The schedule for this course consists of three parts with the goals of providing students with an overview of the U.S. health care system (Part A), exposure to different health care disciplines (Part B), and discussion of non-clinical careers in health care as well as current policies and initiatives (Part C).   

 


PART A      INTRODUCTION TO THE US HEALTH CARE SYSTEM
Week 1       Intro to the past & current state of the US health care system
Week 2       Health disparities, community health, & health education
Week 3       Organization and structure of health care; Aging and health

PART B      CLINICAL VISITATIONS ACROSS THE CITY TECH HEALTH DISCIPLINES
Week 4       Overview of field and virtual tour #1
Week 5       Overview of field and virtual tour #2 
Week 6       Overview of field and virtual tour #3
Week 7       Overview of field and virtual tour #4 
Week 8       Overview of field and virtual tour #5

Virtual site visits will consist of Dental Hygiene, Restorative Dentistry, Nursing, Radiologic Technology, and Vision Care. Students need to write only two personal reflections regarding the site visits.

Week 9       Career planning & professionalism in health care
Week 10     No Synchronous Session. Students work on midterm papers.

PART C      HEALTH CARE ISSUES AND NON-CLINICAL CAREERS
Week 11     Mental health & social services professions 
Week 12     Health services administration; Payers of health care
Week 13     Technology and healthcare; Social marketing in healthcare
                  Due May 3rd:  Two reflective summaries
Week 14     Current health care policies & priorities
Week 15     Due May 17th: Online Final exam
