  1. The author of “New York Day Women” is Edwidge Danticat. I liked this story because it shows how the readers mother overcame and easily adjusted into the new world.

  1. The speaker catches her mother out and about in a place where she never pictured her mother to be. Her mother (according to the speaker) has never left Brooklyn. However, she finds her mother in Manhattan. She stealthily follows her mother around. While she follows her mother, she remembers advice and memories of her mother when she was younger.

  1. The Daughter- Moved to Brooklyn from Haiti with her family when she was a young girl. A decision she makes is to follow her mother to the park where she surprisingly founds out what her mother does on a day to day basis. She also makes the decision to give up her seat for an older woman or pregnant woman.

The Mother- Came to Brooklyn from Haiti with her husband and young daughter. A decision she makes is to take care of the children of others in the day at the park along with other women. In addition, another choice she chooses to make is to take control of her life and get a grip on this new world she’s never experienced.

  1. Mother (Ethics)– In this short story the speaker’s mother exhibits feminist ethics. The reason is because her taking babysitting/taking care of other children is a traditional normative for women. She also shows

Daughter (Ethics)- In “New York Day Women” the daughter (speaker) shows deontology ethics. I say this because in the beginning she said that she usually wouldn’t give up her seat for an elderly but, in the end she remembers her mother’s words and realizes that giving up her seat is the right thing to do.

The short story “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin. I like this story because Ganchin has gone through a lot while living in New York, he even attempted to kill himself but at the end, he ended getting something good from everything that he went through. I also like how this story can show the readers that even though someone might go through a lot, something good could come out of it at the end.

This short story is about a Man named Ganchin who wanted to get money to pay his debt but could because Master Zong fired him and didn’t give him any money. Without money, he couldn’t afford anything so he had to stay at his friend’s house. Days go by and Master Zong tries to take him to the airport to go back to his hometown. He escapes and decides that he doesn’t want to live anymore so he attempts to kill himself but only ended up injuring himself badly. People heard about his attempt suicide and the bad things that Master Zong did to him and received help from his friend and other people.

Ganchin is a monk and a kung fu teacher at Gaolin Temple. He didn’t have money so he decided to stay at Fanku’s house. When Master Zong took Ganchin to the airport, Ganchin decided to run away. He decided that he wanted to commit suicide because of everything that was going on in his life. The Ethics that Ganchin seems to follow are virtues, deontology, and global. Master Zong is in charge of the Gaolin Temple. He was very selfish and only did things for himself. He decided to not give Ganchin the money that he owed him and he kept it for himself. He decided to take Ganchin to the airport because if people found out that Ganchin (a monk) was homeless then it would look bad for his Temple. The Ethics that Master Zong seems to follow is utilitarian. Cindy is a flight attendant and Ganchin’s friend. She gave Ganchin the advice to marry her so that he can stay in New York. She decided to offer Ganchin a place to stay when he lost his job so that he wouldn’t be homeless. The Ethics that Cindy seems to follow are utilitarian and virtue. Fanku is a person that Ganchin met at a celebration. Fanku decided to let Ganchin stay with him when he got fired. Fanku gave Ganchin food and money. Fanku lied to Ganchin about who was going to the house. Fanku got in contact with Master Zong. The Ethics that Fanku seems to follow are utilitarian and deontology.

  1. “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin. I like this story because this story talks about the hardship of life for immigrants in the United States. Immigrants work hard in the U.S. in order to have a better life than before. One of the main points I like about this story is that when Ganchin got into trouble — Master Zong fired him, forced him to go back to China, and paid him nothing, some people helped him and encouraged him (Cindy, Fanku, the restaurant, and the two lawyers). The reader can see friendship through these things.
  2. This short story is talking about a monk — Ganchin who worked in Gaolin temple, teaching Kung fu class. But he was fired by Master Zong who is in charge of the temple. After being fired, he had no money to support himself and did not want to go back without anything. Master Zong kept his passport and forced him back to China. When Master Zong repeatedly refused to pay him, Ganchhin’s illness got worse, and he lost hope for life, he wanted to commit suicide. But this did not happen, and he received help and encouragement from friends and strangers.
  3. & 4. “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin talks about labor rights and living wages. The type of ethics were global. Ganchin (the main character in this short story) was a monk and Kung fu teacher at Gaolin temple, he follows a rule to be good monk and doesn’t want to hurt anyone, live in Fanku’s place, escaping from the airport, and want to commit suicide. Ethics that Ganchin seems to follow were deontology, virtue, and global. Master Zong is in charge of Gaolin temple. He was a selfish man who wanted to be wealthy, so he refused to pay Ganchin (and the monks who used to work in his temple) salary, kept his passport and forced Ganchin to go to the airport to send him home. The Ethics that Master Zong seems to follow were utilitarian. Cindy is a friend of Ganchin, Ganchin was her teacher of martial arts when she was in Tianjin, China. She invited Ganchin to live in her home because she flew abroad a lot, and brought everybody to help Ganchin at the end. Ethics that Cindy seems to follow were virtue and utilitarian. Fanku first met Ganchin at a traditional Chinese New Year party. Fanku helps Ganchin by keeping him in his place, lending him money, and bringing him food every day. Ethics that Fanku seems to follow were deontology and utilitarian.

Short Story: “New York Day Women”

  1. “New York Day Women” is a short story by Edwidge Danticat. I personally liked this wonderful story because it highlights immigrants adjusting to the states. Then there were the flashbacks that came at the right moments, full of wisdom from Suzette’s mother. Lastly, I loved the mother-daughter relationship between the main characters. As a reader, I observed the bond they share that spread throughout the story,  it was genuine.
  2. Summary: The short story “New York Day Women” is about a woman named Suzette, who one day spots her mother in Manhattan, a borough her mother is not familiar with at all. Knowing this, Suzette decides to follow her and notices how her mother is adjusting to this new town nicely. While she follows her mother, Suzette recalls the wisdom her mother would share with her when she was young. Each activity her mother partakes in had triggered flashbacks, which eventually influence Suzette’s state of mind to undergo a change that made her a better person just as her mother.
  3. Main Characters
  • Suzette

-A young eccentric woman who has much love and respect for her mother, and looks to her for guidance.

Decision

  • Suzette decides to follow her mother secretly to observe her

Change

  • After observing her mother, Suzette decides to give her seat to an old lady (as old as her mother), or a pregnant lady on a train. This is important because, in the beginning she was quite picky on whom she will give her seat on the train. For Suzette, it depends on certain factors before she would give up her seat.

Suzette’s types of Ethics are of a utilitarian in the beginning, due to her thought process. By the end, her ethics are of virtue by following her mother’s example.

  • Suzette’s Mother

– Suzette’s mother is a wise, woman (possibly in her fifties or sixties), who uses her past and roots to adjust to her new life in the Big Apple.

Decisions

  • Suzette’s mother decides to get out of her comfort zone, and begins to adapt to living in the new area using her experiences from Haiti.
  • Suzette’s mother chooses not be a part of Suzette’s school PTA meetings, because she didn’t want Suzette to be ashamed of her or as she put it “day woman.”

Unlike Suzette who ethics shifted, her mother’s type of ethics is of virtue and global. This is displayed from beginning to end, and it ultimately rubs on Suzette, hence the shift of ethics for her.

My favorite reading in the five is the “New York Day Women” wrote by Edwidge Danticatthe reason is simpleit remind meI might not know everything about the person who I love and the person around mealways to being stereotype to them just by their lookingway to speakaction, never truly to understand them. “A Good Fall”
The short story that I have chosen to write about is “A Good Fall” by Ha Jin. I really like this story because of how well written it was. The characters, the themes, and just how it makes you feel as a reader. When you continued to read the story, you were interested every step of the way. When it comes to me, I lose interest really quickly, but with this story I actually was able to finish it without getting bored. This story was about a monk who worked at Gaolin Temple and was fired by Master Zong who was in charge of the temple he worked at. He had no money to provide for himself and didn’t want to go back home knowing he had nothing. Master Zong kept his passport because he wanted to send Ganchin back on his terms so that it didn’t look bad on him or the temple. Eventually Ganchin attempted suicide but it didn’t go as planned when his martial arts instincts kicked in and saved his life. After, he was helped on how to fix and better the situation he was in. Ganchin was one of the main characters, he was a monk/kung fu teacher at the temple. Choices he’s made were moving in with Fanku instead of staying at Cindy’s, escaping the airport, and attempting suicide. Throughout the story, the ethical choices made by Ganchin were deontology, virtue, and global. Another main character was Master Zong, the head of the temple. Choice he made was firing Ganchin, keeping his passport from him, not paying him what he owed Ganchin, and kidnapping him. Throughout the story, the ethical choices made by Master Zong were utilitarian. Another main character was Fanku, they met at a festival once and when Ganchin asked to stay with him, he welcomed him. Choices he’s made were taking Ganchin in, providing for him, and ended up having to stop paying for him due to his own money problems, and told Master Zong his whereabouts. Throughout the story, the ethical choices made were deontology and utilitarian. Last but not least another main character was Cindy. Who was friends with Ganchin, he once was her teacher. Choices she’s made was by opening up her home to Ganchin, paying for him when they met up, and being there for him overall. Throughout the story, her ethical choices were virtue, utilitarian, and global.
