forgotten about and later dies from fasting longer than necessary.

The Two character that I will be comparing are the old man and the hunger artist who both are not given names to by their author. Both hunger artist and the old man are cruel entertainment for the people of the villages because in the “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” the old man is kept in a cage where People from all over come to see the old man and Elisenda and Pelayo charge 5 cent fee. In the “Hunger Artist” the artist is fasting in a cage where people from all over the world would come and see him. The hunger artist and the old man were both experienced by cruelty from the people that they were entertaining. In the “hunger artist” the cruelty to the hunger artist was that the butchers that would have to watch him over night would turn their back on him so that he would steal a bite to eat which annoyed the artist because it made it unpleasant for him. A quote from “ A Hunger Artist” that describes the annoyance the artist was feeling “often groups of night watchers who were very lax in carrying out their duties and deliberately huddled together in a retired corner to play cards with great absorption, obviously intending to give the hunger artist the chance of a little refreshment” (Kafka 2) he had so much pride in his work that he didn’t want people thinking he was faking his fast so he decided to sing so that the butchers would know he wasn’t eating and breaking his fast. The old man also faced cruelty from the crowd when they started to poke him, tried to get him to eat, burned hi side, and threw stones at him. A quote from “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” that showed the cruelty “the cripples pulled out feathers to touch their defective parts with, and even the most merciful threw stones at him, trying to get him to rise so they could see him standing”(Marquez 2). The old man would just sit there doing nothing all day so the people would attempt to hurt him in-order to get him to do something.

A contrast between the two characters is the compassion they received from the people that looked after them. In the “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” the old man received compassion from Pelayo and Elisenda when the winter came and the chicken hen was destroyed Pelayo let the old man live in their shed and would bring him a blanket to keep him warm. A quote from “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” that shows Elisenda relieved that the old man was finally able to go back to where he came from. Although she was relieved that the old man was leaving because of how much the man annoyed her, they still showed compassion by letting him stay with them until he was ready to go even though they weren’t profiting from him anymore “Elisenda let out a sigh of relief, for herself and for him, when she watched him pass over the last houses, holding himself up in some way with the risky flapping of a senile vulture”(Marquez 4). In “A Hunger Artist” the artist did not get any compassion from Impresario when he stopped the 40-day fasting. Impresario would first let a doctor in the cage to determine the artist condition and then Impresario would announce it to the audience with a megaphone. Two women are chosen from audience to help the artist from the cage and then is forced fed in front of the audience. Another lack of compassion that the hunger artist received was from the circus he joined after leaving Impresario. The circuit forgot about the hunger artist and was only noticed when the circus overseer looks at his cage and notices he is near death and after he dies quickly replaced by a young panther. The lack of compassion he received from the circus caused his death because no would go over to his cage to check on him because he was forgotten about.

The focal point of the narration alters reader sympathy in “A Hunger Artist” throughout the story because we feel bad for the artist in terms of lack of social connection he received from the audience. The artist would voluntarily enter a cage to fast for 40 days so that he can get try to impress the audience which shows the lack of social communication he has. A quote that proves that we wanted approval from the audience ““I always wanted you to admire my fasting” (Kafka 4) is what was said by the artist. The neglection he received from the circus also shows how socially distance he was from society which might have played a role in his death in which he wanted to fast longer than 40 days to break his record so that people would be impressed by him.

The focal point of the narration alters reader sympathy in “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” in terms of socially distance. The old man is kept in a cage although people from all over come a see him they did so for their own needs. People harassed/harmed the old man to try to get his attention which he did not give them and I believe that he didn’t know how to speak to the people and that is why he didn’t say anything throughout the story. Since the angel could not speak, he might have felt distanced from people because they did not understand what he was. This made me sympathize for the old man because we can put ourselves in his situation and feel how awful that would be.

Paradox is a contradicting statement. In “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” the paradox is used in the third page “Elisenda shouted that it was awful living in that hell full of angels” (Marquez 3) Elisenda say this because she’s feels like she’s living a life as a nightmare while the old man lives with them and because the old man seems to be in so many places at the same time in their house. They treated the old man as a creature that came from hell when he is an angel. Pelayo and Elisenda instead of praising the old man for being an angel they commit sins by locking him in a cage and profiting from him. In “A hunger Artist” paradox is used when the artist seems happier inside the cage rather than outside. I say this because when he was in the cage he was doing what he loves and that was fasting to please other with entertainment but whenever he was outside the cage he was being forced fed by Impresario and being humiliated in front of the crowd.

Inconclusion the old man and the hunger artist are very similar very similar and different in their own respective ways. Both the old man and the hunger artist were faced with cruelty from the people that were supposed to look after them and they also faced cruelty from the audience that they were entertaining. Paradox is used in both stories to contradict a statement. They both had a focal point to show us how socially distance they felt from society so sympathize for both the characters. The old man never spoke in the story therefore we assume he doesn’t understand their language and the hunger artist is neglected and tries to receive attention by breaking his record number of days fasting.

I will also go over the events in the stories fall under Todorov’s term marvelous and uncanny and the use of paradox in these stories and the change in the focal point of the narration.

A quick summary of “A very Old Man with Enormous Wings” is about a human like creature is found weak and struggling to get up. The old man has wings, and some people believe him to be an angel. The old man is kept in a cage to be profited off by Pelayo and Elisenda. The old man gets healthy and flies away. A quick summary of “A Hunger Artist” is about an artist that voluntarily enters a cage for 40 days to fast in front of people. The Artist is mistreated by Impresario and their partnership ends. The artist joins the circus and is forgotten and later dies from fasting longer than necessary.

A quote from “ A Hunger Artist” that describes the annoyance the artist was feeling “often groups of night watchers who were very lax in carrying out their duties and deliberately huddled together in a retired corner to play cards with great absorption, obviously intending to give the hunger artist the chance of a little refreshment” (page 2) he had so much pride in his work that he didn’t want people thinking he was faking his fast so he decided to sing so that the butchers would know he wasn’t eating and breaking his fast.

A quote from “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” that shows the compassion that the old man received from Elisenda “Elisenda let out a sigh of relief, for herself and for him, when she watched him pass over the last houses, holding himself up in some way with the risky flapping of a senile vulture” one morning the old man was attempting to fly but couldn’t get the grip of the air but finally managed to fly and Elisenda was relief for the old man that was finally able to go back to where he came from.

The focal point of the narration alters reader sympathy in “A Hunger Artist” throughout the story we learn about how the artist fasts and is mistreated by Impresario, we the reader feel sorry for the artist at the end of the story because he dies and gives us a shocking twist that he only fasted because he couldn’t find any food he liked. The Artist neglected by society but only wanting to be appreciated by the people that would come see him. Then when he apologized and said “I always wanted you to admire my fasting” made me feel like his believe of his purpose in life was just to be entertainment and only wanted in return was for everyone to be proud of his work.

The focal point of the narration alters reader sympathy in “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” because the old man was harassed by the people and some people did not believe he was an angel. Even though some people did not believe he was an angel and more a human, no one came forward and tried to free him from the chicken hen and no one tried to stop Elisenda and Pelayo from profiting from there misdeed. This made me sympathy for the old man as he really does not have much of a choice since he is weak/hurt but to sit there and let them mistreat him.

Paradox is a contradicting statement. In “A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings” the paradox is used in the third page “Elisenda shouted that it was awful living in that hell full of angels” Elisenda say this because the old man seems to be in so many places at the same time in their house. They treat the old man as a creature that came from hell when he is an angel.

Todorov term Marvelous is used in “A very Old Man with Enormous Wings” because the old man may look human like but has damaged wings therefore making him an angel. Marvelous is defined as not possible on earth therefore this story makes it Marvelous because we have never seen an actual angel on earth.

Todorov term Uncanny is used in “A Hunger Artist” because there are people that work for circus and do thing that seem impossible. Also, there is such a thing called Guinness world record where people break records by doing incredible things. Uncanny is defined as a closet to reality therefore this story makes it uncanny because we have seen people try to attempt things that seem impossible and sometimes dying from it.

Virtual Coffeehouse#2

“A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” and “The house of Asterion” they both have similar gothic elements mysterious character. In the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” has a mysterious character show up at the sea coast village where Pelayo finds an old man with wings and his neighbor believes it’s an angle seeking to take his sick son. Father Gonzaga has its doubt that the man is an angle because he doesn’t speak Latin and looks human like. In the story “The house of Asterion” the mysterious character is Asterion because at first we learn that Asterion the son of the queen and then we learned that some people believe that he’s a prisoner but the doors are unlocked. Then learned that he once went to the streets, but people feared him. Finally, we learned at the end that Asterion is a minotaur.

Another gothic element is plot point in this case death/near death. In the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” Pelayo child is very sick before the old man arrives and a day after he arrives the child recovers from his/her illness. The old man can be either be death himself or an actually angel because if he was death by him collapsing outside and not getting to the child, the child was able to recover or he was an angel and by his presence being there helped recover the child. In the story “The house of Asterion” it talks about nine men entering the castle where the minotaur is at so that he may deliver them from evil. They talks about them falling and remaining there basically saying that they died by Asterion.

The other gothic element is setting in the story “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” the setting takes place in a sea coast village where it rains constantly causing damages to Pelayo and Elisenda home. The setting in “The house of Asterion” takes place in Labyrinths in a castle were the minotaur is kept and its described as being unlocked and with no furniture.

Virtual Coffeehouse

I didn’t do much this summer due to the pandemic although I did have plans to go to Miami which ended up getting cancelled. What I ended up doing instead was replaying a bunch of video games for nostalgia. The list of games I replayed were Uncharted 1-4 (PS4), Mario Galaxy (Wii) and Pokemon Colosseum (Gamecube) all of which I recommend with enjoy playing video games.

Out of the three stories that we have read my favorite was “The Black Cat” by Edger Allen Poe because it was the easiest to understand from the three stories. It also gives readers a somewhat of what alcoholism is and the effects that some people get when they are drunk such as the need to feel violent. I also liked the plot twist at the end of the story when he ends up getting caught because of the black cat.
