Week 1: Introduction 

Aug 27- T     Discussion of course, Policies, and texts; Introductions; Home descriptions. Orientation–OpenLab; Q and A; Freewriting; In-Class Reading: Scibona; HW for Sept 3: Read Alexie; Get textbook (2014 edition); then write Journal 1–300 words on which reading you liked the most and why (use journal template).

Week 2: First Person

Sept 3     Due: Journal 1. Freewrite; Essay 1 explained. Discuss readings; Writing concepts (Thesis, sentence, paragraph); HW for Sept 10: read Read/print Malcolm X, Whitehead, and White and write Journal 2: 300 words reflecting on your NYC; prepare for Quiz 1.

Week 3: Home, Intellectual Home, Homesickness

Sept 10    Due: Quiz 1, Due: Journal 2. Freewrite. Discuss home, homesickness, and mapping. Discuss readings and essay format. HW for Sept 17: Readings  Rahmani (Dwell); Keller and Thiong’o (both OpenLab); Draft of Essay 1

Week 4: Essays

Sept 17   Due: Draft of Essay 1. Freewrite and discussion over essay 1; HW: revise and proofread Essay 1; readings TBA

Week 5: Poetry

Sept 24       Due: Final Draft of Essay 1. Introduction to poetry; HW: 350-372 in our textbook; Write Journal 3: 300 words, compare two poems from readings

Week 8:  Writing about Poetry

Oct 15    Journal 3 Due; freewrite; Discuss poetry terms and genres. HW: Study for Quiz 2 on poems and poetry terms 

Week 9:  Writing about Poetry

Oct 22      Due: Quiz 2; Discuss readings and poetry essay. HW: 250 word draft of Poetry Essay. Extra Credit: Fine a sound or film recording of a poem that you like…so we can put the link on our site (10 points)

Week 10: Writing about Poetry

Oct 29     Due: Draft of Essay 2. Freewrite. Peer review of Essay 2.  HW: revise and proofread Essay 2.

Week 11: The Novel

Nov 5       Due: Final Draft of Essay 2. Freewrite and discuss the novel as form. HW: Journal 4

Week 12: Writing about Novels

Nov 12    **library session** Due: Journal 4; Discuss themes and questions. HW: Read to page 65 in The Intuitionist, bring in two questions (in your notebooks)

Week 13: Writing about Novels

Nov 19    Due: Read to page 162. Homework for the 26th: Finish the novel.

Week 14: Writing about Novels
