Edward P. Jones âThe First Dayâ follows the story of a little girl beginning her first day of school at the age of five years old. Throughout this piece several details are provided that I found to be unnecessary. While reading this I found myself wondering âwhat is the point of this?â I kept waiting for something big or important to happen but it never did, which was disappointing. At the very end of this reading when the little girl recalls her mother telling her to listen to the teacher and not go anywhere I felt there was something the mother was hiding. One quote specifically stood out to me which is when the author stated â And even when the teacher turns me toward the classroom and I hear what must be the singing and talking of all the children in the world, I can still hear my motherâs footsteps above it all.â After reading that sentence I got the feeling the mother wouldnât be coming back, especially because she had brought so much paperwork to enroll her daughter in school. I thought it was interesting the way the author worded this sentence because it was almost as if I could hear the motherâs footsteps walking away. Overall, I struggled understanding the purpose of this text and wish I knew why this day was so significant for the little girl. I also wish I had an answer as to why the mother wanted her daughter to go to one specific school so badly.

Office Hours: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM. Iâll be available through Zoom and will send an invitation via email that you should keep all semester. Try to join my meeting at the start of the hour, not at the endâsince I may be talking to other students or have another appointment after the hour is up. If those times donât work with your schedule, we can schedule a different time. This means youâll have to schedule an appointment in advance. I suggest you have multiple times in mind, since your schedule may not mesh with mine!

I agree, it did seem like the mother was hiding something. She brought a ton of paperwork, some that were probably not necessary and she was acting unlike herself while leaving her daughter at school.
I agree that the story wasn’t as clear in the beginning since she wasn’t describing where they were heading towards. She just talked about passing through some streets. But that quote did stand out to me as well since it was very descriptive.
