Case Studies

1) Helen, an experienced scuba diver, is at the bottom of the Caribbean ocean floor exploring a sunken ship thought to be over 300 years old. She spots something gleaming in a back corner of the ship under a pile of rubble. She approaches to get a closer look only to find the source of the gleam to be a piece of a broken mirror set on a plank of wood. She kicks the plank of wood, causing the deflection of a big pile of which underneath she discovers a chest filled with hundreds of diamonds. Excited to inform her team of the news she jolts up to sea level. What condition is Helen at risk for? What did she do that could cause this condition?

2) A 35 year old man presents to the Emergency Room with acute onset severe left flank pain which radiates to the groin. You suspect kidney stones and order imaging. The kidneys lie in which body cavity? Explain anatomically, why the pain would radiate to the inguinal region?

3) A 38 year old woman is in your clinic because she felt some “bumps” in her underarm area while showering. On examination it is confirmed that they are swollen lymph nodes, which you now have to document in the patients file. Which body landmark would you use to describe the location of the lymphadenopathy?

4) The work day is ending and Jeremy, a radiology technician, just finished his last patients’ CAT scan. He is eager to leave as a student shadowing in the hospital approaches him. She looks at the CT scan and asks, “how do I even know what I’m looking at here?” How should Jeremy explain the view of the image, in terms of planes/sections?

5) A patient is in the Operating Room about to undergo an elective procedure to remove a lipoma on the outer aspect of his right scapula. The nurse performs a pre-procedural Time-out which is a deliberate pause in all employee activity to verbally confirm that the correct patient is undergoing the correct procedure on the correct anatomical site. He says the patient’s name. How should he describe the location of the lipoma if he is to use the appropriate anatomical body orientation and direction terms?

6) Brandon is playing soccer and as in an attempt to get the ball from his opponent, their legs get entangled and Brandon suddenly hears a loud pop! He falls to the ground in agony and is subsequently taken to the hospital. What would be the best type of imaging to order at this time?

7) Linda wants to view a wet mount of her cheek cells in lab. She goes to the closet to get one of the compound microscopes. She puts one hand on the body of the microscope and the other hand on the nosepiece. She places the microscope gently on the desk and begins using the oil immersion lens. Since it is the first lens she is focusing under, she uses the coarse adjustment knob only. Did Linda handle/use the microscope appropriately? If not, what did she do wrong?

8) Abraham is a novice tap dancer.  He is enrolled in a dancing class and has been working very hard in anticipation of the upcoming recital.  While practicing his tap dancing moves at home, without the supervision of his dance instructor, he trips over his own feet.  In an attempt to break his fall, he extends his right arm, falling onto his outstretched hand.  A shock of pain in his right wrist immediately follows.  He looks at his wrist and sees swelling and deformity characterized by the posterior displacement of his hand and wrist.  What is this fracture called, and which bone is involved?
